to Dr Hafez, who is a well- known archaeologist. He used to tell her and her family about the
work he was doing as he was her father's friend. Sometimes Dr Hafez would show them
pictures of things he had found .Things that were thousands of years old . Leila decided to
follow his footsteps

Mr.Mahmoud Fathy ‫ محمود فتحى‬/‫أ‬
Dr Hafez
a A well-known archaeologist;
He was an old friend of Leila's family. He was doing excavation high up in the Andes
mountains . He used to tell Leila about the work and showed her family pictures of things he
had found . So, Leila decided to follow his footsteps .

His wise policy ;
When Leila told him about Amalia's unfriendly feelings towards her, he advised her to make
friends with Amalia as they were of the same age and they were both archaeologists . He
trusted Amalia and couldn't believe that Amalia would do anything wrong . He brought Leila
to Peru and made her in charge of a team because she was an experienced archaeologist and
her previous experience would be useful there .

hard working member of the excavation Amalia didn't seem to be friendly to Leila . She felt
jealous of her. She thought Dr Hafez brought Leila to Peru just because he was a family friend
. Amalia was working under the supervision of Leila .
A wicked deed :
Amalia plotted against Leila out of jealousy. She put a gold rabbit among Leila's work clothes
to be suspected by the police. However, she went to the police and cleared Leila . She
justified her wicked deed saying :
1-Leila was in charge of the excavating team and she wanted to be in charge.
2-Leila discovered the gold mask and she would get all the credit.
once more:
They became true friends as they arranged to catch Martin .On their way to Acomayo, their
car crashed and they had an accident. Amalia was badly injured yet, she had the toughness of

other interesting things to find rather than copper silver. He worked all over Peru. He was
based in the U.S.A., but he spent a few months every year in Peru . He had an American
passport , but he was born in south Africa .
Athief:
Mr.Mahmoud Fathy ‫ محمود فتحى‬/‫أ‬
He turned to be one of the thieves who found gold and silver things and took them out of the
country . He helped people to steal things from excavations .

Martin was a wicked man and swindler :

He used to work as a mining engineer. He worked with Amalia's father and persuaded him to
put up some of his money for a new silver mine, but it wasn't true. There was no mine and
Amalia's father lost all his money.
Martin was a liar :
He said he was working for United Mining in Peru . When Leila logged onto the internet , she
discovered that mining operations in Peru ended in 1999 .He was Amalia's friend and found
her a job in archeology . He lied to Amalia's father and caused him to be poor and lose all his
money.
His arrest;
He tried to steal some valuables from the tomb and tried to leave Peru , the police phoned
Immigration Department at the airport. They thought he had a false name and a false
passport , so it would be difficult to catch him .After stealing artefacts, he went to Acomayo,
there was another excavation taking place . In the end, he was arrested with
the help of Leila.
* * * *** * * ** * * * * * * * *******
Ramon

about anything .
Chapter 1 To the land of the Incas
I woke up this morning and I didn't know where I was. I lay on my bed for
a moment, thinking. After a few seconds, I remembered. Yes, I was back
home in Cairo with my parents and my sister, Samira. Outside I could
hear the familiar sounds of our neighbourhood -children playing in the
Mr.Mahmoud Fathy ‫ محمود فتحى‬/‫أ‬
street, the call of the man selling melons, the distant roar of traffic. I could
hear Samira doing something in the kitchen. She was probably making
coffee, l sighed. I wasn't in Peru any more. I was home. I looked around the
room. On the table beside my bed there was a photo. I picked it up. It was a
picture of me. I was looking at the camera and holding up a little gold
figure of an animal.
I lay back on the bed and looked at the photo again. I remembered that day
so well. That was a good day. Everything was going so well. Dr Hafez, the
leader of our excavation, was really excited.
Yes, that was a good day. But some of the days after that were not so good.
When I remembered them, I felt a shiver down my back. I closed my eyes.
Quickly I opened them again. Calm down, I told myself. It's all over now.
You're safe here in Cairo ...
Two months can seem a long time. Two months ago I was setting
off on the biggest adventure of my life. I was in our car with Samira. She
was taking me to the airport. As usual, the airport road was crowded.
Luckily we had set off early. We had plenty of time to reach the airport.
And Samira never stops talking. I listened to her and I wasn't worried
about the traffic jams. And I forgot how nervous I was about flying.
"You must be so excited to be going to Peru," Samira said.
"Yes, of course I'm excited," I said. "I've never been to South
America before. But to tell you the truth, I haven't really had
time to be excited. I spent most of last night packing my
luggage. Oh, I hope I haven't forgotten anything." "Don't worry,"
Samira said. "Everyone always forgets something. The last time I went
away, I forgot half my things. I couldn't understand why my luggage wasn't
heavier!"
laughed. Samira was so funny. You quickly forget you are nervous or
worried when you are with her. I'm her sister but I'm not at all like her. I
worry about everything.
"You must tell Dr. Hafez to take good care of you. I don't want you
falling off a mountain in the Andes," Samira went on. "His excavation
work is high up in the mountains, isn't it?"
"Yes," I said. "It's at about two and a half thousand metres. The Incas
lived at high altitudes. Machu Picchu is at three thousand metres and
Cuzco, their capital, is even higher. They were really tough, those Incas.
"It's amazing what they did. Did you know, they didn't have any
writing. And yet they controlled a huge empire!"
"But Dr Hafez is looking for a king's tomb, isn't he? You told me that."
"Yes, one of the Chimu kings. The Incas conquered the Chimu, who were
famous for their gold and silver work. Most Inca gold work was actually
made by the Chimu people. If we discover a king's tomb, it would be
Mr.Mahmoud Fathy ‫ محمود فتحى‬/‫أ‬
wonderful to find some of their work. Only kings and nobles had
things made of gold."
"How exciting," Samira said.
I am also taking Dr Hafez a small machine and details of a new technique
developed by the department of archaeology here in Cairo, I went on.
"'Researchers there have found new ways of discovering how old things
made of wood or cloth are. We're hoping to use it in our excavations
in Peru."
"Is that carbon-dating?"
"No, it uses a small laser to date things. It's the latest technology and
all very new - "
"And secret?"
I paused and thought for a moment. "Well, yes and no. Not many people
know about it, so, yes, it is sort of secret. And we want to be the first to use
it."
"SECRETS OF AN INCA TOMB. That would be a good title for an article
about your excavation, wouldn't it?"
I laughed. Samira is a reporter on one of the Cairo newspapers. She is
always looking for good articles for her paper.
"You must get lots of interesting stories," Samira went on. "You know -
EGYPTIAN ARCHAEOLOGIST FINDS INCA TREASURE - that sort of
thing. I can see the headlines now!"
I laughed again. Samira is wonderful, so full of enthusiasm.
The car behind us honked its horn. I looked up. The traffic lights had
turned to green. Samira looked in her mirror and drove off quickly. Soon
we were at the airport. I checked in for my flight. Samira hugged me and
kissed me on the cheek. She started to cry a little.
"You're going so far away," she sobbed.
"It's all right, Samira. I'm only going for a few weeks."
"I'll miss you, big sister," she said through her tears.
" I'll miss you too. I'm not very good at keeping in touch when I'm working.
But I'll send you a postcard - or maybe an e-mail!"

