Inside a DELL D610 baery

:: connector, pinout and

signal timing

To learn a lile bit more about the DELL D5xx and D6xx baery range, here you nd a few
bits and pieces about its internals. Its a rst aempt with still many question unanswered.
Anyone who likes to comment or make a suggestion, drop a note at the contact section.
One of the questions to be answered by this aempt; Is the voltage to charge the baery
available - unconditionally - once the baery is plugged in? If so, theres a chance to charge
the baery unconditionally.
Reason for this aempt are widespread problems with the charging circuitry in a range of
DELL laptops, covered here:
AC Adapter ID chip failure (hp://www.laptop-junction.com/toast/content/dell-ac-poweradapter-id-chip-died) - DELL charging circuitry and the Maxim DS2501 memory chip
AC Adapter plug soldering (hp://www.laptop-junction.com/toast/content/dell-ac-poweradapter-power-plug) - Soldering inside a DELL DC plug
So lets have a look if theres a possibility to charge a DELL baery in a DELL Laptop when
the ID chip in the AC Adapter is dead.

DELL D500 / D600 baery measurement ingredients

Ingredients for this aempt to gure out DELL baery operations are:
Operational D610 laptop
Dead (empty) DELL D500 / D600 baery (case removed)
DELL AC Adapter with dead DS2501 identication chip
DELL AC Adapter with working DS2501 identication chip
First the baery connector of the DELL baery was de-soldered. Next the connector was
connected to the baery charger PCB using a 1 meter wire to be able to measure signals
during operations.
For those who want to know how to crack the baery casing, read more about that here.

Unfortunately, 2 cells of the

baery were completely dead
holding only a few millivolts. (In
the picture the le= 2) The rest of
the 4 baeries all had about 1 volt
le=.
The baeries are congured in 3
sets of 2 cells in parallel. With a
full charge this makes about 11
volts in total.
The transparent connection block
is used to measure signals using a Fluke ScopeMeter.
Next the baery was connected to the laptop (powered o) and then the working DELL AC
adapter was connected.
The charger circuitry works with the laptop in the powered-o state. In this conguration
the signal levels where measured at the wires between connector and baery PCB.

DELL D500 / D600 baery pinout

Now during measurements the following DELL Baery pinout was discovered - leaving 2
unknown pins of the 9 available.

Signals at Pin 3 and 6 could not be

determined in this test setup. Voltage
levels were close to zero during
measurement aempts. Looking at the
PCB, it clearly shows that pin 3 and 6
have circuitry connected. (the 4 SMD
resistors in a row)

The signals measured during this aempt:

5 seconds a=er the AC adapter is connected, the laptop switches 9 volts on V+. Why this is 9
volts and not 11 or higher is unknown. During 60 seconds +9 volts stays, the green charge
LED on the laptop switches on - but ashes then turning into the red ashing light
indicating the baery is failing. The DATA line has constant communication going during the
60 seconds - probably its a Maxim 1-wire communication signal . The ON/OFF line
switches ON/OFF as shown - its function remains unknown.

When the AC charger with the dead Dallas/Maxim DS2501 ID chip is

connected - theres no voltage on the V+ pin of the baery. This answers
the question of this aempt. Once the ID chip of the AC adapter is dead,
baery charging voltage does not appear at the V+ pin of the baery.
Most likely the unknown pins 3 and 6 carry a signal when the laptop is
powered-on. While the question was altready answered, the measurement
aempt is stopped here.
