FromtheRoyaltombsatUrdatingabout3,000BC.comesomeverybeautifulthingsthefamousgolddaggerofUr,a
weaponwhosebladeisgold,itshiltoflapislazulidecoratedwithgoldstuds,anditssheathofgoldfiligreework.With
itwasanotherobjectscarcelylessremarkable,aconeshapedcontainerofgold,ornamentedwithaspiralpatternand
containingasetoflittletoiletinstruments,tweezers,lancet,andpencilalsoofgold.Theroyalgravesallhaveaharp.
Themostmagnificentyetfoundhasasoundingboxborderedwithabroadedgingofmosaicinred,whiteandblue.
Thetwouprightswereencrustedwithwhiteshellandlapislazuliandredstonearrangedinzonesseparatedwithwide
goldbands.Shellplaquesengravedwithanimalscenesadornedthefront,andabovetheseprojectedasplendidhead
ofabeardedbullwroughtinheavygold,withalapislazulibeard.
QueenShubadonherdeathbedworeanornateheaddressmadeofalonggoldhairribboncoveredbybeadedwreaths
withgoldpendants,heavyearringsofgoldandagoldenSpanishtypecombwithfivepointsendinginlapiscentred
flowersofgold.Bythesideofthebodylayasecondheaddress.Onadiademmadeofsoftwhiteleatherhadbeensewn
thousandsofminutelapislazulibeads,andagainstthisbackgroundofsolidblueweresetarowofexquisitely
fashionedgoldanimals,stags,gazelles,bullsandgoats,withbetweenthemclustersofpomegranates,threefruit
hangingtogethershieldedbytheirleaves.

dispute.Severalcylindersealsinhertombidentifyherbythetitle"nin"or"eresh",aSumerianwordwhichcandenote
aqueenorapriestess.ThefactthatPuabi,herselfaSemiticAkkadian,wasanimportantfigureamongSumerians,
indicatesahighdegreeofculturalexchangeandinfluencebetweentheancientSumeriansandtheirSemiticneighbors.

Thefirstsettlementsofsmallvillages,somecoalescingintotowns,werebuiltbytheUbaidians,thenomadictribes
fromAlUbaidsite.Thesesettlements,laterknownastheSumeriancivilization,graduallydevelopedintosophisticated
citystates,namelyUruk,Kish,Umma,Lagash,Larsa,NippurandUr,themostcelebratedofall.Duringthecenturies
thatfollowed,theAkkadians,Babylonians,Assyrians,Hittites,Chaldeans,Israelites,Pheonicians,andElamites
(Persians)establishedtheirkingdomsintheregionthefoundationforfuturecivilizations,onwhichmanycultures
succeeded.
Untilthemid19thcenturytheexistenceoftheSumerianswasmerelynotsuspected.Thefirstmajorexcavations
leadingtothediscoveryofSumerwereconductedin18421854attheAssyrianlibraryofKingAshurbanipalat
Nineveh.Duringthelate19thcentury,aseriesofexcavationswasundertakenatLagashandNippur.Inthelate1920's
andearly1930's,duringalmost20yearsofimmenseexcavation18feetbelowthegroundlevel,thejointBritish
AmericanteamledbythearchaeologistSirLeonardWoolleyassistedbySirMaxMallowanandhiswife,themystery
novelistAgathaChristiemadesensationaldiscoveriesatthecityofUr(biblical,UroftheChaldees,thebirthplaceof
PatriarchAbraham,thesonofthewealthyshekhTerah).
Thearchaeologicalfindsincluded:amassivepyramidalandamazinglywellpreservedtempleaziggurat,known
todayasTallalMukayyar,c.2,100B.C.theRoyalCemeteryatUr,filledwithvaluablejewelryandgoldartifacts,
includingseveralmusicalinstrumentsfloodstrataadepositofsiltmeasuring11feetindepth,theevidenceofthe
Nuh'sFloodfromthetimesofNoah,c.4,0003,000B.C.
The4,500yearoldcemeteryatUrwasinuseforalmostfivehundredyears.Themostrenownoftheburials,described
byWoolleyas"RoyalTombs",datedfromtheEarlyDynasticIIIperiod,c.2,6002,500B.C.Amongthe1,800gravesof
"commonfolk",containingtheremainsofnearly2,000people,thereweresixteen"royaltombs"withtheremainsof
manyattendants,suggestinghumansacrifices,probablycarriedoutamongwillingparticipants.Musicians,soldiers,
courtiers,andservantshadaccompaniedtheirkingsandqueensintotheafterlife.Someofthemostbeautifulartifacts
ofSumerianartwerefoundmostlyatthe"royaltombs".Theluxuriouscontentsincludedrichlyadornedheaddresses,
ritualgolddaggers,cupsmadeofgoldandsilver,alabasterbowls,goldvessels,thousandofsmallbeadsoflapis
lazuli,personalornaments,goldpinsandamulets,ringsandnecklaces,solidgoldbull'sheadsontopsofembellished
woodenharpsandlyres,mosaicpanels,cuneiformtablets,sledgesandchariots,helmetsandspears,horsesand
oxen,agoldstatuetteofaramcaughtinathicket(recallingAbraham'sramsacrifice),andofferingsoffood.