Chapter 2 The man on the plane

There isn't a direct flight to Lima, the capital of Peru, from Cairo. I had to
fly to New York and then change planes. It was a long flight and I read a
book at first, then I fell asleep. By the time we got to New York it was still
day time - New York is seven hours behind Cairo time. My connecting
flight was not until very early the next day. I stayed at a hotel at the airport.
Everything was so different from Cairo.
The next morning I boarded the plane to Lima at just after 6 a.m. I had
asked for a window seat. I was very nervous but I was curious at the same
time. As the plane took off from New York, I looked down on the city's
skyscrapers. The tall buildings shone in the early morning sunlight.
"Beautiful, isn't it?" the man sitting beside me said.
"Yes, it's amazing," I said.
"Was this your first visit to America?" he asked.
Mr.Mahmoud Fathy ‫ محمود فتحى‬/‫أ‬
'"Well, 1 only changed planes in New York. I arrived last night. So it can
hardly be called a visit. But, yes, it is."
I turned to look at him. I saw a man in his mid-thirties with fair hair and a
sun-tanned face. He was wearing a blue shirt and his sleeves were rolled
up. He didn't look like a businessman, but he didn't look like a tourist
either. I wondered what kind of work he did. It was difficult to say. He
looked as if he worked outdoors a lot.
"Are you going to Peru for a holiday?" he asked. "No, not really. It's a
business trip," I said. "Me too," he said. "I'm a mining engineer."
I had read a lot about Peru in the past few weeks and knew about Peru's
copper and silver mines.
"And what kind of mining are you doing in Peru?" I asked.
"Copper, silver?"
He smiled. "Oh, there are plenty of copper mines and silver mines
already in Peru," he replied. "I'm looking for places where there are
other interesting things to find."
I wondered what he meant by that. Perhaps he didn't want to say anything
definite about his work, but I was interested all the same. After all, mining
and archaeology have some things in common,
He had a strange accent. I thought he might be German. He wasn't
American, I was sure of that.
"Does your work take you all over Peru?" I asked him.
"That's right, I work all over the country. I'm based in the United States,
but 1 spend a few months every year in Peru."
"Are you American?"
"Well, I have an American passport," he said. "But I was born in South
Africa. How about you? You said you were going to Peru on business. Can 1
ask what kind of business?"
So I told him about the archaeological dig and that it was part of a
UNESCO exchange programme. When he heard I was an archaeologist, he
seemed quite interested in my work.
"Does this UNESCO programme mean Peruvian archaeologists are
working in Egypt?"
"Yes," I said. "It's an interesting idea, because there are some
similarities between the Ancient Egyptians and the ancient
peoples of South America."
"So you are from Egypt?"
"Yes. I am a research assistant at Cairo University."
"What made you take up archaeology?"
"Well, Dr Hafez, who is an old family friend, is a well-known archaeologist.
He was at school with my father. When I was young, I used to love
listening to Dr Hafez. He used to tell us about the work he was doing.
Mr.Mahmoud Fathy ‫ محمود فتحى‬/‫أ‬
Sometimes he would show us pictures of things he had found. Things that
were thousands of years old. It was so exciting, I decided I wanted to follow
in his footsteps."
"Did you study with him in Cairo?"
"No, I didn't think that would be a very good idea. People might
think he was giving me special treatment. He wouldn't do that, but you
know the way some people talk. In fact, I did my degree in Rome, at the
Italian Institute of Archaeology."
"Where did Dr Hafez work? Was it in Luxor?" "Yes, that's right," I replied.
"Was it in the Valley of the Kings?" the man asked.
"No, it was in the Valley of the Nobles," I replied. "We worked there
together. It was my first dig. We discovered a tomb which had
wonderful paintings of birds and animals on the walls. The colours were as
bright as if they had been painted yesterday They were amazing. And there
was some beautiful jewellery."
"Are you hoping to find tombs like that in Peru?" he asked.
I decided I didn't want to tell this man too much more. He spoke easily and
confidently. But he was asking a lot of questions. Maybe that is normal on
a plane, but I wasn't very comfortable. Luckily, the flight attendant came at
that moment with drinks and food. After that, I opened my briefcase and
