Werklust - Biography of a Landscape in Transition

nai010 publishers 2015 ISBN 9789462082441 Acqn 25351
Pb 24x30cm 352pp 190ills 125col 43.95
For 40 years, and with a sense of fascination, Theo Baart has been photographing the fate of the
landscape of his youth: the area near Schiphol Airport. Nowhere else in the Netherlands is the
landscape under so much pressure; all the themes relating to spatial planning come to a head in
this region, in a magnified form. He talks about the demolition of the suburb in the context of the
plans for the centre of Hoofddorp, and the flooding of a once-empty polder with major
infrastructure. Theo Baart photographs the everyday landscape as a mirror of Dutch culture.
'Werklust' shows how the Dutch landscape has been completely turned on its head over the past
40 years, based on a single example.

Alberto Burri's Teatro Continuo

Pb 15x20cm 112pp 45ills 10col 21.50
The reconstruction of Alberto Burris Teatro Continuo in its original location, some twenty-six
years after it was dismantled, provides an ideal opportunity to retrace its history, and place the
work in its critical and historical context. Gabi Scardis book is accompanied by plans, sketches
and photographs, as well as by Paola Di Bellos photo reportage, that documents the relocation
process and the return of this emblematic work to the city. Created in Milans Parco Sempione in
1973 to mark the XV Triennale, the Teatro Continuo is one of Alberto Burris major public works.

This is the first issue of a publication documenting the architecture festival organised by faculty of
the Polo territoriale di Mantova of the Politecnico di Milano. From 2012 to 2014, a series of
conferences, workshops, exhibitions, and lessons took place at the school, attended by
internationally renowned architects and designers such as Tadao Ando, Joo Lus Carrilho da
Graa, Gonalo Byrne, and Alberto Campo Baeza. These occasions for stimulating and
innovative design research, which transpired in continuous dialogue with the city and surrounding
environment, have given rise to thought-provoking results, collective ways of working, and
recognition of necessary hierarchies.

Rahul Mehrotra - Novartis Campus Virchow 16

Christoph Merian Verlag 2015 ISBN 9783856166670 Acqn 25675
Hb 24x31cm 92pp col ills 42.50
The building at Virchow 16 was designed by the Indian architect and urban planner Rahul
Mehrotra, who teaches at Harvard Graduate School of Design in the United States. The building
houses both laboratories and offices. The laboratories require higher ceilings than the rooms
dedicated to administration. An atrium with greenery inside addresses these differences,
balancing them out with staircases and through-views that visually link the various levels. The
western faade facing the Campus also has greenery and thus anticipates the green inside. An
impressive installation by Pipilotti Rist is to be found on the granite floor of the entrance.

Herzog And De Meuron - Novartis Campus Asklepios 8

Christoph Merian Verlag 2015 ISBN 9783856166663 Acqn 25676
Hb 24x31cm 112pp col ills 51.95
Directly on the bank of the Rhine, at the north-eastern periphery of the Novartis Campus, is the
high-rise building by Basel architects Herzog & de Meuron which forms a link between the
Campus and the Rhine promenade. On the side of the building facing the river there is a public
restaurant which functions like a huge plinth for the towering building. The building at Asklepios 8
doubles, so to speak, the building height envisaged in the master plan by means of a three-storey
volume with a clear structure visible from the outside. What seems like innumerable rounds
supports staggered downwards cause the faade to appear filigree and to shimmer optically.

S Am 14 - Constructing Film
Christoph Merian Verlag 2015 ISBN 9783856166649 Acqn 25714
Pb 23x30cm 128pp 50ills 20col 22.50
Film and architecture have numerous points where they overlap and coincide, and these are
explored in S AM 14. Given its multidimensionality, film is an appropriate medium for realistically
reproducing architecture. Furthermore, like the film director, the architect guides sequences of
action through spatial structures. Finally, there is the interesting interplay: to what extent does
filmic seeing produce new possibilities for seeing architecture? The projects presented include
the Ricola Herb Centre in Laufen (Herzog & de Meuron), the Art Museum in Appenzell (Gigon
Guyer) and the Bardill atelier in Scharans (Valerio Olgiati).

Gestures - Atmospheric Perception And Architecture

ArtEZ Press 2015 ISBN 9789089101198 Acqn 25797
Pb 17x24cm 160pp 105ills 45col 18
What author Ton Verstegen means by 'gestures' are the suggestions, signals and hints that
people pick up in everyday situations, such as a conversation, but which are not consciously
perceived. It is through such gestures that interaction occurs between people and their
environment. In this book Ton Verstegen explores that interaction from a number of different
perspectives, including those of sociology and ecology.
The special role of architecture in this interaction is illustrated with reference to the work of
various architects such as Neutelings Riedijk Architects, NOX, Wiel Arets, Michael Bell, Lars
Lerup, Peter Wilson, and Peter Zumthor.
The first section, in which Ton Verstegen sets out his main argument, is followed by several
essyas in which he examines a number of subthemes in more detail. Finally, there are short
biographies of major thinkers, writers, and architects whose work is relevant to the subject matter
of this book.

Volume 46 Shelter
Archis Foundation 2015 ISBN 9789077966464 Acqn 25817
Pb 20x27cm 120pp 80ills 60col 17.50
Shelter is most immediately associated today with conditions of disaster, displacement and
destitution. There is an inherent urgency to the word; it is first and foremost a necessity, a human
right even. Yet thought of as the absolute minimum necessary to survive, shelter is an
architectural stigma. Shelter is not a thing though; shelter is a verb; if there is such a thing as
shelter, it is because whatever it is, shelters. 'Volume 46' is dedicated to the question of how
shelter can be reformulated as an architectural project.
