Dear Brother LacFarland,
Enclosed is a news letter concernin.f? our work here

in Jai;.aica.

The second unit of the Bible Seminary is

almost coiupleted and v/e loorc fon-zard to a fine nevr student

class in l'^y
On the first of Janixary, Carol and I began v/orking in
a new section of Kingston, establishing a congregation.

There were 2? present last Lord's Day and an average atten

dance of about 20 since its beginning.

This church is being

established in one of the best sections of the city of

.Kingston and is bringing the Gospel into the homes of educated

working people of Jamaica.

We hope to be able to purchase a

piece of land and bej^in building b: the end of the year.

Could you make mention of this in the HOUIZOl'.S:

A' com

pletely new set of Jamaican stories for use in Daily Vacation

Bible Schools has been prepared and may be obtained by writing
to us here in Jamaica.

These are Christ-centered stories based

on true missionary experiences.

Ko charge will be made, but a

lovely hand woven basket may be purchased for 300 for use as
an offering basket.

Enclosed find a small contribution for the stamps that we

have received.

Dear Friends,

THE EVENTS OF THIS PAST MONTH have made us long to write to you and give you Just a
glimpse of our own family life here in Jam^tica. It is truly a time of rejoicing
for a little one has come into our home. Little Peter, as we named him, came
to
our home as a surprise, and yet after much longing. We have prayed and have seen
the Glory of the Lord as He has worked aH things together for good.

Two months ago we heard, through friends, of a German couple who had several child

ren and who did not love them and were giving them away. Two other missionary cou
ples had taken tivo of the children.

We beoame interested and decided to make

trip to inquire about the family. Upon arrival in Montego Bay, we were met by the
aunt of the children who had nade a long trip to the hotel with the youngest of the
family in her arms. She did not know of our coming, but
told us that the parents had gone to Canada and left the
child with her to give away to someone, perhaps a pass
ing tourist wanting a v^ite child. Little Peter, starv

ing for love, and unwanted by family or friends,

found

refuge in the hearts of his new parents.

PETER'S BIG BLUE EYES, straight blonde hair, and

deep
dingles, are as precious as his generous ^d
loving
heart, Jesus said, "VJhoso receiveth one such little one
in my name," receiveth me." We believe that Peter
was
sent to us and we pray that God will someday use him to
firing souls into His Kingdom#

QCS) IS ABLE!

Dear Friends,

Sometimes our human strength is weak and our wisdom fails# But
isn't it a wonderful joy to see how God can take the feeble efforts
that we make and use them to glorify himself? What a precioub promise

He has made to us, that he is able to do, "eaoceeding abundantly above

all that we ask or think,"

We have claimed this promise!

Another month has passed in the little congregation dji Half-Way

Tree. The crowning glory of the month came this past week with the

baptism of Mr . Tom Adam, an influencial man in the city here. Never

have we seen or knoi^m a man to be more thoroughly converted from a

life of sin to a glorious life in Christ.

He is a \Aiite man, and

previously moved in a circle of Godless men and wtsnen of a high society

class.

FREAM

mr. and. mrs. woodrow phillips

It would have melted your hearts to see him go down into town

into a humble little nati^ve building where Jim buried him with his lord
in baptism in a pit pool that was far from desirable.

Like the Ethiopian of old, he went his way rejoicing. In this

week that has followed he has spent his days and hours taJJctog to his

neighbors and friends and trying to win them to Christ. This morning
finds him at the Seminary building taking classes with the native stu
dents, learning more about the Scriptures,

On Sunday Mr. Adam and his wife both came into fellowship, and

also his wife's sister, both of vrtiom were formerly baptized but had

strayed away from the Lord. With three additions, we are now able^to

move ahead with a little more help. There are now twelve members in

the congregation. Another attendance record was broken Sunday with 34

present. How we do covet your prayers that we might continue to grow.
The weather is growing hotter day by day and we find infections
and illnesses more prevalent. Jim has been ill with cold that has
settled in his back. Johnny ran a high fever a week ago but is better
now. He is certainly growing into a fine boy. How grateful we are to
you for your interest and encouragement to us! God bless you*

SHELTERING LITTLE BOYS

Dear Friends in the Gospel,

In September of 1953 we travelled to the city of Montego Bay, having become interested
in a German-Jamaican settlement there.

The following morning after our arrival, we were

approached by a woman who wanted to give away a lovely little boy of two and a half years.
We feel that you would have done exactly as we didaccepted him as our own. In a few
days we were happily adjusted and felt a real blessing to our home.
Peter found parents
who wanted him and loved him.

In March of this year, we took another step and accepted an eight year old boy, John
Gardner, into our home. Johnny was forsaken by parents, almost starved, imwanted by

friends and neighbors, and living in a

you would have taken Johnny in, too.
so anxiously offered to give him away,
for the opportunity of sheltering him

tiny house with no adult care. Again we felt that

Then in August, when little Andrew Hacker's mother
we could only thank God for another little boy and
from the curses of his drunken father.

During the months of training and rearing these little boys, the burden of destitute
children in Jamaica has weighed heavily upon our hearts.

Over and over we have received

appeals from mothers and neighbors who have children or know of children in desperate,
heart-breaking conditions. We are faced with this fundamental fact of true Christian ser
vice, of "pure religion" according to James in the New Testament: that it is God's perfect will
to care for unfortunate, neglected children.

After much prayer and consultation with the missionaries and with Jamaican friends and
authorities, we have found a real spirit of Christian generosity toward our hopes for the
establishment of a Home for Boys here in Jamaica.
THIS HOME WOULD BE A HOME WITH AN EVANGELISTIC PURPOSE: TO REAR
BOYS TO BE PREACHERS, CHRISTIAN WORKERS, ELDERS AND DEACONS IN THE

CHURCHES, OR CHRISTIANS IN ANY WALK OF LIFE.

It will be possible for us to shelter at least another four boys in our own home before we
will need another building.

However, we feel the need now to begin our plans for the pur

chase of a piece of land and a permanent building. This Home already has become a small
reality within the walls of our own home. We need your prayers, interest, and encourage
ment now, to help this HOME to grow into a greater haven of protection and an institute of
training into the glorious Christian life for these precious boys. Shall we continue to reach
out and to claim these precious lives for the Lord Jesus?

What would you do?
