As costs rise to get candidates
and recruiters on site for inter-
views, companies such as CDW
are turning to virtual recruiting
to help them identify candidates
for on-site interviews.
Phone interviews have tradi-
tionally played this role. But in
May 2008, CDW, a large reseller
of computer hardware and soft-
ware based in Vernon Hills, Ill.,
began a pilot program with Hire-
Vue, a company that specializes
in virtual interviewing.
Felicia McKinney, in charge of
college recruiting for CDW, said
there are logistical advantages for
both the candidate and recruiters
in webcam interviewing.
“It allows us to spread the net
wider,” she said. “We can reach
candidates even though we are
not on campus.”
McKinney added that the alter-
nate option allows for flexible
scheduling for both applicants
and recruiters.
Candidates receive a webcam
and instructions on how to log
into a Web site where the inter-
view will be saved, said McKin-
ney. They are asked 10 to 12 ques-
tions, given 30 seconds to think
of a response and 1:30 seconds to

wireless network with both au-
thentication and security built
into the wireless protocol.
With the old UIUCNet net-
work, students needed to log
in to QuickConnect or the VPN
each time they connected; but
with IllinoisNet - after students
complete their first connection -
the computer can automatically
reconnect whenever it detects a

Recently, a spam e-mail from
a University account was sent to
other students’ accounts.
The e-mail approaches the re-
ceiver as a friend that is travel-
ing abroad and was unfortunate
enough to be mugged. The send-
er requires financial help and re-
quests a reply to help ease his/
her depression and confusion.
E-mails such as this one have
been spammed to University ac-
counts before. According to the
CITES Help Desk, spam e-mails
must be forwarded to the Help
Desk’s e-mail (consult@illinois.
edu) for them to be stopped.

around campus, like the social

sor events with them to try to
build a larger consciousness.”

to organize people and speak

n Feb. 28 at 3 a.m., a male
victim was in a parking lot
near the corner of Third
and Gregory when he was at-
tacked. Both his cell phone and
money from his wallet were
stolen.
About two days after the at-
tack, a photo popped up on the
victim’s Facebook wall. It was
a photo of a man, believed to
be one of the men who attacked
him. The victim’s cell phone
was programmed to transfer
any new photos to his Facebook
page whenever it was plugged
into a computer.
Last week, Champaign police
released the photo, asking the
public for help in identifying
the man.
Victims of a mugging rare-
ly see their stolen items again,
but in this case, technology has
given police some unexpected
help.
There are steps you can ac-
tively take, should your laptop
or cell phone be stolen, to aid in
its recovery or the arrest of the
thieves. Those steps come in a
variety of options.
Campus Information Tech-
nology and Educational Ser-
vices, or CITES, offers a short
computer registration service
for students that aids in the re-
covery of missing computers.
Once you report your computer
as stolen, CITES security staff
will scan the network should
the thief decide to connect to
the UI network with your com-
puter.
CITES’ solution, however,
only works on campus. If the
thief takes your computer off
campus, you’re out of luck —
unless you have Absolute Soft-
ware’s LoJack for Laptops,
which is a subscription-based
software solution that allows
for your computer to be tracked
down whenever it connects to
the Internet. Should you report
it stolen, they will work with lo-
cal law enforcement to recover
your stolen property. They also
offer a data protection service
that erases all sensitive data
from your computer in the case
of theft.
A free and open source al-
ternative to LoJack is Prey.
According to their Web site,
“Prey helps you locate your
missing laptop by sending
timed reports with a bunch
of information of its where-
abouts. This includes the gen-
eral status of the computer...
and in case your laptop has an
integrated webcam — a picture
of the thief.”
There aren’t very many cell
phone tracking services out
there, but if you are an iPhone
user, you can sign up for Ap-
ple’s MobileMe service. It of-
fers you e-mail and data stor-
age services, but its most
notable feature is the “find my
iPhone” application. Should
you lose your iPhone, you can
track it down using its built-in
GPS, send your phone an an-
noying message with sound —
even if it has been set to silent
— to aid in its return, remote-
ly lock down your phone, and if
you’re paranoid or have sensi-
tive data stored there, remote-
ly wipe all data off of it. While
we don’t encourage you to be a
vigilante and track down your
stolen iPhone yourself, hand-

true, there are many other elements that
go into creating the wide varieties of
sushi that are available. The ingredients

sushi is healthy or not.
Sushi is a classic Japanese meal that

menus of Japanese restaurants. There
are three types of sushi including nigiri ,
sashimi and maki , said Dan Nguyen, one
of the sushi chefs at Kofusion. Nigiri is
used in making tofu, sashimi is a dish of
raw fi sh and maki are sushi rolls.
Kofusion, located in downtown Cham-
paign, serves 25 different rolls of sushi,
Nguyen said.
“Sushi rolls are generally our most
popular item and (we) sell more (sushi)
than anything else.”