got out some papers I was bringing from Cairo for Dr Hafez. I started to
read them. They were quite interesting, all about the latest developments
in archaeological research. When I had finished, I folded the papers up and
put them in the pocket in the seat in front of me.
After lunch they showed a movie, but I didn't watch it. I must have slept
through it. The cabin was still dark when I woke up. I stretched and turned
around in my seat. I half opened my eyes. I saw the man looking through
the pocket in the seat in front of me. I watched him for a few moments. He
seemed to be looking for something. I yawned and pretended to wake up.
"Sorry," he said. "Did I wake you? I was just looking for the in-
flight magazine. I couldn't find mine."
"Here, have mine," I said. He took the magazine and began to read it and I
closed my eyes. But I didn't sleep this time.
We didn't talk again until we were just coming in to land in Lima. I looked
out of the window. I was keen to get my first sight of Lima. But there was
thick cloud over the city.
"There's nearly always this thick cloud over Lima," the man said.
"Disappointing, isn't it?"
"Yes," I replied, "But I'm not staying in Lima. Dr Hafez is meeting me at
the airport and we're taking a flight to Cuzco."
"I see. So you'll be working in Cuzco?"
Mr.Mahmoud Fathy ‫ محمود فتحى‬/‫أ‬
"Yes, in the Cuzco area," I replied. I didn't want to tell him exactly where
Dr Hafez's excavations were taking place.
His eyes lit up. "In that case, I might see you again," he said. "I'm going to
be working around Cuzco myself. By the way, my name's Martin Lander."
I nodded, but I didn't say anything. The plane was coming in to land now.
I'm nervous when the plane takes off, but I'm even more nervous when it
lands. I don't know why. It's silly really. When I see the ground coming up
to meet the plane, I just feel sick. I gripped the arms of my seat with my
hands, I must remember not to ask for a window seat the next time I fly.
This time the pilot made a perfect landing. There was hardly a
bump. Still, I breathed a sigh of relief when I heard the announcement.
"Good afternoon, ladies and gentlemen. We have now landed at Lima
International Airport. The local time is 15.30 hours ..."
There was a line of people at Immigration, and I seemed to have to wait a
long time. I was aware that Martin Lander was just behind me, but I
pretended not to see him. You don't talk to people after you get off a plane.
When you are on the plane you are friends, but as soon as you get off, you
become strangers again. It's curious really.
I finally collected my luggage and went through Customs. They wanted to
look at everything in my luggage, especially the laser machine. But I
explained that I was part of a UNESCO archaeological project. I showed
them some papers and then they let me through. I went into the terminal
building. There was a big crowd of people waiting. But soon I heard a voice
calling out my name.
"Leila! Leila! Over here."
It was Dr Hafez. I smiled and waved hack. He was very pleased to see me.
"It's wonderful to see you, Leila," he said. "How are you? How was your
flight? How is your father? And Samira?"
So many questions! And I was tired. Tired, but excited to have arrived.
"Everyone in Cairo is fine, Dr Hafez. They all send their greetings. And the
flight was okay, but it was so long. It's the longest time I've ever been in the
air."
"Did you bring the laser?" Dr Hafez asked.
"Yes, of course. They asked me about it in Customs - "
Dr Hafez was staring at someone behind me. Somehow I knew it was
Martin Lander even before I turned. I didn't know what to do. I decided to
introduce them. "Oh, Dr Hafez, this Js Mr. Lander," I said. "I met him on
the plane."
Dr Hafez looked puzzled. "Haven't we met before somewhere?" he
asked. "In the Machu Picchu area, wasn't it? You were doing some
archaeological work there."
Mr.Mahmoud Fathy ‫ محمود فتحى‬/‫أ‬
Lander laughed. "No, I'm afraid that wasn't me. I'm a mining engineer, not
an archaeologist. I'm sure I would have remembered meeting you. But it's
a pleasure to meet you now. Your assistant has been telling me about your
work in Egypt."
Dr Hafez's eyes lit up. "Ah yes, the Valley of the Nobles excavations!" he
exclaimed. "Wonderful tombs - "
"Dr Hafez, I think we need to go. The plane to Cuzco leaves very soon,
doesn't it?"
"Does it? Oh yes, I think you're right. Is that the time? Oh dear. We'd
better hurry. Nice to meet you, Mr. Mander."
Martin Lander didn't correct him. "I hope we meet again in Peru," he said.

