Do you intend to perform karmas or carry sand from rameshwaram then you must read this.

After you land in rameshwaram prepare yourself for the spatika linga dharshan which is available only between 5
and 6 am daily. Do not miss it. You have to get a 50 Rs special ticket and if you had gone on a crowdy day then
you may have to stand in the queue from 4 am to have convenient dharshan. Tiffin is available in a small mess
without board next to sringeri mutt. Only dosais and idlis are available. If you are not particular about the
convenient sitting then u can very well take tiffin here as it is not only cheap but also does not harm your stomach
and is also very tasty.
You have to then catch a prohita if you want to take sand for Kasi. You will have to do sangalpam. The prohita will
place sand before you and will draw bow and arrow perform pooja and you will have to carry it to sea shore and
immerse it. You should then take 36 dips in the sea and then collect sand. With wet clothes you will have to go to
the temple to take bath in the 23 theerthams. The official charge is only rs.25 per head but in reality they may
charge anything between rs.50 to rs.75 so that the person will pour a full bucket of water. You can take a plastic
bottle with you so that you can collect water from all the theerthams for elders and relatives.
The last of these theerthas is called as kodi theertha and is used for daily abhishekam of deities. It is said that
after taking bath in kodi theertham you should aovid staying in rameshwaram that night.
You have to return back to the room change your dress and should be back to do sangalpam again. They will divide
the sand into three parts perfrom pooja and then handover the centre portion to you which you should take to
allahabad for merging in ganges. You can then visit the temple and have dharshan.
If you want to have homely meals there are so many brahmin families to prepare meals for you and they charge
around rs.40. But remember u may have to inform about the number before you leave for temple visit. Do not
forget to visit Ramar patham which is 5 kms from the temple and you can travel by share auto and the charges
differ on day to day basis. Also visit Kothandaraman temple which is about 15 kms . This is the place where it is
said that Vibheshana surrendered to Lord Rama and immediately on advice of rama he was throned as king of
lanka by lakshmana using the sacred sea water.
Visiiing Dhanushkodi is a hectic process now. Your vehicle will be allowed only upto a point 4 kms from actual
dhanushkodi. From there you can hire a jeep which may cost you around 1200 and it will be immemorable to see
a small town which was merged into the sea in 1962.
Have a nice time. Enjoy the sacred place and dharshan.
If time permits.
Don't fail to visit Uthirakosa mangai about 18 kms from ramnad the famous shiva temple. THE TEMPLE HAS A FIVE
FEET NATARAJAR STATUE MADE OF A SINGLE STONE OF MARAGATHA (GREEN). Usually the natarajar is pasted
with sandal through out the year. and only on Margazhi thiruvathirai the paste is being removed and abhishekams
are held. The lord Shiva is very powerful and do not miss te opportunity of visiting this famous temple. It is not
very popular outside as it is not in the main road but still do not miss it.
