ANSWER ALL THE QUESTIONS (4 X 10 = 40 Marks)

1. Discuss the effects of various parameters on the thermal conductivity of solids.


OR
2. Derive expressions for temperature distribution , under one dimensional steady state heat
conduction, for the following systems. A. Composite Wall B. Composite Cylinder.
3. A furnace is constructed with 225 mm thick of fire brick ( k = 1.4 W/mK) , 120 mm of
insulating brick ( k = 0.2 W/mK) and 225 mm of building brick ( k = 0.7 W.m K ). The inside
temperature is 1200 K and the outside temperature is 300 K. Find the heat loss per unit area
and the temperature of the junction of the fire brick and insulating brick.

4. An exterior wall of a house may be approximated by a 0.1 m layer of common brick ( k = 0.7
W/moC ) followed by a 0.04m layer of gypsum plaster ( k = 0.48 W/m oC) . What thickness of
loosely packed rock wool insulation ( k = 0.065 W/m oC ) should be added to reduce the heat
loss or gain through the wall by 80 percent.
5. A steam pipe( K = 45 W/moC) having 70mm inside diameter and 85mm outside diameter is
lagged with two insulation layers; the layer in contact with the pipe is 35mm asbestos
( k=0.15 W/moC) and is covered with 25mm thick magnesia insulation ( k = 0.075 W/m oC ).
The heat transfer coefficients from the inside and outside surfaces are 220 W/m 2C and 6.5
W/m2C respectively. If the temperature of steam is 350 o C and the ambient temperature is 30 o
C, calculate i) The steady loss of heat for 50mm length of pipe and ii) the overall heat transfer
coefficients based on inside and outside surfaces of the lagged steam main.

6. A steel rod type fin ( k = 32 W/m oC), 12 mm in diameter and 60mm long, with an insulated
end is to be used a pin type fin. It is exposed to surroundings with a temperature of 60 oC and a
heat transfer coefficient of 55 W/m 2C. The temperature at the base of the fin is 95 oC.
Determine i) the fin efficiency, ii) the temperature at the end of the fin, iii) the heat
dissipation.
7. Explain the Mechanism of Boiling heat transfer with neat sketch.

Water is to be boiled at atmospheric pressure in a polished copper pan by means of an


Electric heater. The diameter of the pan is 0.38m and is kept at 115C.Calculate the following
1. Power required to boil the water.2. Rate of evaporation, 3. Critical heat flux

3. A vertical tube of 65mm outside diameter and 1.5m long is exposed to steam at atmospherics
pressure. The outer surface of the tube is maintained at a temperature of 60C by circulating
cold water through the tube. Calculate the following 1. The rate of heat transfer to the coolant.,
2. The rate of condensation of steam.

emission is maximum and the corresponding emissive power. (iii) Total emissive
power.

8. Alloy steel ball of 1.5cm diameter heated to 700C and quenched in a bath at 100C.
The material properties of the ball are thermal conductivity K = 200 KJ/mhrC,
density = 7865kg/m, thermal diffusivity = 0.06m/h, specific heat Cp =
0.45KJ/kgC, convective heat transfer co-efficient h =140KJ/hr mC. Determine the
temperature of the ball after 10 seconds.
