Heat loss in cooling water

Objecive :
to calculate the dispersed heat.
Apparatus :
Four cylinders, MITSUBISHI COLT 13 gasoline engine
during combustion in the engine temperature in the cylinder rises
up to 4000 F. large amount of this heat is absorbed by the cylinder
walls , cylinder head , pistons and valves due to which there is
great rise in their temperature , if this absorbed heat is not
dissipated , the combustion chamber surfaces would become red
hot the valves would burn and warp and the various parts of the
engine would expand enormously , resulting in the seizure of
pistons in the
cylinders
bearing on the fourna1s and pins and scoring of cylinder walls . in
an ICE about 20b of the latent heat produced during combustion
passes through this cylinder walls into the cooling system. the
cooling System is required to absorb and dissipate the excess heat
conducted on cylinder walls, cylinder head, pistons and
valves....etc. and thus to keep engine temperatures within the safe
limits.

Measuring test data:

With the unit set to run at rating measure the time interval Tcool
required for a given water flow Vcool, as for example 5 or 10 liters
to pass into the engine cooling system. Water flow shall be
checked on the cooling water installed in the delivery line of
cooling water system, It will also be necessary to check the cooling
water temp. At engine inlet and outlet.

PROCEDURE:
1-Set the stop watch going immediately after the cooling water
meter has reached the chosen reference indication.
2.Read cooling water temperature at engine inlet thermometer T1
3. Read cooling water temperature at engine outlet thermometer T2
4. Stop the watch as soon as the cooling water meter indicates that
the present amount of water has passed through it.5.
Enter the time interval Tcool indicated by the stop watch as will as
the cooling water temperatures read on thermometers T1 & T2 in
the table together wit lithe rest speed in (rpm).
6. Repeat the above operations at the other test ratings.
Working out test data:
Enter in the table the following values:
Test speed. n ( rpm )
Cooling water volume Vr in liters as preset for the test
Time, t (sec) required for using up the cooling water volume
Vr
Cooling water temperature at engine inlet thermometer T1
Cooling water temperature at engine outlet thermometer T2
a) Calculate cooling water mass flow in kg/hr for each rating
as follows
Mcool = Vcool * r * (3600/Tcool) . (Kg/hr)
Where
Vcool: cooling water volume as preset and required for the test.
r : specific gravity of cooling water at the temp. of the point in the
line where the cooling water is installed ( in this case at engine
inlet) a value kg/lit, can be assumed as a rule for this variable
Tcool: time interval required for using up Vcool, (sec).
Repeat the above calculation for each rating and enter the results
obtained in the table.

Page 2

b) Calculate heat loss in cooling water as follows:

Qcool = C * Mcool * (T2 T1) kcal/hr.
Where:
Mcool: cooling water mass flow previously calculated
C: specific water heat that can be assumed to be equal l kcal/kg.C
Ti cooling water temperature at engine inlet (C)
T2: cooling water temperature at engine outlet (C)
Repeat the above calculation for each rating and enter the results
obtained in the table,
c) Draw and discuss the curve: heat loss in cooling water against