ThetreasuresrecoveredfromtheRoyalCemeteryatUrweresubsequentlydividedamongtheUniversity
MuseumofPennsylvaniainPhiladelphia,theBritishMuseuminLondonandtheIraqiNationalMuseumin
Baghdad.
Cataloguedas"privategrave"PG800,theremainsofLadyPuabi,knownalsoas"QueenShubAd"were
found.Hernamewasidentifiedbytheinscriptiononalapislazulicylindersealthatlaidonhershoulder.

burialchamberhadbeen"guarded"byfivemenwithcopperdaggers.Theharpist"seated"atthecornerstill
accompaniedhis/her"divine"queentothenextworld.Closeby,theremnantsoftwowoodenframeswithmany
separatepartswerefound.ThemodernreproductionbecameachallengeforWoolley.Hereconstructedtheobject,but
wasneverhappywiththeresult.Actually,thisparticularrestorationsufferedfromtheproblemthattheframes,

appearedtobethatofaharpandalyre,longburiedtogether,wererestoredasonemusicalinstrument.Lateron,a
separationwasachievedinformoftwoinstruments:theharp,decoratedwithabull'shead,andwithapatternofgold
onthesoundbox,andthelyrewithrectangularsoundbox,andwiththegoldenbull'sheadonitstop.Inthelate1960s,
anewsilverylyrewasreconstructedfromthemanypiecesstillleft.Thewoodenpartsandthestringsonthe
instrumentsaremodern,butthelapislazuli,shellandlimestonemosaic,setinbitumenareancient.Thegoldbull's
head(butnotthehorns)ononeofthelyresareancient,andtherestoredhornsontheotherlyrehavebeenmadeof
ivory.Allthreeinstrumentsareelevenstringedones,buttheshapeofthesoundboxes,alongwiththelengthofthe
stringsdistinctthem.Thestringsoftheharp,fastenedonthewoodenbeam,pointedupwardwithgoldrings(ortuning
pegs)areofdiminishinglengths,whilethestringsofthelyresarerelativelyequalinlength.Thesethreeinstruments,
themasterpiecesofSumerianart,datedc.2,6002,350B.C.,knownastheHarpfromUr,theQueen'sLyre,andthe
SilverLyre,arenowpreservedattheBritishMuseum.

impressionleftbythedisintegratedwood.Theelevenstringsfastenedontherectangularsoundboxaremodern.The
frontofthesoundboxisdecoratedwiththemosaicplaque,trapezoidalinshapeandsetinbitumen.Inoneoffour
scenes,depictingmythologicalcreatures,aseatedanimalonagerorbearplaysasimilarlyre.Curiously,thestrings
ofthelyrearebeingpluckedwiththefingers(insteadofhoofs)byananimalhavingahumanhand.
TheGreatLyre,datedc.2,750B.C.,regardedasatreasureoftheancientworldhadbeenrecreatedbyLeonard

skeletonslaidinrows,sidebyside,asifasleep.Themusicians,fullyarmedsoldiers,andcourtladiesinwaiting,
elegantlydressedinsilkwithgoldembroiderywouldfollowtheir"divine"masterintohisgrave.Inthisgigantic"death
pit",suggestingamasssuicide,probablycausedbydespair(becausethekingwasgone,orthecitywasdestroyed
onceagain,orbecauseoforgiesoraritualsacrificeorceremonialdrinkingofadrugorapoisonousliquid),the
mysteryoftheSumerianswerediscovered.Itseemsthattheybelievedincontinuationoflifeafterdeath,describedby
manyas"adarkabodeofmiserableshadowswhereeternitywasspentinawretchedexistence"eventhoughtheir
"gods"offerednoexplanationofanysuchexistence.Asthegravewasdugout,twomoremusicalinstrumentswere
uncovered.Theylaidontopofeachother,andhadbeencrushedtogetherbytheweightoftheearthlayer.Eventually,
duringtheprocessofrestorationtheyhadbeenseparated.Therectangularsoundboxwithmotherofpearlinlaywas
decoratedwithasolidgoldbull'shead,wearingsolidgoldbeard(nolapislazuli)andsolidgoldhorns.Thesetwo
instrumentsknownastheQueen'sGoldenHarpandtheLyreofQueenShubAd,c.2,600B.C.wereincludedinthe

