OBJECTIVES
General
Read the Chapter 3 of the book Engineering Design Methods of Nigel Cross,
and elaborate a summary before due date.

Specific
Elaborate charts that refer to the different types of design process, and make
observations about each type of process

DESIGN PROCESS
Based on the reading, we can
identify 7 different types of design
process
Four Stage Model
Frenchs Model
Jones
Analysis-SynthesisEvaluation
Archers Prescriptive Model
Pahl and Beitzs model
VDI 2221
Marchs Model
All of them have been elaborated
by different researches and with
different experiences.
In this paper, I will summarize the
main ideas of each design process

and give some personal insights of

each.
Four Stage Model
This first model is the one that was
described at the beginning of the
book; it is a simple way to organize
the actions that a designer must
follow to obtain a design.

Frenchs Model
This model is significantly more
detailed; the circles represent
stages reached while the rectangles
represent activities.

Ing. Ena Chacn Castillo

Jones Analysis-SynthesisEvaluation
This one of the prescriptive model,
these types of process find the
need for more analytical work to
ensure the generation of solution
concepts.

JonesDesign Process

This process is usually used in

typical activities of conventional
engineering design, and it is seen in
normal evolutions of projects and
designs

Even though this might look really

similar to a conventional design
process,
it
emphases
on
performance specifications logically
derived from the design problem.

Prescriptive

Pahl and Beitzs model

Model
This is a more detailed prescriptive
model; this includes interactions
with the world outside of the
design process itself, such as
inputs, outputs and many feedback
loops.

Archer summarized this process as

dividing into three broad phases:
analytical, creative and executive.
For him the design process was a
creative sandwich where the bread
of objective and systematic analysis
may be thick or thin, but the
creative is always there in the
middle

This kind of model is much more

complex, but they are often
criticized because they tend to
obscure the general structure of
the design process by swamping in
the fine detail of the numerous
tasks and activities that are
necessary in all practical design
work. In the specifics of Pahl and
Beitz, it stills retains some clarity.

VDI 2221

(Model Systematic Approach

to the Design of Technical Systems and

Products)

This model was elaborated by a

German professional engineers
society, the Verein Deutscher
Ingineiure.

Ing. Ena Chacn Castillo

Marchs Model
It is considered a more radical
model of the design process, it
recognizes the solution-focused
nature of design thinking.

The activity that is most

particularly associated with design
is that of synthesis,

This model gives several guidelines

to be followed, and suggests a
systematic approach in which, they
consider, the design process, as
part of product creation, is
subdivided into general working
stages, making the design approach
transparent,
rational
and
independent of a specific branch of
industry.

CONCLUSION
Original:
This lecture and this assignment, has shown me how diverse is the structure
of ideas in the human mind. All the authors that elaborated any of the design
process explained above where looking for the same goal, but their inner
knowledge and their personal thoughts made them take different paths to
achieve it.
From the design processes presented, I have to admit that I love the ones
that are long and fully detailed, but as I explained above, they can limit the
vision of the designer with all the little tasks that have to be done. The next
time that I have the chance to work on a design I would probably mix two of
the processes, for me the core will be the Frenchs Model but taking some
extra directions and recommendations from the one of Pahl and Beitz.
