2.1 Calculation on Empirical & Molecular Formula
Empirical Formulas
the lowest whole number ratio of the atoms in a compound/molecule
- not necessarily represent the actual number of atom in a molecule
Molecular Formulas
show the actual/true formulas of atom of each element in a molecule
Name
Acetylene
Benzene
Ribose
Glucose

Table: Examples of Molecular & Empirical Formula

Molecular (actual formula)
Empirical (simplest formula)
C2H2

C6H6
CH
C5H10O5
CH2O
C6H12O6
CH2O

Guide to calculating
Empirical Formula

STEP 1

Calculate the moles of each element

STEP 2

Divide by smallest number of moles

STEP 3

Use lowest whole number ratio of moles as

subscripts

Example:

Guide to calculating a
MF from an EF

STEP 1

Calculate the EF mass

STEP 2

Divide the molar mass by the EF mass to

obtain a small integer

STEP 3

Multiply the ef by an integer to obtain the MF

Integer x EF

2.2 Percent Composition

-

% composition of elements present in a compound in the mass % of each element

by dividing the mass of each element with molar mass & then x 100%
Mass % of each
element in a compound

mass or molar mass of each element

mass or molar mass of compound

x 100%

Guide to
calculating %
composition

Determine the total mass of each element in

the molar mass of a formula

Divide the total mass of each element

by the mass
& multiply to 100%
