Title Component retention mechanism
Abstract A component retention mechanism facilitates improved installation, retention and removal of
hardware components (e.g., PCI cards) on a personal computer. The retention mechanism
includes a locking component, support member, and release mechanism coupled to each other.
The locking component can be a steel bar or other stiff item positioned proximate to multiple
socket connectors on a circuit board. The locking component moves between unlocked and
locked positions that mechanically and simultaneously unlock or lock in place multiple add-in cards
inserted into the socket connectors. The support member moves and thereby facilitates movement
of the locking component between locked and unlocked positions. The release mechanism
facilitates movement of the support member and is actuated when a force is exerted by a user
thereto. An associated slider housing coupled to the release mechanism and support member
includes a fan, support shelves and a door that provides additional support to oversized PCI
cards.

Title Use of on-chip frame buffer to improve lcd response time by overdriving
Abstract A method and system is disclosed for improving the response time of displays, such as liquid
crystal displays (LCDs). The method includes receiving a target picture frame and comparing it
to a current picture frame. If the comparison shows that a display may be unable to transition
from a current pixel intensity level to a target pixel intensity level within a specified time period,
then the pixels that correspond to those current pixel intensities that may not be reach target pixel
intensities may be overdriven. This overdriving of one or more pixels may allow the pixel to reach
the target pixel intensity within the specified time period.

App. No. 20100087071 Assignee Apple Inc.
Title Electromagnetic connector for electronic device
Abstract An electrical plug and receptacle relying on magnetic force from an electromagnet to maintain
contact are disclosed. The plug and receptacle can be used as part of a power adapter for
connecting an electronic device, such as a laptop computer, to a power supply. The plug includes
electrical contacts, which are preferably biased toward corresponding contacts on the receptacle.
The plug and receptacle each have a magnetic element. The magnetic element on one of the
plug or receptacle can be a magnet or ferromagnetic material. The magnetic element on the
other of the plug or receptacle is an electromagnet. When the plug and receptacle are brought
into proximity, the magnetic attraction between the electromagnet magnet and its complement,
whether another magnet or a ferromagnetic material, maintains the contacts in an electrically
conductive relationship.

Title Reduced size multi-pin male plug connector
Abstract Receptacle connectors and male plug connectors having a reduced size in at least one direction
can be provided. One example reduces height by not including a center contact tab or tongue,
but instead places contacts on an insulator that is adjacent to a bottom portion of the receptacle.
Another example may reduce width by reducing contact pitch, and may use a particular shape
of contact to achieve god signal quality. Receptacle connectors and male plug connectors can
also provide support for one or more new high-speed communication standards, such as USB
3.0 and DisplayPort. Methods can provide one or more standardized connector components to
speed connector design and manufacture of new electronic devices such as media players, thus
reducing their time to market.

H02J 07/00: Circuit arrangements or systems for supplying or distributing

electric power Ü Circuit arrangements for charging or depolarising batteries
or for supplying loads from batteries
App. No. 20100085011 Assignee APPLE INC.
Title Methods and apparatus for charging a battery in a peripheral device
Abstract A power manager for managing power delivered to a battery operated peripheral device is
disclosed. The power manager includes an input current limiter arranged to suppress a power
surge associated with an insertion event by a power cable arranged to provide an external voltage.
A voltage converter unit coupled to the input current limiter converts the received external voltage
to a supply voltage that is transmitted by way of a main bus to a voltage sensor unit coupled
thereto. During the insertion event, a comparator unit coupled to the voltage sensor, sends a first
switching signal to a switchover circuit that responds by connecting the peripheral device and an
uncharged battery to the main bus such that the supply voltage is provided thereto. When the
battery is substantially fully charged, the switchover circuit responds by electrically disconnecting
the battery so as to not overcharge the battery.

App. No. 20100086063 Assignee APPLE INC.
Title Quality metrics for coded video using just noticeable difference models
Abstract Systems and methods for applying a new quality metric for coding video are provided. The
metric, based on the Just Noticeable Difference (JND) distortion visibility model, allows for efficient
selection of coding techniques that limit perceptible distortion in the video while still taking into
account parameters, such as desired bit rate, that can enhance system performance. Additionally,
the unique aspects of each input type, system and display may be considered. Allowing for
a programmable minimum viewing distance (MVD) parameter also ensures that the perceptible
distortion will not be noticeable at the specified MVD, even though the perceptible distortion may
be significant at an alternate distance.