Chapter 3 The flight to Cuzco

The plane to Cuzco was full. We took off from Lima and soon left the thick
cloud behind. I looked down and saw the coastal plain. It looked very dry
and reminded me of the desert in Egypt. But after a short time we started
to go over mountains. These mountains were green - they were covered in
trees and bushes. The sides were steep and I could see fast-flowing rivers.
There was a big party of German tourists on board. But Dr Hafez and I
were able to sit together. He read through the papers I had brought with
me. As he read, he nodded to himself.
"Yes," he said. "It is just as I thought. Good." He put the papers away in his
briefcase. "Sorry, Leila," he said, "but I just had to read these latest papers
that you brought. These papers show that we're working along
the right lines."
I asked him how the excavations were going.
"We're digging at a site near Quenco," he said. "It's about three hours by
car from Cuzco. We now believe there was once a great city there."
"That's really exciting, isn't it?"
Dr Hafez smiled. "Yes, it is exciting. Of course, everyone knows about
Machu Picchu, the great Inca city that was lost for hundreds of years.
That's where those German tourists are going, no doubt. But we believe
there are other Inca cities and cities of the peoples they conquered. Some
of them haven't been discovered. Not yet, anyway."
I could see that Dr Hafez had something that he wanted to tell me. "What
have you found?" I asked. -.,.
Dr Hafez looked around him. But the Germans were laughing and talking
to each other. No one was listening to our conversation.
"You've come at a good time, Leila," Dr Hafez went on. He spoke in
a quiet voice. "Two days ago we found a wall in the city. We think it
may be the wall of a tomb. We're going to break through into the tomb
this week."
Mr.Mahmoud Fathy ‫ محمود فتحى‬/‫أ‬
I was really excited now. "A tomb," I said. "What kind of tomb?" "It could
be the tomb of a king," he said. "How do you know?"
"There are some marks on the wall. There's also a picture of a
llama. That's a sign that it may be a royal tomb."
I didn't say anything. I just looked at him. Dr Hafez laughed.
"It's funny, isn't it? Here we are, two Egyptians digging up
ancient Inca tombs. But our experience in the Valley of the Nobles is
really useful. It is very interesting to discover the similarities and
differences between the ways the Incas and the Ancient Egyptians buried
their dead."
"For example," Dr Hafez went on, "the Incas and the Ancient Egyptians
put gold and silver objects beside the bodies of their kings and they
dressed them in beautiful clothes. They put gold masks on their faces. They
put gold figures of animals in their tombs. And they put food and drink
beside them. They believed that their kings and queens would need food
and drink when they went into the next world."
"Did the Incas make mummies of their kings and queens?"
"Yes, they did," Dr Hafez said. "The Inca kings were mummified. And there
was something really interesting that did not happen in Egypt. Every year
at important festivals, the mummified kings were put on litters and
dressed in fine clothes. They were taken through the streets!"
"So there were some differences between what the Incas did and what the
Ancient Egyptians did?"
"Yes, of course. And the Incas did something else that the
Ancient Egyptians never did."
"What was that?" I asked.
Again Dr Hafez looked around him as if he didn't want anyone to hear
what he was going to say. "The Incas killed women and servants and
buried them with the king. They were to take care of the king in the next
world."
After that we didn't speak for a few minutes. Dr Hafez turned away and
looked out of the window. We were flying over high mountains. They were
covered in snow.
"The Andes," I said. "They're beautiful, aren't they? I've never seen
mountains like these before."
Dr Hafez nodded. "Some of the mountain tops are over 6,000 metres high.
It is amazing to think we are not far from the equator and yet
there is always snow."
Dr Hafez didn't speak again for a while. Then he turned to me. "Leila, that
man we met at the airport. Mander, was that his name?" "Lander. Martin
Lander. He said he works for United Mining."
Mr.Mahmoud Fathy ‫ محمود فتحى‬/‫أ‬
"I'm sure I've met him before. His name wasn't Lander, though.
He used to work for United Mining, but he got involved with some people
who were taking Inca objects out of the country. I think he had to leave his
job with United Mining. And that's another thing. I don't think United
Mining is working in Peru now."
"Maybe it's a different man. Lander said he didn't know you."
"Yes, maybe you're right. But you can't be too careful. You didn't tell him
anything about our work in Peru, Leila, did you?"
I felt my face grow hot. I remembered the questions Martin Lander had
asked me. "Well, I told him a little about it. But not much."
Dr Hafez looked serious. "You must be careful, Leila. There are people who
come to Peru and dig up old Inca cities. They aren't archaeologists like us.
They don't care about the things of the past. They break into tombs. They
find gold and silver things and take them out of the country. These things
should be in museums for everyone to see. But the thieves sell them to rich
collectors."
"Don't these collectors know the things are stolen?"
"Some do, some don't. But most of them don't care. So be careful what
you say and who you speak to, Leila."
"Yes, Dr Hafez," I said.
"Anyway, before we land, I need to talk to you a little about our work and
how we are organised. There are two teams under my direction. You will
be in charge of one team with three local archaeologists. I find it
is better to have small teams rather than one big one. I need someone who
understands me. Someone I can trust. That is why 1 was so keen that you
came to Peru. I find it can be very difficult here sometimes. The local
people have different ideas and as I don't speak Spanish and they don't
speak Arabic, we have to use English. Sometimes I can't understand their
English. I think a younger person is needed."
I was really surprised. "But Dr Hafez," I said. "Are you sure it is a good idea
for me to be in charge of a team?
"Yes, of course. Don't worry. It will be all right."
The FASTEN SEAT BELTS sign came on and the plane started descending.
The flight attendant told us that we would be arriving in Cuzco in ten
minutes. I fastened my seat belt, but my hands were shaking a little. Dr
Hafez looked at me.
"You look a bit pale," he said. "Are you all right?"
"Yes, of course," I said. "I just don't like landing. Especially in small planes
like this."
But I was also thinking about what Dr Hafez had said. Me, in charge of
local archaeologists? I wasn't expecting that.
Mr.Mahmoud Fathy ‫ محمود فتحى‬/‫أ‬
We hit the ground with a bump, but the plane soon slowed down. There
was the usual roaring sound which always frightens me and we taxied
towards the terminal of Cuzco airport.
"Okay now, Leila?" Dr Hafez asked. I tried to smile. "Yes, thanks. I'm fine."
Cuzco airport was quite small. The German tourists got off first. Smiling
men and women from their tour company were waiting for them. They
were holding up a sign saying WELCOME TO PERU TOURS GROUP. We
waited until the tour party had got out of the way. We picked up my
luggage and headed for the exit. A woman about the same age as me was
waiting for us. She was wearing
trousers, a brown shirt and a short overcoat.
"Leila, I want you to meet Amalia Guzman, one of the local archaeologists
working on our excavation. Amalia, this is Leila El-Assaby. She's flown all
the way from Egypt to work with us."
We shook hands..
"Did you have a good flight?" Amalia asked. "Yes, it was fine, but I'm
feeling a bit tired." "Leila doesn't like flying," Dr Hafez said.
"I'm sorry to hear that," said Amalia. She looked at me without a smile.
Then she turned to Dr Hafez.
"I've got the Land Rover here, Dr Hafez," she said. "Let me help you
with your things."
Dr Hafez refused her offer of help. I had much more baggage than Dr
Hafez, but Amalia didn't offer to help me. Instead, she turned and led the
way out of the airport. In a few minutes we were in the Land Rover. Amalia
drove. She chatted to Dr Hafez while she drove. I sat in the back. We drove
out of Cuzco and along a dusty road.
I was so excited to be in Peru. I couldn't wait to get to the site of the
excavation and see what Dr Hafez had done. I had explored tombs in Egypt
with Dr Hafez, but this would be different. I was excited and a little
nervous. Would I be able to do the work Dr Hafez wanted me to do? He
had brought me out to Peru to do a job. I hoped I wouldn't let him down.

