Studiesoftheinfluenceofchangesinrelativesealevelandrateofsedimentsupply,
whichmakethebasisforsequencestratigraphy,havesofarbeenmostsuccessfully
appliedtotransitionalandshallowmarineenvironments.Insuchenvironments,there
arealsopotentiallinksbetweensequencestratigraphyandthemineralogicaland
geochemicalmodifications,whichhenceallowaconsiderablyimproveabilityto
predictthereservoirqualityofthesesedimentpackages.Conversely,bothsequence
stratigraphyanditsrelationshiptothemineralogical,geochemicalcompositionand
reservoirqualityofdeepseasedimentsarestillpoorlyconstrainedintheliterature.The
fundamentalhypothesisthatwethusseektotestisthatchangesintherelativesealevel
areprobablyaccompaniedbypredictablechangesintheprimarysandcompositionand
textureaswellasthediageneticmodificationsofdeepmarineclasticsequencesin
passivecontinentalmargins.Thepresentproposalbringstogetheralargespectrumof
approachestodevelopourunderstandingofthegeometryandthepredictionof
reservoirqualityinthistectonicsetting.Adetailedassessmentofthemineralcontent
andtextureofthesereservoirsis,forthefirsttime,tentativelyintegratedwithfacies
analysisinasequencestratigraphycontext,exploringtheinterestofbulkrock
geochemistryinscalingupwardsthemineralogicalinformation.Theexpected
achievementisaconceptualmodelpredictingprimarysandcompositionand,when
combinedwithmodelingofthethermalhistoryandthefluidinducedchangesin
mineralogyandporositypermeability,anintegratedtoolfortheevaluationofreservoir
qualityindeepmarineclasticdeposits.Thesequencesselectedtotestourbasic
hypothesisandthecomplementaritiesoftheproposedapproachesaretakenfrom
offshoreNewJerseyaswellasfromthe4Faeroe/ShetlandandtheVringBasin,atthe
BritishandtheMidNorwegiancontinentalshelves,respectively.

Inthepastdecade,deepwatermarine
sandstoneshavebecomeincreasinglythe
focusofhydrocarbonreservoirtargets.Thus,
whiletheexplorationandproductionactivities
declineintheNorthSea,theAtlanticmargin,
westoftheBritishIslesandNorwayhasbecomethesiteofintenseexploration
activity.ThetargetsforthisstudyareFaeroe/ShetlandandtheVringBasin,atthe
BritishandtheMidNorwegiancontinentalshelves,respectively.Thediagenetic
evolutionanditsimpactonreservoirqualityevolutionofsandstonesisoneofthe
criticalaspectsinunderstandingthebasicelementsoftheplayinthesesettings.
Unravelingthediageneticevolutionofsandstonesequencesusingintegrated
petrologic,geochemical,sedimentologicalandsequencestratigraphicapproach
providesafirmbasisforbetterunderstandingandpredictionoftheoriginand
distributionoftemporalandspatialreservoirproperties.Thediageneticevolution
pathwaysofsandstonesaregovernedbyseveralinterrelatedparameters,including
compositionofframeworkgrains,organicmattercontent,chemistryofdepositional
waters(marine,meteoricorbrackish)aswellastheextentandtypeofgeochemical
modificationsinducedtothemduetosedimentwaterinteractions,tectonicsetting,and
burialthermalhistoryofthebasin.Furthermore,changesintherelativesealevel,
whichoccursduetoeustaticsealevelchangesand/orthetectonicuplift/subsidence
controlimportantaspectsofsedimentdiagenesissuchas:(1)porewatercomposition,
(2)detritalcompositionandsorting,and(3)sedimentationrates,whichcontrolthe
durationofsedimentresidenceatnearseafloorconditions.
