BOE reorganization

Township council
holds 2016
reorganization
By ZANE CLARK
The Sun
Similar to many municipalities across the state, Jan. 4
marked the annual reorganization meeting for the Evesham
Township Council.
As there were no municipal
elections in Evesham this past
November, there were no officials
to be sworn in for seats on council. However, following councils
yearly tradition, the position of
deputy mayor rotated between
council members, with Ken DAndrea sworn in as the townships
new deputy mayor for 2016.
At the meeting, Mayor Randy
Brown noted that DAndrea and
every member of the current
council has held the position of
deputy mayor before, as well as

The Evesham Township Police
Department Officer of the
Month for December is Officer
Christine Schmidt.
Schmidt has been a member of
the Evesham Police Department
for 15 years.
Schmidt is being commended
for her quick actions that saved a
women's life and the life of her
unborn child.
On Dec. 19 at approximately
11:34 p.m., Schmidt and several
other officers responded to a
home in the Woodlands development for a report of a pregnant female who was unconscious and
barely breathing from an apparent drug overdose.
Upon arrival, Schmidt found
the female unresponsive with labored breathing on the floor of
the basement.
Prior to entering the scene,
Schmidt wisely secured her is-

Within seconds, the female positively reacted to the medication
by regaining consciousness and
normal breathing.
The female was transported to
a local hospital, where she received further medical treatment.
Schmidts quick thinking and
her calm and proper deployment
of the Nasal Narcan Unit saved
not only the life of the female, but

ACLU: The big bully

108 Kings Highway East

Haddonfield, NJ 08033

Under pressure from organization, school eliminates God bless America

ifteen years ago, following the
attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, there
was one song that became a rallying cry for our country. God Bless
America was sung by Americans
everywhere, regardless of their ethnic
background or religious beliefs.
The most public places where this
took place were at professional sporting events before the start of NFL
games and in the seventh inning
stretch of MLB games. Fifteen years
later, the practice still continues at
many sporting venues in the United
States.
Piggybacking on this practice, an elementary school in a local school district began saying God bless America following the Pledge of Allegiance,
which, lets not forget, also includes

Your thoughts
What are your thoughts on God bless
America in our public schools? Share
your thoughts on this, and other topics,

the word god.

But now, 15 years into this practice,
the American Civil Liberties Union
has said enough is enough, and Glenview Elementary School in Haddon
Heights will no longer be saying God
bless America.
The principal at the school, Sam Sassano, defended the practice, writing to
parents that, it has been our view that
the practice is fundamentally patriotic
in nature and does not invoke or advance any religious message, despite
the specific reference to Gods bless-

ing. Alas, the school wont be having

its students say the phrase God bless
America after they say one nation,
under God.
Congratulations, ACLU, you have
succeeded. While children will be
taught about the founding of our country and the rights we as Americans
have, they will be faced with the fact
that if a group as big or as strong as
the ACLU pressures you, you have no
choice but to succumb to its wishes.
While our children will be learning
about the dangers of bullying, they
will be confronted with the fact that if
you are big enough and if you bully
hard enough, you can get what you
want.
Thank you, ACLU. Keep fighting the
good fight.

DAndrea: Honor to serve

DANDREA
Continued from page 1
handled responsibilities such as
wedding ceremonies, ribbon cuttings and acting as leaders of special projects.
Brown said the council and
township were fortunate to have
voters who entrusted all five
members of council to act almost
interchangeably when the need
arises.
Im the elected the mayor, but
Im one of five, Brown said.
Doesnt matter which one of the
five of us, its just been tremendous. And who has a title, to me a
title is a title, and all five of us
have just done a great job in whatever entity or task weve put them
through.
Brown also praised the work of
Councilmember Bob DiEnna,
who held the position of deputy
mayor throughout 2015.
Bob was ready at the drop of
the hat to do anything, go anywhere, Brown said.
Brown also briefly outlined the
direction he hopes the township

can take in 2016.

Brown said the township was
now several years into having
taken over management of the Indian Spring golf course, five
major redevelopment projects
would be underway in the next 12
months, recreation facilities
would continues to improve, and
community events would continue and expand this year with the
addition of a Thanksgiving Day
Turkey Run.
Sticking with the theme of
community events, Brown also
reflected on the ability for the municipalitys other organizations to
come together throughout the
year and give back to the community, such as with helping those
displaced by house fires or raising money to provide Christmas
presents for the townships less
fortunate children.
Im so proud of those things.
No, that doesnt reduce your property taxes, but you know what,
who cares? What it does do is it
brings that community together
and makes them realize you
got a great place to live, Brown
said.
Other members of council also
used the reorganization meeting

to reflect on serving the township

in the future.
Councilmember Debbie Hackman said it was an honor to continue serving with her fellow
councilmembers and also praised
the townships staff for doing the
day-to-day work that keeps the
municipality running.
We wouldnt be able to do
what we do without the support
that we have here, Hackman
said.
DiEnna also noted the praise
he hears for the township in passing at public events he attends
where visitors from out of town
may not even know he serves on
town council.
When you hear stuff from
folks from out of the area, and
perhaps we take it for granted
after we do it, but other folks are
watching and interested, DiEnna said.
DAndrea said he also considered it to be a continued honor to
serve the community.
Living here my whole life,
thats what you do, and we do
what we do because its the right
thing to do, to give back to a town
and to a community thats given
us so much, DAndrea said.
