NGN OVERVIEW

Shubha N Bhambhani
DDG (TEC)

PRESENT TELECOM TRENDS

Fixed line usage is reducing dramatically for classical services
Mobile use is increasing steadily even though penetration is already high.
Broadband Internet deployment shows a rapid growth trend.
As per available data, IP traffic increases many fold every year , while
voice traffic is relatively flat.

BSNL SCENARIO (Contd.)

BSNL grew 11 % against 38% growth of market

Legacy network contributing to high OPEX
Customer Churn
From landline to mobile
Inherent TDM Limitation
Delay in the roll out of service
Vanilla offerings. No seamless experience
BB penetration still Low
PC penetration + lack of content
No leverage on TV base
Separate networks for PSTN, Wireless and Data
Huge growth of Wireless deployment
Complex network design to support
Bandwidth hungry applications
Telecom service penetration is high in urban areas and low in rural areas.
Huge investments required to set-up access infrastructure.

Separate Access Transport & Switching Networks

4/7/2012

PROBLEMS OF EXISTING NETWORK

Slow for development of new features and capabilities
Expensive upgrades and operating expenses
Proprietary vendors
Large space, power and cooling requirements
Limited migration strategy to New technology
Product / model obsolescence
Non availability of maintenance spares
Unable to meet the demand for services like PRBT, parallel ringing,
Centrex, multi party conferencing in Fixed Network
No provision of value added services like VOIP, Net Meeting, IM (Instant
Messaging), Web conferencing, On line data sharing, etc.

4/7/2012

PRESENT TRENDS IN FIXED NETWORK

Fixed Network showing almost NO GROWTH

Overall Loading of Fixed Network is REDUCING at a VERY ALARMING
RATE (0.8% to 1.1 % per month)
Tariffs/ARPU Continuously on DECLINE.
ARPU has REDUCED to approx INR 275 per month

OPERATORS REQUIREMENT
More and more customers to increase their revenue
Fast deployment of new services for more revenue
Fast Scalability of Network
Reduced cost of the Network & Infrastructure (CAPEX)
Reduced cost of O&M (OPEX) by way of centralization of O & M efforts
Retention of Customers by offering new value added service
Generation of new revenue streams for improved ARPU
Adoption of converged networks and services in line with global trends
4/7/2012

CUSTOMERs REQUIREMENTS
New services at less cost
Value for his money
Bundled services from one operator
Personlisation of the services
Freedom / Mobility
Simplicity

4/7/2012

VENDORS REQUIREMENTS

More customers (operators) to increase their revenue

Reduced cost of the network

NEXT GENERATION NETWORKS

The NGN aims to build up an integrated network,
through which any customer can access
Any service
at Any place
through Any device
at Any time.

4/7/2012

14

NEXT GENERATION NETWORK SIMPLIFIED MODEL

Device agnostic

4/7/2012

Access &
Location agnostic

Service agnostic

Layered implementation to provide flexibility

15

NEXT GENERATION NETWORK SIMPLIFIED MODEL

With such an agnostic network, different services like Land

Line, Mobile, Broadband will complement each other rather
then acting as a substitute to each other (Unfortunately the
trend today)
Next Generation Networks represent an opportunity to
reduce capital expenditure by being able to offer all services
over a single integrated IP based infrastructure.

CHANGING SERVICES SCENARIO

NGN provides an opportunity to deploy single integrated

network for provisioning of voice, video and data or what is
called Multimedia services

4/7/2012

18

ADVANTAGES OF NGN TO OPERATORS

4/7/2012

Only one infrastructure (IP) required

One backbone for voice and data services instead of two parallel ones
No maintenance of proprietary switching systems
The new IP based network brings down the capital and operational
expenditures considerably
The CAPEX reduction emerges from centralization of resources
Savings in OPEX comes from a near ten fold reduction in power, space
and human resource requirements
Easier configuration of equipment
Fast deployment of advanced and new services

19

ADVANTAGES OF NGN TO SUBSCRIBERS

Reduced call charges
New innovative services
Single connection and bill for voice, data, video, mobile (Quad play)
Better QoS
Faster speed
Availability of BW on Demand

4/7/2012

20

ADVANTAGES OF NGN OVER FIXED NETWORK

Lower costs per call, especially for long-distance calls
More calls with less bandwidth
Better enhanced services such as teleconferencing, stereo hi-fi and
video.
Involves more of software, simplifying hardware infrastructure and
changing upgrade economics
Consolidation of Data and Voice-Converged Services, Networks
Cheaper to Operate and Manage
Simplicity to introduce new services

21

NGN MIGRATION OBSTACLES

How to get there?

Multiple architectural models

Immature and evolving standards
Concerns about reliability
Concerns about vendor staying power
How to minimize capex, maximize returns

4/7/2012

22

Probable Approaches

Introduce new services on NGN platforms

Introduce new services by investing in those solutions that can migrate

to NGN environment

Introduce new services by converting the hardware of TDM to Gateways

and/or soft switches

NGN TRAI View

Carriers moving to a Converged' IP network need not stretch
themselves financially
Reduced OPEX and CAPEX, along with greater revenue
possibilities, can make migration a self-financing process

4/7/2012

24

NGN DEFINATION

A
packet-based
network
able
to
provide
telecommunication services and able to make use of
multiple broadband, QoS-enabled transport technologies
and in which service-related functions are independent
from underlying transport-related technologies
A Multi-Service Network able to support Voice, Data and
Video.

4/7/2012

25

What is VoIP ?
IP used to deliver digitized voice(or similar time critical
interactive services) over a managed/unmanaged
network. (Local Area Network, Wide Area Network,
Internet)

Internet Telephony
Time critical voice over unmanaged public internet
PC to PC using Skype or Gtalk

DEMYSTIFYING FACTS ABOUT NGN

MYTHS

FACTS

Anything which is IP /
Ethernet is NGN

While IP / Ethernet is definitely an

integral component of migration
towards NGN, NGN is much
broader and wider in scope

NGN is long term

The foundation of different building

blocks of NGN has to be laid on
immediate, medium and long term
basis
