WIDGET DESIGN

Widget design
Product overview and use
Marmite is a nationally popular and patriotic food
brand owned by the global brand Unilever; its
popularity driven by the famous slogan you either
love it or hate it.
My widget design addresses the problem, which
committed marmite users will be familar with. This
is struggling to get the last Marmite out of the top
of the jar with a regular knife, due to the shape of
the jar.
The widget screws into the Marmite lid, which acts
as the widget handle. This contributes to the
positive user experience associated with Marmite.
While holding on to the lid, the widget is used to
achive the last amount of marmite on all sides of
the jar.

Distribution
The widget will be distributed by Unilever (owners of
Marmite) and intended to be given away as a free
gift with popular food magazines or with special
marmite multi-packs. It will be distributed in the
way shown in the image to the left.

The widget parts are removed from the packaging and the
scraper is clipped to the thread piece inside. Once assembled, the widget is screwed into the internal thread of the
Marmite jar lid.

The widget is now fully assembled and ready to be used.

The widget can be used to access Marmite in all edges of the jar. As shown in the image above, the
scraper is designed with both sides to be flush with the surfaces of the jar so all marmite can be
retrieved.

WIDGET MANUFACTURE

Mould design
The widget mould design we decided to
manufacture as a team was a promotional Colgate toothbrush holder and toothpaste despenser.
The widget will be packaged with special Colgate
toothpaste multi-packs.

Manufacture
The mould tool has been designed to mould the
product from 25.11g of polymer. We chose to use
LDPE with a fill time of 3.52 seconds (excluding
manual work).

Sustainability
As part of our sustainability plan, we aim to use a
melt reprocessing technique for any waste LDPE,
such as spew gates etc and use them for future
injections.

WIDGET MANUFACTURE

Group Manufacture
In a group of six, we had to select one of our widget
mould tool designs to manufacture. Due to good
time economy and insert designs, which offered
flexible manufacturing capabilities, we decided to
go with the promotional Colgate toothpaste holder
and dispenser.
Because the design was dual shot, we had to
overcome a few challenges. Because the second
shot required inserts in the mould cavity to be
replaced, we had to balance our time effectively to
manufacture a high quantity of inserts in a
relatively short amount of time.
The mould design comprised of two CNC
manufactured mould halves with fourteen cavity
inserts, two of which were manually formed on the
milling machines and centre lathes.

Smell fresh, look good

A re-design of an existing hair

volumising styler, targeted at young
athletic and appearance conscious men

Ergonomics
The product
The product to be re-designed is a Mark Hill Salon
professional air volumising styler.
Its targeted between the ages of approximately
16-35 years and is aimed at a modern, glamour
lifestyle , specifically designed to improve one;s
looks.
Below, I have visually recorded a user interacting
with the Mark Hill product and noted down areas,
which may be causing difficulty or inconvenience.

Product analysis

AirVibe
The Air Vibe is a much more practical and efficient
way of both drying and styling ones hair and can be
carried out in one process, rather than being in
seperate stages using various hair products and
various actions.
The unique function of the Air Vibe is that a scent is
produced when a circular button is pressed.
This comes from a replacable disc, which can filled
with a masculine odour, which easily slides in the slot
of the device. The hot air from the device then
diffuses the scent evenly through the individuals hair.

DAB
Re-deSIGn

A re-design of the traditional DAB

radio, following a future-organic form
direction.

The brief
A major manufacturer of electronic goods is
looking to launch a new brand, initially through
the manufacture of DAB radios. Their aim is to sell
products at the higher end of the market and no
association is to be made to their previous range
of products or brand identity.
Design a DAB radio that provides a more
interesting and original aesthetic than current
DAB offerings. The image portrayed by the
product should be congruent with the higher end
of the home audio market, however you need to
break new ground and create something
innovative.
The materials and surface treatments employed
should reflect the future organic form direction.

The vents ensure heat produced by internal
electronic components can escape, preventing the
external casing over-heating.
The vents have been designed with a future organic
element on a protruding external surface, enhancing
aesthetic features of the product casing.

2
The circular DAB on the side of the radio features a
touch sensor, which allows the user to vary the
volume output by simply pinching their finger and
thumb inwards to reduce the volume or pushing their
finger and thumb outwards to increase the volume.

3
The dashboard features an on/off and select button,
a pause and resume button (on the right side) and a
centre scrolling wheel to change radio station.

Childrens self-branded sauce bottle with

a removable flying saucer toy and an
alternative dispensing mechanism to
generic sqeezable sauce bottles.

