UNIT I
1.

2.

Derive an expression for calculating power consumption in agitating Newtonian fluid

by using dimensional analysis and state physical significance of each dimensionless
number obtained in above expression.
[12M]
(OR)
a) Compare the performance, characteristics and applications of paddle, turbine and
propeller type mixers.
[6M]
b) Suggest with reasons, suitable mixing equipment for mixing of dry powder.
[6M]

UNIT II
3.

Discuss about apron conveyers and bucket elevators with neat diagram.

[12M]

4.

(OR)
Discuss pneumatic conveying system and auxiliary equipment.

[12M]

UNIT III
5.

6.

What are the various types of crushers? Give some type of crusher and explain any one
of them with neat diagram.
[12M]
(OR)
a) A pair of rolls is to take a feed equivalent to spheres of 3 cm in diameter and crush
them to spheres having 1 cm diameter. If the coefficient of friction is 0.29, what would
be the diameter of rolls?
[6M]
b) In a ball mill of diameter 2000 mm, 100 mm dia steel balls are being used for grinding.
Presently, for the material being ground, the mill is run at 15 rpm. At what speed will the
mill have to be run if the 100 mm balls are replaced by 50 mm balls, all the other conditions
remaining the same?
[6M]

UNIT IV
7.

8.

a) With a neat sketch explain the working of a plate and frame filter press.
[6M]
b) Discuss the basic principles of centrifugal filtration.
[6M]
(OR)
a) Derive an expression for determining the specific resistance of the cake during
filtration.

Regulation : 10

Code No: CH204

b) A filtration is carried out for 10 min at a constant rate in a leaf filter and thereafter it
is continued at constant pressure. This pressure is that attained at the end of the constant
rate period. If one quarter of the total volume of the filtrate is collected during the
constant rate period, what is the total filtration time? Assume that the cake is
incompressible and the filter medium resistance is negligible.

10.

Explain i) classification of crystallizers ii) Tank crystallizer and vacuum crystallizer.

[12M]
(OR)
In a mixture of quartz (sp.gr = 2.65) and galena (sp.gr = 7.5), the size of the particles
range from 0.0002 cm to 0.001 cm. On separation in a hydraulic classifier using water
under free settling conditions, what are the size ranges of quartz and galena in the pure
products? (Viscosity of water = 0.001 kg/m.s; density = 1000 kg/m3).
[12M]
Data:
Density of quartz( sa) = 2650 kg/m3
Density of galena( sb) = 7500 kg/m3
Particle size range(Dmin to Dmax): 0.0002 cm to 0.001 cm
Viscosity of water() = 0.001 kg/m.sec
Density of water( ) = 1000 kg/m3
