forthemandifitshiswill,hewouldgivethemtous.Sometimeswedon'tknowwhattoaskfor.Sometimesweask
forthewrongthings.OurchurchgaveusthesacramentssowecangetsomeofthegracesJesushastogivetohelpus
getstarted.Withthosegraces,wewillbesmarterandknowwhattoaskforlateron.Wewillstillmakemistakesbut
withtheGraceofGod,maybetheywontbeasbadorsomanyofthem.TherearesevensacramentstheChurchoffers
us.Someofthemweonlygetoncebutotherswecangetmanytimes.
TheSacramentofBaptism
Baptismistheveryfirstsacramentthatyoucanreceive.Thisiswhereitallstarts.Whenwearebaptized,webecome
childrenofGod,membersofthechurch,andaregiveneternallife.Apersonisonlybaptizedonce.Theword"baptize"
comesfromtheGreekword,baptizein,andmeansto"plunge"or"immerse."Apriest,aminister,oralaypersoncan
baptize.Whatyoudoistosay,"IbaptizeyouinthenameoftheFatherandoftheSonandoftheHolySpirit."Atthe
sametimepouringwateroverthepersonthatisbeingbaptized.Therearetwosymbolswithbaptism.Oneiswater,to
symbolizethewashingofsins,andthesecondislighttosymbolizeChristHimself.BaptismwashesawayOriginal
Sin.OriginalsinisthesinweinheritedfromAdamandEve.TheydisobeyedGodandtheirsinishandeddowntous.
TheSacramentofConfession
Thissacramenthasdifferentnames.Sometimesitscalled,theSacramentofPenanceandsometimesitscalled,the
SacramentofReconciliation.NoMatterwhichnameyouuse,itsallthesamesacrament.Thissacramentisconfessing
yoursinstoGod.Godknowswhatsinsyouhavecommittedandwillcommitbutwiththissacrament,youareawareof
thosesins.Whenwegotoconfession,wereceivegracesfromGodtomakeiteasiernottosinagain.Weshould
receivethissacramentasoftenaspossible.
TheSacramentofConfirmation
TheSacramentofConfirmationiswhentheHolySpiritcomestoyouinaspecialwaymakingyoustronginfaith.
ThosewhoreceivedthisSacrament,bythepoweroftheHolySpirit,growinfaithandarereadyforadultChristianlife.
TheBishopconfirmsus.Heplaceshishandsonus,prays,andblessesuswithHolyOilcalledchrism.TheHolySpirit
hasgiftstogiveus.Theyare:1.Wisdom2.Understanding3.Counsel4.Fortitude5.Knowledge6.Piety.Itisuptous
torecognizeandusethesegiftseveryday.
TheSacramentofTheHolyEucharist
TheSacramentoftheHolyEucharistiswhenJesusiswithusinthebreadandwine.Throughprayers,byaskingthe
HolySprittocomeuponthegifts,(thebreadandwine),thebreadandwinebecometheBodyandBloodofJesus.Only
apriestcandothis.WebelievethatGodisintheEucharisticbreadandwinesotheyshouldbeadoredandhonored.
Christispresentinboththebreadandwine,sowedon'thavetohaveboth.Usuallywereceivethebread.Weshould
receivethissacramentdaily.
TheSacramentofHolyMatrimony
ThesacramentofHolyMatrimonyiswhenamanawomangetmarried.TheymakepromisestoeachotherandtoGod
tolivetogetherhelpingeachotheringoodtimesandbadtimes,inhealthandinsickness,forever.Thesacramentof
marriagegivesgracetothemanandwomansotheycanlivetogether,supporteachotherandraisetheirchildren.
TheSacramentofHolyOrders
TheSacramentofHolyOrders,alsocalledtheSacramentofOrdination,isformentobecomepriests.JesusattheLast
Suppergavethissacramenttous.Thefirstmenwhoreceivedthepowerofpriesthoodweretheapostles.Theapostles
passedonthatgifttous.Amanthatwantstobeapriesthastogotoschoolformanyyears.Afterthatisdone,hehasa
ceremonywhereheisordainedandhebecomesapriest.Apriestisgivenspecialpowersthroughordination.Hethen
cangiveusallthesacraments.PriestsarecalledinaspecialwaytohelpusandtopreachtheWordofGod.
TheSacramentofAnointingoftheSick
ThesacramentofAnointingoftheSick,alsocalledExtremeUnction,iswhenapriestpraysandblessesyouwithHoly
Oilwhenyouareindangerofdying.Thesacramentgivesyouaspecialgraceandstrength.Ifyouareconscious,you
shouldmakeaconfessionbeforedeath.Ifyouaren'tconscious,thissacramentwillgainpardonforyou.Youcan
receivethissacramentmorethanonce.
