VIETNAM WIND POWER

May 2012

Looking for a market with rapid growth and political will to

increase the supply of wind power? Consider Vietnam!
Why Vietnam?
Vietnam has a significant potential for wind power with average wind speeds of more than
6m/s, surpassing the potential of all neighbouring Southeast Asian countries. While the
electricity demand is expected to increase 7 times to 800 billion Kwh in 2030, Vietnam will, in
order to meet this demand, have to invest in renewable energy, including wind power.
Investments are vital considering the fact that Vietnam is expected to start importing coal, one
of their primary resources for producing electricity, by 2015.

Status of the Vietnamese power demand and potential of wind power:

According to the national plan, the electricity demand in Vietnam is forecasted to

increase by up to 14.2 pct. annually for the period 2011-2015 and 11.4 pct. for the
period 2016-2020.

The National Energy Development Strategy (2011-2020), Vision 2030 sets the
renewable energy target rate at 5.6 pct. of total primary energy consumption by 2020
and 9.4 pct. by 2030. The governments target is to increase the wind power to 1,000
MW (0.7 pct. of electricity production) by 2020 and 6,200 MW (2.4 pct.) by 2030. A
new feed-in tariff for wind power has been regarded as an improvement to the
renewable energy market.

By June 2011, only a 30 MW Wind Farm has been put into operation. It is planned
that four more wind farms will be put into operation by end of 2012 and 50 other
projects in the pipeline. The total estimated investment needed for wind power by
2025 is 1,125 million US dollars.

Vietnam is located in the monsoon wind zone with two main wind directions, i.e. the
cold east-north monsoon wind from Siberia and China during winter and the hot
south-west monsoons from equator during summer. With more than 3,000 km of
coastline and plenty islands, the total potential of wind energy in Vietnam is estimated
to be as high as 713,000 MW 510,000 MW on land and 203,000 MW on islands. In
comparison this is 200 times more than the largest hydropower plant, Son La, in
Southeast Asia produces.

What are the Danish capacities within wind power?
Denmark was the first mover in the wind power industry and has for decades been holding the
status as the global hub for wind power innovation and development. Wind industry companies
from all over the world have located central parts of their R&D operations in Denmark, and the
concentration of companies covering the entire wind power value chain is unparalleled
elsewhere in the world.

Making use of Danish state-of-the-art technology

The Danish wind power industry has more than 30 years of experience and has now
grown into key contributor to the general Danish economy. In fact, the wind
technology industry accounts for 8.5 pct. of Denmarks total exports.

Denmark holds a highly qualified and experienced talent pool with more than 350
companies and 25,000 people employed in the wind power industry.
These
companies can deliver end-to-end solutions all the way from research and
development through production and assembly to operations and maintenance.

The industry specializes in both on-shore and off-shore projects and have extensive
experienced in handling everything from small-scale projects to wide-ranging wind
mill parks.

One in every three wind turbines and nine out of ten offshore turbines in operation
worldwide are based on Danish technology or know-how.

What are the competencies the Embassy of Denmark can provide?

For the past 40 years, the Embassy has established a long lasting cooperation and friendship
based on mutual trust and understanding with the government of Vietnam, both at the central
and local levels. The Embassy possesses good knowledge and experience of business
opportunities and how to do business in Vietnam. We have insights of the political, socioeconomic, legal and cultural systems of the country.
The Embassy is the reliable resource for information and knowledge on the Danish wind power
industry, its manufacturers and companies, its products, know-how, technologies and
solutions.
Regardless the need of your organization, the Embassy of Denmark is a good place to start
your Vietnamese endeavours. We can offers customized services of high quality with full
confidentiality to both private and public institutions.