THE CHAPTER IN POINTS CH 3

• Leila and Dr Hafez took the plane from Lima to Cuzco.
• Dr Hafez read through the papers that Leila had brought with her and made sure that
they were working along the right lines.
• Leila asked Dr Hafez about the excavations and how they were going.
• Dr Hafez told her that they were digging at a site near Quenco which is three hours by car
from Cuzco where there was once a great city there.
• Dr Hafez told Leila that everyone knew about Machu Picchu, the great Inca city that was
lost for hundreds of years.
• They believed that there were other Inca cities of the people they conquered, some
of them hadn't been discovered at that time.
• Dr Hafez told Leila that two days before they had found a wall in the city and he
thought it might be a wall of a tomb and they were going to break through into the
tomb that week.
• It could be a tomb of a king because there were some marks on the wall and there
was also a picture of a llama. That's a sign that the tomb might be royal.
• Their experience in the valley of Nobles was really useful.
• Dr Hafez said it was very interesting to discover the similarities and differences
between the ways the Incas and the ancient Egyptians buried their dead.

Chapter 4 The hill of the king

I was dead tired when we got to the camp and went straight to bed. Of
course, I woke up in the middle of the night and couldn't get back to sleep
again. That is jet-lag. It would take me a few days to adjust to the time
difference and the altitude. At the moment my body thought day was night
and night was day. So when it was time to get up, I was still tired.
"How are you feeling?" Dr Hafez asked as we ate breakfast.
"I'm okay," I replied, "but I'm still pretty tired. And I've got a bit of a
headache."
"That will be the altitude," Dr Hafez said. "Go and see Amalia. She's got
some headache pills. Take a couple of those and you'll soon be all right."
"Okay," I said.
"I have to go into Quenco for a meeting. We're expecting a visit from the
local UNESCO representative next week. We want to make sure that
she gets a good impression of what we're doing here."
"Is there a problem about that?" I asked.
"No, not really, but this is an important project for us and the Peruvian
government. And it is the first time there has been this kind of exchange.
UNESCO is supporting us until the end of this year. But if we don't find
something important before then, they may not want to support us next
year. There are so many archaeological projects that need help."
"What do you want me to do while you're in Quenco?" My head was really
hurting me now. I needed Amalia's headache pills quickly.
"Amalia will show you around the site and tell you what we've done."
I found Amalia working on one corner of the site. She gave me a couple of
pills and I took them with a glass of water.
"Could you show me around the site? I'd really like to know
how far you've got with the excavation."
"Of course. I'd be glad to," Amalia replied.
But she didn't seem to be very happy to show me around. I wondered why
she didn't seem very friendly. She didn't seem very happy to see me there
at all. I couldn't understand why. Before she started to explain what they
had done on the site, she asked me how much I knew about Inca
civilisation.
"I did some work on the Incas when I was studying at the Italian Institute
of Archaeology. And of course I've read Dr Hafez's reports about the
excavation."
"Oh yes," Amalia said with a smile. "Dr Hafez – I suppose that's why
you're here in Peru."
I knew what she was trying to say. She meant that I was only here because
Dr Hafez was a friend of my family. I wondered if that was why she wasn't
very friendly to me.
Mr.Mahmoud Fathy ‫ محمود فتحى‬/‫أ‬
"Of course I'm happy to be working with Dr Hafez. I've worked with him
before," I said rather defensively. "But don't get the wrong idea, Amalia.
I'm here because I'm an experienced archaeologist and Dr Hafez thought
my experience would be useful in this excavation."
"Yes, of course," she said. "Where did you work with him before?"
"In Egypt, in the Valley of the Nobles. We excavated the tomb of Sennofer
together. You may have heard of it?"
Amalia looked at me carefully. "Oh yes," she said slowly. "Yes, I have. So
you worked on Sennofer's tomb?"….. I nodded.
Amalia didn't say much after that. She showed me the site. It was quite
similar to Machu Picchu, on top of a rocky hill and surrounded by other
peaks.
Near the excavation area there were huts. One hut had spades and other
tools leaning against its side. I could see some people working. Dr Hafez
had told me there were about twenty people working on the project.
Already you could see the outlines of different buildings. There were
foundations of walls. Everywhere people were carefully brushing away
earth. Amalia started to explain what they were looking for. She pointed
towards the side of a hill.
"We think that we may have found a tomb of a Chimu king. The
Chimu sometimes built their tombs in hillsides like this. And that hill is
called 'hill of the king in the Inca language," Amalia said to me. "The Incas
conquered the Chimu but they allowed their kings to rule - if they were
loyal to the Incas. They sent the Chimu kings' sons to Cuzco, the Inca
capital, to make sure their fathers were loyal!" •.
"How interesting," I said. "And what have you found so far?"
"Some bits of pottery," Amalia replied. "And we've found the bones of
some animals. We've been working on that building over there. We think
it's a kind of entrance hall. Perhaps it is where the priests carried out their
rituals. And at the end of the building you can see a wall. " She pointed to a
wall in the hillside. The bushes had been cleared away and I could see a
pattern of rocks.
"So you think the tomb is behind that wall?"
"Yes, we think so. But we Won't know until we make a hole in
the wall and see what lies behind it."
