Out of Class Speech Critique
Speaker
The speech presented was a communication analysis of the over-sexualization of women
in breast cancer awareness campaigns. The speaker that presented the speech was
Caterina Grossi of the Modesto Junior College Speech and Debate team. The purpose of the
speech was to examine the over-sexualization of women in breast cancer awareness campaigns.
The speech was held at the east campus performing arts centers main auditorium. The audience
consisted of MJC students.
Organizational Factors
The type of organizational pattern that was used in this speech was the topical pattern
because there were many subtopics to support the main points. The first main point of the speech
was an introduction into what the save the women campaign is. The supporting details was
images used in the campaign, and an overview of what the campaign entails. The second main
point was issues with the campaign. The supporting detail of this point was an analysis of the
images used in the campaign and the campaign itself. The third main point was that the save the
women campaign is effective as a counter-narrative. The supporting details for this main point
was an examination of the positive aspects of the campaign. Full transitions were used

throughout the speech. The connective transitions were very effective and helped the speech
greatly.
Supporting Materials
The speaker made effective use of supporting materials in the speech. Images used in the
save the women campaign are the most effective supporting material that the speaker has used.
These images are used throughout all the main points in different manners. In one main point, the
positives of the images are examined, and in another the negative aspects of the images are
analyzed. The speaker also makes use of articles and information quoted and cited in all main
points. The speaker makes excellent use of all of the supporting materials and would be hard
pressed to locate an area that could be improved.
Style
The speaker explained the terms of narrative and counter-narrative well, this was
especially helpful. The speakers style was eloquent and informative. The speaker seemed to be
very knowledgeable and passionate about their subject. The speakers language was vivid, but
their word choice could have been more varied. The language used in the speech was very
appropriate for the audience and venue of the speech. It was easy to understand and explained
the topic in a proper manner.
Delivery
The speakers voice had a conversational and informative tone appropriate for the speech.
The speaker used many nonverbal hand gestures. These gestures were effective at providing
emphasis on certain points and lending clarity to aspects of the speech. I felt that all of the
nonverbal gestures were effective. Hand movements are effective at helping a speaker appear

more personable and relatable. The speaker had a very effective vocal variation. There was great
variation in the inflection of her voice, and vocal emphasis was placed effectively on different
points of the speech. The speakers posture, facial expressions, and eye contact were very
effective. The speaker could improve her movement. As when moving through her speakers
triangle, she would sometimes face away from the audience, and break all eye contact. The eye
contact while stationary was abundant and quite effective.
Credibility
The speaker seemed to have a high level of connection with the subject. The speaker was
obviously passionate about the subject and felt that the information that she was presenting was
extremely important. I received the impression that she was very knowledgeable about this
subject and had done adequate effective research. The speech was well organized and presented
the information from multiple views, which lent credibility to the information. The speakers
clothing choice was appropriate and professional, which helped their credibility to some degree.
Overall Quality
I learned much about public speaking
