Pence Hall Addition

04.23.15

The goal for the Pence Hall Addition project is expanding and encapsulating the building
to provide a new design, while respecting the original design of Pence Hall. The new
design will allow students and faculty of the College of Design to collaborate together in
one building, and will unclude more studio space, public space, new library, new confrence
rooms, and a new lecture hall.
The new addition will provide a connection between not just other students and faculty
within the college of design, but also with the students of UK. Other students will be able
to feel that this building is not just for the College of Design, but for the entire campus
and will allow everyone to explore what the College of Design is about.

The Seaport Energy Tower is located in the Seaport District of Boston, Mass. and is adjacent
to the Boston Museum of Contemporary Art. The Tower is 336 tall with 26 oors of oce
space, galleries, restaurant, research labs, lecture halls, and a lobby space. The main concept
behind the tower is renewable energy. The tower generates energy through biomass, biogasication, and wind energy in order to lower energy costs and increase eciency.

acts as a pipe organ, one steps on
the key pad that opens up a trap
door. THis causes the air reservior to
push high air pressure upward and
creates a sound similar to a pipe
organ.

Subtract

Thomas Kirk | 13.15.12

The stucture bends the solid form which creates the illusion of
seperate sections. I began with a solid and subtracted surfaces
throughout the pavillion using modeling programs. This
simultaneously enables the ow of air and light throughout the
structure. The openings at the top allow opportunity for the bright
Kentucky sun to pass through, creating a sidewalk pattern using
natural light and each opening forms a contrast form the shadow
and sections of light.

Salk Center Housing

04.14.13

The Salk Center Housing project is proposed on the San Diego coast for
the scientists and visitors of the Salk Center which is located just east of
the proposed Salk Center Housing. Each unit consits of 12 two bedroom
units and 1 one bedroom units. Each units includes a half bathroom on the
rst oor, a spacious kitchen, a double heighted living room, a rooftop
garden, and a spectacular view of the Pacic Ocean. The Salk Center was
used as a reference for the procession and design, which includes precast
concrete, metal mullions, and wooden doors and oors. The processional
view starts on the east side of the project and opens out to the ocean.

AGGR EGATION DIAGRAM

The Top 24 units are 2 bedrooms and the bottom 24 units are 1
bedroom. The keyhole shape that is included in the wall, the pool,
and the pavilion derives from the geometric designs of Louis
Khan as he designed the Salk Center Institute.

Abstract + Skin

12.15.12

This model represents an abstract and organic design

that creates form, volume, and movement. The white
mesh provides a textured contrast to the white geometric chipboard illustrating a way for a building to meet the
landscape. The design also forms a solid and void which
creates an abstract space that provides the opportunity
for further design to allow additional inhabitation

First year

In this series of works, the rigid geometry

and absract forms are being used as
extensions of the models. Like a tail
functions to balance an animal, the
extensions act to balance the design and
also to lead the eye around the model. The
models on the far left were designed to act
as a second skin; our mission for this
project was to develop a design that would
encase our bodies comfortably while
maintaining achiseled, inflexible form.

This design is a proposal for The North Upper

ce
Building. I chose a location on the corner of North Upper
and Mechanic Street for a cornerlot structure that serves as
a building for any type of company to work from. The
buildingwas inspried by a transforming grid that has
openings (marked by coral color) to give the o ce building
an outwardly public, but inwardly private feel. The building is
designed centrally around the lobby, extending outwardly to
confrence rooms, restrooms, lounges, and 21o ces.