Suddenly there was a shout from one of the men working on the site. He
called us over.
"It looks like Ramon has found something interesting. Let's
have a look."
We walked over to where Ramon was working. Ramon was a small dark
man with a face burned by the sun. He had brushed away the earth from
something.
"What is it, Ramon?" said Amalia.
"It's a gold figure of a child," Ramon said. "The Incas sacrificed
children to please the gods. They put these gold figures beside
the body of the little girl or boy."
Mr.Mahmoud Fathy ‫ محمود فتحى‬/‫أ‬
"How terrible," I said. -"Yes, a person's life did not have much
value for the Incas." Ramon said something to Amalia in Spanish. She
nodded her head and Ramon went off quickly in the direction of a hut. She
turned to me to explain. "Ramon has gone to get Pablo Alvarez. We show
Pablo everything we find here."
"Who is he?"
"Pablo works for the Peruvian Ministry of Culture. He's also on the
committee which advises the UNESCO representative about our project.
He makes a note of everything we find. Of course, everything we find
stays in Peru. It belongs to the Peruvian people. You know
there are thieves here who try to rob our tombs."
"I know," I said. "We've had the same problem in Egypt since the time of
the Pharaohs."
"Oh, here's Pablo," Amalia said. "He'll tell you all about what he does."
A tall young man came towards us.
"Where is the figure?" he asked. Amalia showed it to him. He looked at it.
"Beautiful. So interesting and so sad," he said. "There may be
wonderful things inside this tomb. When are you going to open it?"
"Very soon," Amalia said. "In the next few days. Then well find out for
sure. Pablo, let me introduce Leila El-Assaby."
"Ah yes, mucho gusto, I'm pleased to meet you," said Pablo. "Is this your
first visit to Peru?" "Yes," I replied.
"Do you know much about Peru and its ancient culture?"
"Not as much as you, I'm sure," 1 said. "But I read quite a lot about Peru
before I came here."
"I hope you have learned what the Inca culture means to the people
of Peru today," he said. "The Incas were a great civilisation. They ruled
over a huge area of South America. Their empire extended from what is
now Colombia in the north to the country that is now Chile in the south.
They ruled over mote than ten million people.
They built great cities and made beautiful things. We Peruvians are very
proud of our Inca heritage. We allow foreigners to come here and excavate
our ancient cities. We are happy to do that, but we want to keep the things
you find here in Peru, where they belong. We have to be careful, because
there are many robbers who come here to steal our culture and sell it to
rich collectors. There are even museums that buy objects that have been
stolen from Peru. Museums - not private collectors. Can you believe that?"
He smiled. "I'm sorry, Miss El-Assaby. I've just met you already I'm
making a speech."
"No, you're quite right, Senor Alvarez. We must not let anything fall
into the hands of thieves."
"Bueno. Good," he said. "Then we agree about this. It is nice to meet you,
Miss El-Assaby. Hasta luego. Goodbye for now." ^
Three days later we broke through the wall into the tomb. It was one of the
most exciting days of my life. I sat down late that afternoon and wrote a
long e-mail to Samira. I knew she'd want to hear about it. I told her she
could write an article about it for her newspaper. Anyway, this is what I wrote.
Mr.Mahmoud Fathy ‫ محمود فتحى‬/‫أ‬
Dear Samira,
We haven't found treasure - yet. But this has been an amazing day! We
opened the wall of a tomb. It may be the tomb of a king. We're all very
excited here. The area around the wall had been cleared before I arrived. It
had been covered with thick bushes. I was amazed by the wall. The blocks of
stone were so beautifully cut and put in place like a giant jigsaw puzzle.
We had to work very slowly because we didn't want to damage them in any
way. Eventually we managed to move one stone and take it out. We
removed some more blocks of stone, again very carefully. Soon we had a
hole that was big enough for someone to go through. Dr Hafez asked
Ramon, one of our workers, to go into the tomb first. Ramon's quite small.
He's the only one of our workers who is, small enough to get through the
hole. " Ramon got ready to enter the tomb. He had a large flashlight with
him. There was a long rope tied round his waist. Dr Hafez' pulled the rope
to make sure it was tight. He wrapped one end of the rope around his body.
"Be careful, Ramon," Dr Hafez said. "Go as far as you can. Tell us what
you see." Ramon slipped through the hole in the wall. Dr Hafez let the
rope pass through his hands. We watched the rope and waited. We seemed
to be waiting for a long time. But it was probably only a couple of minutes
before we heard Ramon's voice on the two-way radio.
"Hello, Dr Hafez!" he called. "Yes, Ramon," Dr Hafez called. " What can
you see ?" "I'm at the bottom of the cave," Ramon said. "It's really quite
deep. I can see some bones and some bits of pottery. But that's all I can see
right now." "Are the bones animal bones or human bones ?" Dr Hafez
asked. "Human bones," said Ramon. "Good. We'll put a ladder down now
and Ramon can fix it securely," Dr Hafez said. Two workmen lowered a
long ladder. By now it was getting dark. It gets dark early near the equator.
After Ramon got out, Dr Hafez ordered that the wall should be shut up
again. "We can't do any more today," he said. "We'll get all our equipment
ready to start our exploration of the tomb tomorrow. Well done, Ramon.
Well done, everyone." Samira, there's only one thing that is worrying me.
One of the archaeologists here obviously doesn't tike me. I think she
doesn't like the fact that I am Dr Hafez's assistant and that I am in charge
of her team. I'm going to have to talk to him. Anyway, we're going to start
exploring the tomb. I'll e-mail you again and tell you what happens. Your
loving sister, • Leila

