Course Summary
The Certificate in Quantity Surveying is designed to provide the principles, tools and
techniques for the commercial management of construction projects. It will prepare a
candidate to be a pro-active quantity surveyor with a good grasp of the breadth of topics
which are important in the industry.
The learning activities within this advanced course draw on both the hypothetical
situations commonly found in quantity surveying and from ones personal experience
within the workplace. In addition, candidates will be asked to discuss small case studies and
projects from their work environment and will have the opportunity to collaborate and
share these work experiences with subject matter experts and their peers through the
Online Academy.
In completing this course, candidates will develop a significant understanding of the range
of commercial and contractual skills required to provide reasoned advice to clients or
colleagues
Who is this course for?
This course is ideal for professionals who have worked in the commercial or contractual
management of construction for at least 3 years, with some prior cognate learning, wishing to
progress to professional membership of the RICS. It is also suitable for anyone pursuing a
career in Quantity Surveying and related disciplines and having a particular interest and
specialising in all or some aspects of Quantity Surveying.
This course is aimed at individuals who currently may work as quantity surveyors and
assistant quantity surveyors, contract managers, estimators, facilities managers or project
managers.

Course Structure
This distance learning course is delivered across 24 weeks (6 months) modular topics
which provide delegates with a deep understanding of the globally applicable Quantity
Surveying standards at an advanced level.

Specifically chosen the e-learning courses within this module will assist delegates in gaining an
understanding of the globally applicable standards of Quantity Surveying.

Simple case studies within the distance and blended approach assist in bringing the theory
to life. Delegates are provided with structured case studies, which will direct them to share
their answers with their fellow delegates within the module forum and web class sessions.

Virtual Learning
Virtual learning sessions have been design to support the delegates and help consolidate
their knowledge. These structured training sessions will allow the tutor to teach and
explain the knowledge and theory in a live environment. Being online is like a face to face
session without the need to leave the office, so delegates can be based anywhere
geographically.

This supported on-line learning course will provide guidance on the requirements for the
following competencies and links to additional resources to support individual study and will
provide a clear understanding of:
Procurement and pre-contract estimating and tendering
Contract administration and value and risk management
Measurement
Project management and dispute resolution
Life cycle costing
The materials included aim to provide a clear understanding of:
The various forms of construction used for the major elements of a building
including piling, building services and civil engineering
The major procurement routes used for construction projects
The different tendering options and their associated documentation
The use of cost planning and value management in the financial control of projects
The use of NRM1 for cost planning
The choice of different standard methods of measurement
Quantification and costing for projects including the use of NRM2 and CESMM4
The various standard forms of contract
The role of the contract administrator in the management of a construction project
The various provisions contained within standard forms of contract related to
financial management
The contractual procedures used in relation to time and change management
including insurances and insolvency, and
Risk management and strategies to mitigate risk.

Learning Outcomes
Upon reaching the end of each unit, candidates should have a gained the required
knowledge and understanding to be able to:
Critically consider the various forms of construction used for the major elements
of a building including building services;
Recognise and analyse the various factors that influence the choice of a design
solution;
Critically evaluate of the clients requirements with regards his brief for a
project;
Evaluate the different procurement routes used for construction projects and
critically evaluate the different strategies that could be employed including the
implications of BIM;
Be able to articulate the choice of different tendering options and their
associated documentation;
Have a detailed understanding of the factors that affect the whole life cost of
different elements of a building;
Discuss the role of cost planning and value management in the financial control of
projects during the design development stage;
Critically understand the use of different standard methods of measurement and
advise on appropriate methods of quantification and costing for a range of projects;
Critically discuss and advise on the various forms of contract available for a project
and the implications of selecting a particular form;
Articulate and interpret the role of the contract administrator in the management of
a construction project;
Advise on the various provisions contained within standard forms of contract and
appropriate administrative and contractual procedures necessary for the smooth
running of a project and achieving the parties objectives
Identify and contribute to the identification of risk and contribute to strategies to
mitigate risk

This course is made of up of 8 units delivered across a 24 weeks (6 month) training course.

End of Course Assessment


You will be assessed through an online examination hosted by the RICS Online Academy.
The online examination will take place at the end of the 6 month course and you will need to
acquire the requisite minimum score to successfully complete the course.
Upon successful completion of the course delegates would have completed 150 CPD hours
study over the 6 month period. Delegates will also receive a certificate of course completion
confirming you have successfully attended and passed the RICS Certificate in Quantity
Surveying
Exam Extensions
Towards the end of the 6 months course, there is a one month window to complete the exam. In
case you are unable to attempt/clear the exam before this exam window closes, you can
request a course extension, priced at Rs. 5000 plus applicable service tax which will give a
further two attempts and two weeks extension to re-attempt the exam.
Deferral
We can defer you onto the next available course however deferral fees are priced at Rs 20000
plus applicable service tax, which defers your enrolment onto the next available course, hence
providing further 6 months access inclusive of exam fees.
