Director
Central London, £43,000 - £47,000 per annum

The Campaign for Science and Engineering (CaSE) has an exciting opportunity for a
dynamic, articulate, and highly motivated individual to lead the organisation. CaSE
works to ensure that science and engineering are high on the political agenda.
CaSE’s mission is to make sure that government policies and funding ensure that the
UK has worldleading research and education, skilled scientists and engineers, and
successful innovative business.

As Director of CaSE, you would engage with high-level decision makers and opinion
formers across a range of sectors including Government Ministers, parliamentarians,
civil servants, journalists and our members from industry, universities, research
charities, and learned societies. In addition, you would be responsible for running a
small organisation.

Key responsibilities:
• To develop CaSE’s positions on science and engineering policies and advocate
them to decision-makers.
• To represent CaSE to the media, government, parliament, members and other
relevant groups.
• To raise funds through membership, sponsorship and donations in collaboration
with the Membership Officer.
• To oversee and conduct the financial management of the organisation.
• To line-manage and supervise all staff members.
• To support the Executive Committee and Advisory Council.

The ideal candidate will have:

• Strategic vision about the role of CaSE in shaping science and engineering policy
across the UK and the management skills to achieve this.
• Experience in one or more policy areas that we work on: research funding,
education and skills, innovation, and science and engineering in government.
• Experience engaging politicians and/or the media.
• Ability to engage with senior people within government, industry and academia.
• Excellent presentation and communication skills.
• A background in science, technology, engineering, or mathematics is highly
desirable.

Full details of CaSE’s work and CaSE’s five year strategy can be found at:
http://www.sciencecampaign.org.uk.

The Director is responsible for running a small organisation. As well as the Director,
CaSE has an Assistant Director (0.7FTE), a Membership Officer (0.4 FTE) and a
Research and Administrative Assistant. The Director needs to manage accounts and
payments and have long-term consideration of the organisation and its work. There
is limited scope for flexible working and the Director will occasionally need to work in
the evenings and travel.

For further details, please contact the Chair of CaSE’s Executive Committee,
Professor Hugh Griffiths, on 07814 217636. To apply, please email your curriculum
vitae together with a covering letter explaining your suitability for the position to Dr
Hilary Leevers, hilary@sciencecampaign.org.uk. Please include a one page briefing
for the next Science Minister which you are prepared to discuss if you are invited to
interview. You will receive an acknowledgement of your application.

Deadline for applications is 18th April 2010. Interviews will be held on Thursday 29th
April.
