The Roosevelt Island Bridge over the East River Channel

! COMMUNITY IMPACTS
• Contract work requiring a one-lane closure will continue
! between 9:15 a.m. and 3 p.m., when traffic volumes are at
their lowest.

• Closure of the Roosevelt Island Tram (March 1 through

August 31, 2010) coupled with the Roosevelt Island Bridge
serving as the only mode of land access to the island could
potentially create higher traffic volumes. Motorists should
plan accordingly.

• Periodic one-way only service of the NYCT “F” subway

PROJECT DESCRIPTION
The New York City Department of Transportation (NYCDOT)
Division of Bridges is currently reconstructing the Roosevelt
Island Bridge. Now in its final stage, the project is scheduled
to be completed in March 2011.
WORK IN PROGRESS
• Replacing all mechanical and electrical systems,
including the lights on the bridge and approaches.
• Installing stairway enclosures.
• Rehabilitating service roads on the Queens side of the
bridge.
WORK COMPLETED
• Replaced the entire roadway deck and approaches.
• Constructed a new turning lane from the bridge onto
Vernon Boulevard, southbound.

maintenance, may result in higher traffic volumes on the
bridge. Motorists should plan accordingly.
• Bridge testing which cannot be scheduled at any other
time will occur during the same time period (May-August) as
the Roosevelt Island Tram outage. Necessary steps will be
taken to minimize impacts on the traveling public.
• During the UN General Assembly, the west channel of
the river will be closed for security reasons. This will require
additional bridge openings to accommodate marine traffic.
Rules and regulations of the U.S. Coast Guard, require
marine traffic to have the right of way. Occasional delays are
expected for bridge traffic.