Chapter 5 A meeting in Quenco
When I finished my e-mail to Samira that afternoon, I thought about what
I'd written. I could hardly believe it. Dr Hafez had thought there was a
royal tomb in the city. Now it seemed he was right. I couldn't wait to
explore the tomb. But I was also worried. I was upset that Amalia was so
unfriendly to me. I went to find Dr Hafez. He was sitting in front of his lap-
top computer. I wondered if he was e-mailing someone too. "Are you busy,
Dr Hafez?" I asked. "Hello, Leila. No, I'm having problems with my
computer. I'll have to go into our office in Quenco and see if they can help.
Would you like to come with me?"
I was disappointed. "Aren't we going to explore the tomb?" I asked.
Dr Hafez laughed. "Of course we are. We'll start the day after tomorrow.
But I need to get my computer fixed as quickly as possible. I also need to
see the UNESCO people before they come to inspect us. There are always a
lot of things to do."
"I know," I said. "Dr Hafez, there is one thing I wanted to ask your
advice about."
"What's that?" "Amalia. She isn't very friendly towards me."
He looked at me. "Why? What's the matter, Leila? Don't you like Amalia?"
Mr.Mahmoud Fathy ‫ محمود فتحى‬/‫أ‬
"I don't think she likes me much."
"Don't be silly, Leila. You two are about the same age. You're both
archaeologists. You should be friends."
"I know. You're right. Maybe it's because I'm your assistant. Or maybe it's
because she's in my team. There was no one in charge until I arrived."
"You'll get along better when you start working with her properly.
She's a good archaeologist. She knows a lot about these tombs.
She's done a lot of good work on this excavation. Anyway, you haven't
answered my question."
"What question?" "Are you going to come with me to Quenco tomorrow?
You can take a look around the town while I'm busy. There are some
interesting Spanish-style houses and squares in the old part of town."
So next morning we set off down the dusty track to Quenco. Amalia drove.
Dr Hafez has never liked driving, especially, he says, in a foreign country.
Most of the town was new with the usual shops and restaurants. Dr Hafez
went to the project office, but I decided to wander off into the old part of
the town. He told me where the most interesting churches and squares
were. I walked down quiet little streets. It was a warm day. Women
dressed in colourful hats and dresses sat in the sunshine. Children ran
after me, laughing and clapping their hands. These people are the Incas of
today, I thought. Their ancestors ruled a great empire. How strange that I
should be exploring the tomb of one of their kings.
It was hot now and I was feeling a little tired. I still had a bit of a headache.
Perhaps it was a combination of jet-lag and the effects of the altitude. I
needed to sit down and have a cool drink. Maybe there was a cafe nearby.
Dr Hafez and I had agreed to meet at twelve o'clock at the Hotel Grande. I
looked at my watch. It was half-past eleven. I had time for a drink if I could
find a cafe.
I came to a bigger street. It opened out onto a big square. A sign on the
wall said PLAZA MAYOR. There must be a cafe in the square, I thought.
There it was. Cafe de la Plaza, the sign said. There were some people sitting
outside drinking coffee in the sunshine. But I was hot and I wanted a table
out of the sun. I looked at the tables in the shade. There was someone I
knew sitting at one of the tables. It was Amalia. I hesitated, then I thought
of what Dr Hafez had said about making friends with her. He was right. It
was silly for us not to know each other better. I decided to go and talk to
her. But then I saw something that made me stop dead.
There was someone sitting at Amalia's table. It was a man, and his face was
in the shadow. He seemed to have fair hair and he was wearing a shirt with
the sleeves rolled up. Was it the man I had met on the plane? If it was, I
didn't want them to see me. If it was Lander, what was he doing there? I
saw Amalia shaking her head. She seemed upset about something.
Mr.Mahmoud Fathy ‫ محمود فتحى‬/‫أ‬
As I stood in a doorway watching them, I noticed Pablo cross the square
and go in the direction of the UNESCO office. Then the clock in a church
tower started to strike the hour. I looked at my watch. Twelve noon. I was
going to be late for my meeting with Dr Hafez. Was I being suspicious for
nothing? Was I feeling suspicious because I knew that Amalia didn't like
me? I decided to tell Dr Hafez about seeing Amalia and the man together.
I found my way to the Hotel Grande. Dr Hafez was waiting outside. "Ah,
there you are," he said. "I was wondering what had happened." "Dr Hafez.
Quick! Come with me. I have to show you something." I led him back
through the side streets to the square.
"Look," I said, and pointed to the table where Amalia and the man had
been sitting. But two other people were sitting at the table now.
"What is it?" Dr Hafez asked.
"Amalia Guzman and the man from the mining company - "
"Mander?"
"Martin Lander. I think that they were sitting at that table. They were
talking. You remember what you told me about Lander? You thought he
helped people to steal things from excavations."
"I did. You're right. But are you sure it was the same man? If it was Lander,
it would be a bit strange, I agree. But I can't believe Amalia would do
anything wrong. I trust her."
"All right, Doctor Hafez," I said. I didn't know what to think. I was Still
feeling a little strange from the thin air at such high altitude.
"I don't think you should be so suspicious, Leila. You do worry,
don't you? Not like your sister, Samira. She never worries about anything.
You should be a bit more like her. Anyway, it's time for lunch. I know a
little restaurant. Good family cooking. We'll go there."
At lunch, Dr Hafez spoke again. "Look, I know you don't like Amalia very
much. And maybe she doesn't like you, because you're my assistant or
because you're in charge of her team. I'll have a word with her about
that. But you really must try to work with her. She works hard and she's a
good member of this excavation."
We finished our lunch and Dr Hafez paid the bill.
"I've got my computer fixed and seen the UNESCO people," Dr Hafez said.
"Let's get back to the camp. We're going into the tomb tomorrow."
But I was still worried. When I got back to the camp, I got out my lap-top
and logged on to the internet. I called up the United Mining website. It
gave a list of places where they were mining or making preparations for
mining. I checked through the list of countries and found "Peru". This is
what came up:
PERU: United Mining operations in Peru ended in 1999. There are no
plans to survey or mine in Peru at the present time.
Mr.Mahmoud Fathy ‫ محمود فتحى‬/‫أ‬
I looked at the screen. I was right. Martin Lander was lying when he said
that he was working for United Mining in Peru. So if it was Lander, what
was he doing here?