SAUCE R

The alien sticker gives the impression they are

inside the UFO toy. The same sticker is applied to
the opposite side of the saucer.

The logo displays the brand name and graphics,

as well as the type of sauce. The sticker on the
opposite side of the bottle has the same
silhouette but displays the list of
ingredients inside the sauce.

The body of the bottle has been sculptured to

look like a UFO, projecting a beam of light
downwards.

SAUCE R

Fixed Servings
By pushing down on the UFO part at the top of the
bottle, a plunger screwed on to the UFO is pushed
down, which traps sauce inside the plunger head.
Pressure builds up, which forces sauce out of the cap
at the bottom.
The bottle will be promoted as one pump equalling
one serve, meaning one full pump on the UFO is
equivalent to a
recommended serving of sauce for a childs meal. This
is to prevent children sqeezing an unhealthy quantity
of sauce on to their meal. The idea of pushing the
UFO to dispense sauce also provides a fun experience
for children during meal time.
Alternatively, the bottle can be squeezed to dispense
sauce like a generic sauce bottle.

Storyboard
The images below display the sequence of events,
which are followed when using the product. This
includes events both from its use as a sauce
container and dispenser and from its use as a childs
toy, once empty.

Air tight seals (to keep the sauce fresh) are

removed before use.

The sauce can be dispensed two ways. By

either pushing the UFO down to pump the
sauce out or squeezing the container

After all the sauce has been used, the

sauce bottle is washed out and all
plastic components are dissambled
and recycled.

The UFO cap can be given to a

child as a toy, therefore prolonging the use of part of the bottle.

SAUCE R

Internal ribs
support the
structure of the cap
and reduce the
quantity of plastic.

The plastic components that

form the UFO cap are injection
moulded Polypropylene, 1mm
thick. The tubing on the spring
is 0.5mm thick.

Silicon material, held

between the bottom
of the UFO part and
the top of the PET
bottle, prevents the
sauce entering the
inside of the UFO.
The plunger is
attached to the UFO
by simply pushing it
on and pulling it off
after use. Because of
the low tolerence
between the parts,
the plunger stays well

No adhesives are required for

any parts of the bottle or cap.
Parts on the cap are slotted
together and, due to the low
tolerence between the parts,

Blow moulded 1.5mm

thick PET bottle.

The sectioned view splits the bottle directly in

half and shows how all the parts are connected
to each other.
In addition, it displays the internal partsand
gives a better understanding of how the product operates.

As shown clearly in the sectional view, when the

user pushes down on the UFO cap at the top of
the bottle, the internal spring compresses,
allowing the UFO cap with the attached plunger
to move downwards. When the plunger moves
down, sauce gets trapped in the plunger head,
which provides enough pressure to force a fixed
amount of sauce out the cap at the bottom.

The plunger is 1mm thick

Polypropylene. The
plunger tubing is 0.3mm
thick.

When pushed down, the

plunger traps sauce inside.
The trapped sauce provides
enough pressure to force a
fixed amount of sauce out
the cap at the bottom.
The flip top cap is screwed
on to the bottom of the
bottle. The silicon valve is
secure in the cap, held by
another plastic component
fitted in the cap.

Injection moulded 1mm

thick ABS ensures the
bottle remains stable.

Research

Problem
Community projects are generally elongated
affairs, with council agreement to fund
projects often difficult to obtain, which is not
seen as benefitting everyone under their
jurisdiction. Even if funding is agreed, the
predicted start-date may be far into the
future.

ZONE

Persona
Martin lives with his wife Angela and two children, Peter and
Amy (aged 7 and 8 respectively). They live in a suburb of Nottingham,
which is a relatively poor area, with a fairly high crime rate.

Technology use
Martin himself owns a laptop and a iPhone
5s. He has installed many apps on his
phone, constantly keeping up with the news
via a news app.

Scenario

Name Martin Taylor

Age 34
Occupation Teacher

Charity work
He donates to national charities if he can
directly see the good consequences of his
donation. So, for example, he occasionally
donates to telethon charities.

As shown in a few photos below, using a card mockup of an iPhone 6, I produced my wireframe sketches on
card and cut them out to fit on to the phone model. By sliding each wireframe onto the screen in turn, my
user (Liz) acted out the app journey, while I explained the interface and controls.

Experience goals
Martin would like to feel in
control of the funding of
local projects in his
community, instead of
relying on the council

Martin sponsors a childs

education in India, but
otherwise doesnt donate
to international charities.
