1 . Introduction
Structure description :
The structure is an architectural fin of total height of about 12.5 m fixed to a multi-storeyed building
top of height of about 146 m from ground, on its sides.
The fin is fixed on to the curtain wall support structure ( by others) with means of MS bolts.

R2

The support structure height has been reduced as per site requirements.
The fin is made of box section RHS200x100x6 welded structure with 8 thk plates horiz.supports .

The cladding sheet is fixed on to this fin.

The fin is of 200 mm width ,
Such 6 units will be fixed to the curtain wall support structure.
The purpose of following calculations is as listed below;
(A) To check the proposed steel structure of the fin .
(B) To check the structural stability of the fin structure for all incident loads on it.
with respect to deflections.
(C) To check & design proposed economical and most practical member sizes of the
fin structure.
(D) To check proposed anchoring arrangement for fin fixing to the curtain wall support structure.
Calculations are fully revised as per the new requirement where the support structure height has
been reduced as per Drg # New-LME-SN-E-1002-FINS-Rev 1-4.9.08.

6) Allowable deflections : H / 180 Applicable as for decorative fin.
Design codes::
Design of fin steel structure has been done

conforming to following codes of practice.

* BS 5950 - Part 1:2000 -Structural use of steelwork in building.

* BS 8110 -1:1997 ,BS 8110-3:1985 -Structural use of concrete
* BS 6399-2:1997 for Wind Loading
Design Philosophy

Analysis and Design of the fin structure has been done using Staad Pro 2004 Analysis and design software.
The structure is designed for self wt, dead loads, wind loads and their combinations.
The steel sections have been designed using Staad 2004 software.
For Staad design of steel members British Code BS5950 has been used.
The chemical anchor bolts are designed for the design reactions obtained from Staad analysis output.

The fin structure is modelled as space frame.

Input file " fins.Rev-2-5.9.08.std "

R2

The structure is modelled as Space frame ,

The supports are considered as pinned supports except one which is resting on the curtainwall support parapet .
The fin is fixed to the curtain wall support structure, at the locations as shown on the Staad model

Loads :
1) Dead load ( DL)
self weight of supporting structure is calculated by STAAD programme.
cladding wt is nominal . Consider 10% of self wt to account for cladding.
self weight command in Staad is given accordingly.
2 ) Wind load (WL)
As effective height at which wind load is acting is > 100 m , directional method of BS6399
is used to calculate accurate wind load on the fin.
Basic wind speed Vb = 26 m/s
Site wind speed Vs = Sa.Sb.Ss.Sd.Vb
= 1x1x1x1x26

cl. 2.2.2.1 of BS6399-2:1997

all factors considered 1.0 to be conservative

= 26 m/s
dynamic pressure q = 0.613 x Ve2

Ve = effective wind speed

= Vb.Sb

for site in town terrain , ( cl.3.2.3.2.3 )

Sb = Sc.Tc.{ 1+(gt.St.Tt) + Sh }
Considering effective height as 180 m from ground and upwind distance from edge of town to site
as 3 km & upwind distance from sea to site as 10 km, the factors in above equation are as below;
Sc : fetch factor

1.67 .. from table 22

St : turbulence factor

by interpolation

Tc ; fetch adjustment factor

0.95 .. from table 23

by interpolation

Tt : turbulence adjustment factor

1.08 .. from table 23

by interpolation

gt : gust peak factor

3.44 .. from table 24

As per ATKIN specs.

Sh : topographic increment

0 .. from cl. 3.2.3.4.1

Sb = 1.67 x 0.954 { 1 +(3.44 x 0.0884 x 1.08) + 0}

for all RHS 200x 100 x 6 members of support structure , WL-z

= 1.2 x 1.84 x 0.2 = 0.44 kN/m

for 8 thk plate supports .WL-z = 1.2 x 1.84 x 0.272 = 0.6 kN/m

R2

( Applied as UDL command in Staad.)

for all members of support structure , WL-x = 1.2 x 1.84 x 0.1 = 0.22 kN/m , Applied as UDL load

1.0 DL+0.8 WL-x

1.0 DL+0.8 WL-z

1.0 DL+0.8 WL+x

As per table 37 of BS5950-2000, design strength of weld

pw = 0.5 Ue

where Ue = tensile strength of electrode = 440 N/mm2 for min grade of class 35 electrode.

pw = 220 N/mm2
From above table it is evident that resultant stress in weld is < allowable stress.Hence safe

hence safe

max shear in plate =
