Boogalooorbugal(also:shingaling,Latin
boogaloo,LatinR&B)isagenreofLatinmusicand
dancethatwaspopularintheUnitedStatesinthe1960s.
AlthoughitcametoprominenceaftertheriseofBossa
novaandwasgreatlyinfluencedbythenewdrumbeatof
modernsamba,arguablyoneofthemostremarkable
influencesinpopularmusic,fromthesecondhalfofthe
1950s,boogaloooriginatedinNewYorkCityamong
teenageCubans,PuertoRicans,andothers.Thestylewas
afusionofpopularAfricanAmericanR&Bandsoul,
withmamboandsonmontuno,boogalooemployed
EnglishaswellasSpanishlyrics,andenteredthe
AmericanmainstreamprimarilythroughtheAmerican
Bandstandtelevisionprogram.Boogaloodanceis
distinctfromtheElectricboogaloo,astyleofdance
whichdevelopeddecadeslaterundertheinfluenceof
funkandhiphopdance.

Inthe1950sand'60s,AfricanAmericansintheUnitedStateslistenedtovariousstylesofmusic,including
jumpblues,R&Banddoowop.PuertoRicansinNewYorkCitysharedthesetastes,buttheyalsolistened
togenreslikemamboorchachachandBossaNova.TherewasamixingofPuertoRicans,Cubans,African
Americansandothersinclubs,whosebandstriedtofindcommonmusicalground.Boogaloowasaresult
ofthissearch,amarriageofmanystylesincludingCubansonmontuno,guaguanc,guajira,guaracha,
mambo,andAmericanR&Bandsoul.
Boogaloocanbeseenas"thefirstNuyoricanmusic"(RenLpez),andhasbeencalled"thegreatest
potentialthatCubanrhythmshadtoreallycrossoverintermsofmusic"(IzzySanabria).Styleslikedoo

Thoughboogaloodidnotbecomemainstreamnationwideuntillaterinthedecade,twoearlyTop20hits
camein1963:MongoSantamara'sperformanceoftheHerbieHancockpieceWatermelonManandRay
Barretto'sElWatusi.Inspiredbythesetwosuccesses,anumberofbandsbeganimitatingtheirinfectious
rhythms(whichwereLatinizedR&B),intensecongarhythmsandclevernoveltylyrics.Boogaloowasthe
onlyCubanstylerhythmwhichacquiredEnglishlyricssomeofthetime.EstablishedCubaninfluenced
orchestrasalsorecordedtheoccasionalboogaloo,includingPrezPrado,TitoRodrguezandTitoPuente.
MostoftheothergroupswereyoungmusicianssomewereteenagerstheLatinSouls,theLatTeens,
Pucho&HisLatinSoulBrothers,JoeBataanandtheLatinaires.
Useofthetermboogalooinreferringtoamusicalstylewasprobablycoinedinabout1966byRichieRay
andBobbyCruz.Thebiggestboogaloohitofthe'60swas"BangBang"bytheJoeCubaSextet,whichsold
overonemillioncopiesin1966.ElPitowasanotherhitbythispopularcombo.Hitsbyothergroups
includedJohnnyColn's"BoogalooBlues",PeteRodrguez's"ILikeItlikeThat",andHctorRivera's"At
theParty".
ThesameyearasJoeCuba'spopsuccess,1966,sawtheclosingofNewYorkCity'sPalladiumBallroom,
whenthevenue,thehomeofbigbandmamboforyears,lostitsliquorlicense.[1]Theclosingmarkedthe
endofmainstreammambo,andboogalooruledtheLatinchartsforseveralyearsbeforesalsabegantotake
over.Atthesametimeseveralotherrhythmicalinventionsweregoingtherounds:thedengue,thejalajala
andtheshingalingwerealloffshootsofthemamboandchachach.[1]
TheoldergenerationofLatinmusicianshavebeenaccusedofusingtheirinfluencetorepresstheyoung
movement,forcommercialreasons.Therewascertainlypressureonbookingagentsbytheestablished
bands.[2]Thecrazewasmostlyoverby1970,perhapsbecauseofthehostilityofestablishedbandsandkey
bookingagentsthereasonisuncertain.AlmosteverymajorandminorLatindanceartistofthetimehad
recordedatleastafewboogaloosontheiralbums.Ithadbeenanintense,ifbrief,musicalmovement,and
themusicisstillhighlyregardedtoday.[2]
TheLatinboogaloobandsweremostlyledbyyoung,sometimeseventeenagemusiciansfromNewYork's
PuertoRicancommunity.Theseincluded,butwerentlimitedto,Bataan,Cuba,BobbyValentn,TheLatin
Souls,TheLatTeens,JohnnyColn,WillieColnandTheLatinaires.Assuch,Latinboogaloocanbeseen
as"thefirstNuyoricanmusic"(RenLpez),andhasbeencalled"thegreatestpotentialthat(Latinos)had
toreallycrossoverintermsofmusic"(IzzySanabria).However,Latinomusiciansandcomposersalso
madeabigcontributiontodoowop.
LatinboogalooalsospreadthroughoutthewiderLatinmusicworld,especiallyinPuertoRico,wheretop
bandElGranComboreleasedmanyboogaloos.LatinmusicscenesinPeru,Colombia,Panamaand
elsewherealsoembracedtheboogaloo.Thoughthedancecrazeonlylasteduntil1968/69,Latinboogaloo
waspopularenoughthatalmosteverymajorandminorLatindanceartistofthetimerecordedatleastafew
boogaloosontheiralbums.Thatincludedboogaloosbylongtimeveteran,mamboeramusicianssuchas
EddiePalmieriandhisAyeQueRicoorTitoPuente'sHittheBongo.
Theboogaloofadedfrompopularitybytheendof1969.[2]p168Whatcausedthefairlyrapidendofthe
boogaloo'sreignisindoubt.Accordingtoseveralsources,jealousolderLatinmusicartistscolludedwith
recordlabels(inparticular,Fania),radioDJs,anddancehallpromoterstoblacklistboogaloobandsfrom

sawformergiantslikePuenteandthePalmieriBrothersreturntothetop,whilemostLatinboogaloobands
wentoutofbusiness(JoeBataanandWillieColnbeingtwonotableexceptions).[3]
LatinboogalooremainspopulartothisdayinCali,Colombia,wherethegenreisplayedextensively,along
withsalsaandpachanga,invariousFMandAMradiostationsandhundredsofdanceclubs.TheCaleos
prefertheirboogaloospedup,from33to45RPM,tomatchthecity'sfastdancestyle.However,theterm
`BoogaloowasusedasthenamefortheKentHarriscomboonthe1955Crest78rpmissue,asby
"BoogalooAndHisGaliantCrew"onthetitles"CopsAndRobbersand"ClothesLine".
