Dear Parishioners,

FOURTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

Our first reading today tells of Jeremiah. He is young, as were

other prophets called to speak Gods word. He is to speak to the most powerful in the land.
He is not guaranteed success. All he knows is that God promises to be with him.
This reading from Corinthians is a hymn to LOVE. Even if we have all the gifts Paul has
spoken of in last weeks reading, but speak without love it will do no good whatever! The
qualities of love are the test of any Christian. St Paul speaks of love as, patience, kindness,
gentleness etc., but all are summed up in love love of God and love of neighbour.
St Lukes Gospel continues into telling of the second part of Jesus visit to Nazareth.
When Jesus read the passage from Isaiah: The spirit of the Lord is up me, I have come to
bring good news to the poor etc., all were in admiration of him. But then things began to
turn sour and hostile when he claimed to be the Chosen One of God. Who does he think he
is? And they would not accept him. Further, they want to get rid of him by throwing him
down the cliff at the towns edge!
They do not want to accept the truth. They close their minds to whom Jesus is their
Lord and Saviour.
How terrible, we might say! But how often are we very selective in accepting Gods
word and his Word to us a Word which is challenging us to change to re-direct our
attitudes to grown in knowledge this is why we need to examine our conscience, and be
ready to grow in the knowledge of God.
JUSTICE AND PEACE OPEN EVENING: We had a magnificent gathering last
Wednesday evening in our Parish Hall. People who are involved in areas of Justice and
Peace all over the Westminster Diocese came to share their experiences and work with
others. It is remarkable the amount of Christian witness given in response to the needs of
other people in their own parishes and beyond. THANKS to all our parishioners from St
John Vianney who participated in the evening.
In the second part of the session, Danny Curtin led a process which allowed
participants to explain their activities and share a vision for that is needed for the work of
Justice and Peace to grow in the Diocese. Bishop Nicholas Hudson, Auxiliary Bishop,
participated and addressed the assembly with words of encouragement. The evening gave a
clear indication of what is needed in order that the work of Justice and Peace continues to
be at the center of diocesan structures. Renewed thanks to all concerned.
Have a wonderful week.

Fr Joe