After winning seven straight singles
matches, including 12 of his last 13, it
would be fair to say that junior Abe Sou-
za, ranked No. 76 in the nation, is hot. But
thanks to his laidback, relaxed attitude, it
would also be easy to say that he is one of
the coolest.
“In January, things sort of clicked, and
I was prepared really well,” Souza said.
“You have to stick to doing the right things
by working hard in practice and having a
good attitude. It starts there, and if you
do that, you’re going to be more relaxed
in matches.”
Souza’s consistent play has helped propel
the No. 17 Illinois men’s tennis team to its
14-8 overall record, including a 6-0 mark
in Big Ten play.
“He’s got great composure and kept him-
self together,” head coach Brad Dancer
said. “It’s allowed him to play pretty solid
and get some victories when he’s not play-
ing his best tennis, and that’s the sign of a
mature competitor.”
The St. Louis native is 19-2 in dual-sea-
son play, giving him five more wins than
he had in his fi rst two seasons combined.
During one stretch earlier this year, he had
a 10-match winning streak. He also holds a
record of 28-5 in the overall season, which
is five more wins than his previous career
high. And there are still four more matches
before postseason play begins.
Most recently, Souza helped the Illini
claim a 7-0 victory against then-No. 60
Iowa, with wins at both doubles and sin-
gles Sunday.
In the doubles match, he teamed up with
senior Marek Czerwinski at the No. 1 spot
to take on the Hawkeye’s Will Vasos and
Tommy McGeorge, 8-6.

Sullivan said. “She’s just got
a really strong mental side of
the game, she never gets too
high or too low with anything,

rific day for us and was hitting

match, 4-3, Souza defeated No.
50 Alex Musialek, 7-5, 6-1, at
No. 2 singles to boost his record
against ranked opponents to 5-3
on the year.
While his consistent play has
helped the Illini on the court,
it is his leadership on and off
it that has improved the team
the most.
“He’s a great person, every-
thing he does is professional and
he’s a joy to have on the team,”
Dancer said.
“I think both he and Marek
(Czerwinski) continue to lead
this team by tremendous
example.”
F reshman Stephen Hoh
said he has learned a lot from
Souza.
“He takes all of the freshmen
under his wing,” Hoh said.
“He’s always one to give
advice and he always leads by
example on the court. During
practice he gives 110 percent,
and during matches his intensi-
ty and focus is probably the best
on the team. I really look up to
his mental side on the court.”
With four regular-season
matches remaining, Souza has
one particular goal in mind.
“A Big Ten title — regular
season and tournament — has
to be up there,” he said.

Vivona, evaluated the goals of
the team.
“We all got together and decid-
ed we wanted to not embarrass
ourselves anymore,” Gonzalez
said. “We decided we wanted to
become a winning and competi-
tive club team.”
The team set out basic guide-
lines. They began requiring con-
sistent attendance and dedica-
tion to the team.
They made it a requirement
that players joined the team to
win, not just to have fun.
“We pretty much restarted the
entire club,” Novak said.
One of the first steps for the
team was to find a legitimate
coach.
“It may work for the men’s
club volleyball team to have a
player coach but not for us,” Gon-
zalez said.
“It’s a lot different with
girls.”
Novak held interviews for
coaches and decided on Kyle
Bent, a graduate student who
worked with intramurals for
campus recreation.
Bent had known the previous
president and was intrigued by
the women’s talent.
“I saw their potential and
wanted them to get to the best of
their ability,” Bent said. “There
was no reason they shouldn’t be
winning.”
“On the first day, I said, ‘I want
you guys to play to win, and if

you have blind faith, listen to
what I say,’” Bent added.
At tryouts, the team took only
11 women, who displayed the
right mentality.
The team took a more seri-
ous attitude and followed Bent’s
lead.
“We started practicing a lot
more, being a lot more intense
in practice and being a lot more
serious,” Novak said.
The new attitude paid off as
the team began to succeed, com-
piling a 23-8 record.
“We completely pulled togeth-
er. I thought it would take a lot
more rebuilding, but it didn’t,”
Novak said.
“Everyone just loved to
play and played to their full
potential.”
The time the team complete-
ly came together was at Miami
of Ohio, when it won four of five
games, losing in the semifinals.
There were only seven players,
but no one got in foul trouble,
and they all played a fluid game,
Gonzalez said.
“This is when we actually
clicked as a team,” Gonzalez
said. “Other teams actually start-
ed wanting to play us because we
weren’t a joke anymore.”
The team hit its high point
when it won at the SIUE quali-
fier against Northwestern.
For the first time in history, the
team advanced to the national
tournament in North Carolina.
They leave for competition
Thursday, April 29 and are
“ready to make a statement.”
