We are delighted to host our inaugural Indian Family Wealth Forum 2015 today in Mumbai.
Our next event in Mumbai is our Indian Private Banking Forum 2015 - on Thursday 27th August. Please
also mark the date of our 2016 Family Wealth event in your diary now - Wednesday 6th April.
Business promoters and their families face increasing challenges when it comes to managing and protecting
their assets both in the current generation and for the future.
Succession planning, whether for the business or private family structure, is becoming a major issue for
wealthy Indian families. On the one hand, this is driven by regulatory initiatives and tax transparency. On
the other, it is down to the need to find the right people, with the right intentions, to take the reins. And in
an era where divorce and other disputes are more frequent, the hurdles get higher. Adding to the burden is
the uncertainty over which trust structures and other solutions advisers in India can put in place for families
without falling foul of the law. Or the tax man.
Bolstered by the growing acceptance among wealthy Indians of the need for help to achieve their goals
this creates new opportunities for professional services firms and wealth managers. Yet they must
understand whats required, and be able to bring together the relevant players to offer the right solutions.
Family offices are growing in popularity as a way to handle the myriad of issues that need to be tackled. As
a result, the focus must be determining the right structures and decision-making process. Adding value with
actions, not words, should be the only goal.
Todays agenda includes presentations and panel discussions to cover these issues and others all of which
are key for the development of a more specific focus on finding solutions for wealthy Indian families.
We are also video-recording the presentations and writing up content from the discussions and will send
this to you.

Abhijit Joshi

Veritas Legal has been founded by Abhijit Joshi, a professional with 22 years of experience in
the Indian legal industry and a winner of many national and international accolades. Previously,
he was a senior partner and chief executive officer of AZB & Partners. His key practice areas
included mergers and acquisitions, general corporate and commercial law and private client
law. He has been advising Indian business houses on succession planning for over 15 years and
his private client practice includes estate planning, testamentary dispositions, trust formations,
family arrangements, streamlining of corporate holdings and evolution of specialized
ownership models. He also specializes in mergers and acquisitions, joint ventures, cross border
investments (inbound & outbound), private equity investments and corporate restructuring
(mergers, demergers and spin offs) and various general corporate and commercial matters.
Abhijit has been practicing law since 1993. He started his career with Amarchand & Mangaldas
& Suresh A. Shroff & Co. and then went on to practice with Dua Associates in Mumbai, before
joining AZB & Partners, as one of their first partners, in 2001. He has featured in International
Whos Who Legal as Leading Lawyer for Mergers & Acquisitions 2013 and Prominent Lawyer
in the Franchise Sector. He has also been listed by IFLR1000 as Leading Lawyer for Mergers &

Arpita Vinay

Arpita Vinay, is a part of the founder member team to set up the Private Wealth Business at
Centrum. She leads product management and proposition development for the Private Wealth
business. This includes setting up New Business Opportunities, Family Office proposition for
High Net Worth Individuals, Inheritance and Succession Planning and Real Estate Advisory
Services. She also runs some large and key customer relationships for the business. She has
over a decade of experience in financial services across Private Clients, Wealth Management
& Financial Planning Services. As part of her past roles, she has valuable experience in the
areas of Banking, Customer Proposition Development, Customer segmentation and analytics,
Distribution channel management, Customer experience and Strategic Planning. Prior to
joining Centrum, she was Head Premier Proposition for HSBC where she was responsible

the global re-launch of HSBC Premier. She was also responsible for directing sales of wealth

Gautami Gavankar

Gautami heads the Estate Planning Division and is engaged in offering succession and estate
planning solutions to private clients. She has a rich experience in law and financial services
industry. Gautami set up Kotaks Estate Planning business and has been with Kotak since 2005.
Prior to joining Kotak, Gautami was associated with ICICI Bank for 1 year and was with Kanga
& Company, one of the leading and oldest Law Firms.She is a qualified Solicitor and a member
of Bombay Incorporated Law Society and is also a Law Graduate from Mumbai University.

Ashvini Chopra

Ashvini Chopra is chief executive officer and managing director of Universal Trustees. Ashvini
has over 17 years of experience in the banking and finance industry and has found his passion
in family inheritance management, capital markets and also has a keen interest in economic

private banking. He moved as head of sales for the private banking operations of ICICI Group
in the US and later he was put in charge of rejuvenating the private banking team in the UK as