Mesopotamianculturewerestolen,badlydamagedordisappeared,perhapsforever.Amongthelosttreasuresare
Sumerianharpsandlyres.Someelementsofthemusicalinstruments,likesilverplatingandinlaysofgems,ivoryand

motherofpearlhavebeenstrippedoff.Thesolidgoldheadofabullwasstolen.Fortunately,thankstothemuseum
practicesandthearchaeologists'foresight,hundredsofrelicsfromtheancientSumeriahavebeendistributed
worldwidefollowingexcavationbytheBritishAmericanteam.
Finally,aftermorethenfortyeightcenturies,theworldreceivednotonlyaglimpsetothepast,butmanyexactreplicas
ofthebestgoldenobjects,includingseveralharpsandlyres.ThemantowhomweoweallofthisisSirLeonard
Woolley(18801960).

SirLeonardWoolleywiththetriangularframeofanexcavatedSumerianharp,1920s.(Plastercast.)
Suchaframeisanarchetypeforthemoredevelopedmediaevalandmodernframedharps.

distinctionbetweenharpandlyre.ThelyresfoundedattheRoyalCemeteryatUrhavebeenmisinterpretedasaharp.
Duetocommonuseofrectangularsoundboxes,identicalSumerianinstruments,withtwoarmsconnectinga
crossbar,werecalledharporlyre,dependingonthediscoverer'spreference.Itresultedinhavinglyreasmaller
instrumentbeingcalled"harp",andlesserformsofharpbeingcalledlyres.Themainelementwhichdistinguishes
thesetwoinstruments(ifnottheshapeofthesoundboxortheframe)arethestrings:diminishinginlengthinharp,
andalmostequalinlengthinthelyre.MostSumerianlyreshadelevenstrings,anditisassumedthateachstring
producedadifferentsound,thussuggestingthatSumerianmusicforthelyrewasmorecomplicatedthanits
contemporaryEgyptianmusic,writtenforfourstringedlyre.ThelargeSumerianlyreswouldhavesoundedsomewhat
likeastringeddeeptonebass,andwouldhaveproducedavoluminoussound,aspowerfulasabull'sbellowing,

OnJuly6,2003,aTVprogramontherecoveredartifactsthatbelongtoIraqMuseuminBaghdadwasairedbyThe
NationalGeographic.TheHarpofUrwasshownbeinginamiserablecondition,brokenintothreeseparateparts:the
twoverticalarmsandtheresonatingbox.Theresonatingboxandtheframe,bothdecoratedwithmotherofpearlinlaid
mosaic,arebadlysmashedandlargepartsofthemosaicmissing.ThisTVprogramreportedthesensationaldiscovery
madeonJune12,2003,atthesiteofIraq'sCentralBankinBaghdad.Inthedestroyedbankbuilding,inunderground
vaults,floodedwithsewerwatersandhiddenbehinddoublewalls,aUSrecoveryteamandIraqiofficialsunexpectedly
foundinwoodencasesthesocalledNimrudTreasure,i.e.thefabledcollectionofgoldenjewelrythatwasunearthedin
the1980sbyanIraqiarcheologicalexpeditionintheAssyrianroyaltombsinNimrud.TheNimrudTreasurehadbeen

However,EnlilwasnotcompletelysuccessfulbecausemostofEnkisplanhadworked.Forcenturiesafterwards,
humansattemptedtoduplicatetheconcoctionofgoldthegodsusedtomaintaintheiryouthandhealth,andthosewith
theknowledgewereabletomanufacturesubstitutesforawhile.But,muchalsohadtodowiththeDNAcontentofthe
individual.
ThemorepureAnunnakiDNA,thebetterchanceonehadofhavinglongevity,etc.Then,combinetheDNAwithspiritual
awakeningtothebody,blood,andspiritwithnutritionalsupplements,andeachhumanwillknowwhotheyare
gardeners,andcaretakersoftheEarth,notowners.Humansareheretomaintainbeauty,harmonyandbalancethat
wasfirstgiventousaftertheEarthwascreated.Wearenottobeinterestedonlyinourselves.
