Dysthymia

Dunner, David L. "Dysthymia And Double Depression." International Review Of

Psychiatry 17.1 (2005): 3-8. Health Source: Nursing/Academic Edition.
Web. 22 Apr. 2014.
This article discusses treatment options for both Dysthymia and Double
Depression. Double Depression is Dysthymia with episodes of Major Depression.
It also talks about the symptoms and how one can be diagnosed with having
Double Depression. If Dysthymia is left untreated and the proper care is not
sought, it is possibly that Major Depression symptoms will occur. Antidepressants
prescribed are usually effective. Some relapses may happen, the article states.
Finding this information was very beneficial for it describes the depressions and
what can cure them.
"Dysthymia." (dysthymic disorder) Treatment at Mayo Clinic. N.p., n.d. Web. 17
Apr.2014.<http://www.mayoclinic.org/diseasesconditions/dysthymia/basics/treatment/ con-20033879>.
This article goes in depth with each treatment and how they can help lessen the
symptoms of depression. The treatments it talks about are Psychotherapy and
Antidepressants, and how a combination of both can have better results. It talks
about finding the right medication that best suits the person who needs it. Also, it

states that sometimes both treatments do not work and if not properly used may
cause suicidal thoughts. This writer's paper will strengthen with all this
information on treatments.
"Dysthymia." Harvard Mental Health Letter 21.8 (2005): 1-3. Academic Search
Complete.Web. 17 Apr. 2014.
This article provides many details on Dysthymia. It describes symptoms and how
it make a person act differently. Some symptoms could be a loss of appetite, low
self esteem, low energy, changes in sleep, and some cases suicidal thoughts. It
gives causes and types of treatments. Treatments may be drugs or therapy. It
also provides some statistics on Dysthymia and if it could be hereditary. The facts
found will be a huge asset towards the research paper being that is has many
details and again provides information on treatment.
"Dysthymia: Treating Mild Depression's Major Effects." Harvard Health Letter
24.5
(1999): 4-5. CINAHL Plus with Full Text. Web. 22 Apr. 2014.
In this article, the National Insitute of Mental Health does studies on different
patients with Dysthymia. The workers of NIMH do two tests. One on the effects of
antidepressants and a placebo. The other study they performed was treating
patients over three years with Psychotherapy alone and how did that factor out.
What was accomplished in the end was neither antidepressants nor
Psychotherapy are one hundred percent effective on their own. Together both
treatments have an eighty percent chance of not seeing any symptoms of this
depression. If a medication is taken alone, it only has fifty seven percent chance

of being successful and with therapy alone, it will only have thirty six percent
chance of being the same. These statistics will provide vital knowledge to
complete the research needed to find treatment for Dysthymia.

Ishizaki, Junko, and Masaru Mimura. "Dysthymia And Apathy: Diagnosis And
Treatment."Depression Research & Treatment (2011): 1-7. Academic
Search Complete. Web. 17 Apr. 2014.
In this article, they define Dysthymia and how apathy is intertwined with it. It talks
about other diseases that may influence this depression or what this disorder can
lead to. It also discusses how people become diagnosed with this disorder and
the various ways it can be treated. One way the state that can help with
treatment is selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) but says medicine
should be prescribed on the doctor's authority and what they feel will suit that
person best. This article will be very helpful for the research paper because it
gives many different treatment examples, which is needed to answer the
research question.

Kripke, Clarissa. "Drug Treatments For Patients With Dysthymia." American

Family Physician 70.7 (2004): 1269-1270. MEDLINE with Full Text. Web.
22 Apr. 2014.
This article provides a brief study on antidepressants and which have the better
results. The studies took place over four to twelve weeks on patients who have
been suffering from Dysthymia for two years. They found that Tricyclic

antidepressants and Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors have similar mood

effects but the SSRIs have a lower dropout rate. This means that the SSRIs had a
higher success rate and fewer side effects. The article also discussed the dosage
amounts one person should take daily. The most responsive dose was 75 to 100
mg. This paper gives an insight on what steps the psychiatrists might take to give
the patient the proper treatment. These are great facts to know for this writer's
research.