Bijal is a Partner in the Tax and Funds Practice Group in Mumbai. Prior to joining Khaitan &
Co, she was a Partner at Nishith Desai Associates. Over the years she has advised clients
on matters of fund formation, international tax, tax litigation and asset protection & estate
planning. On the tax advisory front, she focusses on globalization, structuring of inbound /
outbound investments, structuring of onshore and offshore funds, taxation of EPC contracts,
taxation of ecommerce and software contracts. She also actively advises and represents clients
on crossborder tax litigation in India. She is a specialist on legal and tax matters in relation

of experience in banking and financial services with a diverse domain specialization spread
across private wealth management, commercial banking, investment banking, corporate
& retail finance. In his last assignment, Bala was with ICICI Bank as joint general manager,
heading its global private clients for its operations in India, UAE, South Africa, Singapore and
United Kingdom where he managed a team of 150 private bankers with AUM (Assets under
management) more than $ 4 Billion. Before this, he had a stint as Director, UBS AG, Singapore
and handled large NRI relationships and facilitated various cross border transactions. Earlier,
he was with Citi Bank, where he was handling the commercial lending for midsized companies.
During his stint as head of global private clients with ICICI Bank, Bala was instrumental in
making an investment by ICICI Bank to the tune of 20% in a Trusteeship Company which is
Indias first Trusteeship company, Universal Trustees Private Limited. Bala has handled Trust
formation, both domestic and off shore, to facilitate wealth preservation and transition to his
clients, during his career as a Private Banker. He is a Certified Financial Planner and holds a

Navita Yadav

Navita has been active in the Financial Services space in India during the last 2 decades.
In the current role, she is the Chief Executive Officer of IL&FS Trust Company (Group Company
of one of Indias largest Infrastructure Group - IL&FS). Over the last few years, Navita has led
the Company to develop the largest integrated Trustee platform for Corporates raising funds
from Indian Capital Markets and for servicing their long term borrowing programmes. The
Company has since grown to become the largest non Bank Trustees in India, administering
over USD 65 billion in assets across a gamut of Corporate Trust services. Her Specialties
include Corporate Trusteeship and Structuring Services to Infrastructure and Financial sector,
Multi- Family Office, Succession Planning and Family Governance Structures for UHNIs,
Wealth & Private Banking, Investment Advisory and Consumer Banking. Navita has to her
credit the development of one of the largest Family Office Solutions in India. She continues to
contribute to this space as a special invitee to Global Conferences and seminars on Structured
Succession, Inter Generational Transfer of Wealth, and Family Governance Structures.
Previously, Navita was with Axis Bank for almost a decade where she held several key
positions. She has led various businesses ranging from Family Office Services, Wealth &
Global Private Banking as also Priority Banking and Financial Advisory Services at the Bank.
Development and implementation of differentiated banking solutions for mass/ affluent
segments across Consumer Banking businesses in India has been her forte. Early in her career,
Navita had a successful stint with KPMG, India in Management Assurance division where
she handled several key clients for the firm including Banks and Large Corporates. She has
completed her education from University of Delhi with specialisation in Financial Management
and is an alumnus of IIM Kolkata with specialization in International Business.

Neeta works with the Funding Team at Dasra, where she engages individuals in philanthropy
to create social change through the Dasra Giving Circles. Previously, she has worked with Axis
Bank in Product Management and Marketing roles with their credit cards team and helped
launch their suite of premium credit cards. She also spent an exciting year teaching at Riverside
School in Ahmedabad, which gave her a chance to experience the challenges and rewards of
teaching. More recently, she spent a couple of years working in the family business, helping
manage the company during a growth phase. She has earned her Post Graduate Diploma in
Management from Indian Institute of Management Kozhikode and has a bachelors degree in
Economics from Ferguson College, Pune. She enjoys reading, movies and traveling.

Nipun Mehta

Nipun Mehta is a Fellow member of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India and a
highly distinguished professional of the Indian Financial Services industry. His experience
spans across global and domestic institutions like Societe Generale and the IL&FS group, and
across Private Banking and Wealth Management. He is the Founder & CEO of BlueOcean
Capital Advisors. Nipuns last assignment was as Executive Director and India Head Societe
Generale Private Banking. He earned global recognition as The Global Outstanding Young
Private Banker for his work at Societe Generale which spanned across geographies and
across asset classes. Nipun has also played a key role in formulating regulatory policies for the
Indian capital markets by being a part of advisory committees set up by SEBI, including those
like Buy Back of Shares and Derivative Margining. He is frequently invited for his views in

Pranav Khanna

After a completing a masters degree in commerce from Delhi University, Pranav started his
auditing and financial services training with one of the big four accounting firms in London.
This was followed by further positions in other well known accountancy firms in London where
he has gained extensive international work experience with a strong accounting background.
Pranav completed a second masters degree in business administration specialising in finance
before returning to India to help establish the Indian operations for an insurance consultancy
firm, as Head of Strategy and Business Development. This was followed by entrepreneurial
experience as he established his own consultancy practice specialising in risk advisory
services. This became one of the first art insurance consultancy practices that ushered in
high value artefact insurance in India. Before taking over as Managing Director of Nerine
Advisory Services India PVT Ltd Pranav worked with a global financial service provider as Chief
Executive of their Indian office, and was responsible for all Indian operations.

Pranav has over two and half decade of experience in advising clients on the matters related