Chapter 6 Inside the tomb

The next day I went into the tomb with Dr Hafez and the others. We were
all curious. Ramon and the other workers had made the hole in the wall
wider. They had put a ladder inside the cave. It isn't easy climbing down a
ladder in the dark. I was wearing a helmet with a flashlight on it. When I
turned my head the lamp lit up the rock in front of me. But the flashlight
didn't help me find where to put my feet! Little by little I reached the floor
of the cave. It was cool and dry inside. The only air came from the hole we
had made in the wall.
When all four of us were down on the floor of the cave, we started to look
around. Ramon had said he had seen bones, human bones. We soon found
these near the centre of the cave. Some bones were missing, and some
were covered with earth, but they were clearly the bones of a man.
He was on the ground in a sitting position. There were some small pieces
of cloth. They looked dull now, hut perhaps the colours were bright when
the body was buried, perhaps five or six hundred years before. We looked
closer at the body. Then I gasped. So did the others. The skull was broken
and there was a big crack across it.
"He might have been killed," Dr Hafez said slowly. He spoke in a
whisper, as if he didn't want to disturb the dead man's sleep.
"That's right," said Dr Hafez.
"But the skull could have been broken by falling rocks, couldn't it?"
I said. Dr Hafez smiled. "Yes, Leila. That's also possible," he said. "We
must keep both possibilities in mind until we have proof that one is
correct." "So is it the body of a Chimu king?" asked Amalia.
"Probably. Or it could be a nobleman or an important official. But
we need to find more proof. If we can find a gold mask, then we would
be sure it was a king. But the first thing to do is to date this cloth."
Dr Hafez opened his rucksack and took out the black box I had brought
from Cairo. I hadn't seen inside the box before. It had a dial and a small
screen on one side. Dr Hafez bent down and placed it over the cloth. When
he pressed a switch there was a low humming sound and a ray of red light
came from the box,
"What have you got there?" asked Pablo.
Mr.Mahmoud Fathy ‫ محمود فتحى‬/‫أ‬
"This is what Leila brought from Cairo. It's the latest way of dating
cloth. This machine gives out a laser beam and the date of the cloth is
shown here on this dial. It takes a few moments. Ah yes, here we are.
Around 1400." "Right in the middle of the Inca period," said Pablo.
"Well, that's a good start." We spent the rest of the morning taking a close
look at the area around the body. It was slow work. I knew what we were
looking for. In the time of the Incas people put bowls of food and water in
tombs. Already I could see some bits of pottery that might have been a
bowl. We would have to put the pieces together and see if they fitted. But
when they buried an important person like a king, they buried precious
things with them. If we could find some precious things, we might be able
to say that this was a king.
We worked for a few days before we found anything that was really
exciting. It was hard work. There was not much air in the cave and during
the day it soon became quite hot. The work was tiring. We used little
trowels to clear away the earth from around the bones,
Then we used little brushes to clean the stones and bricks. All day we were
bent over the earth. We had a break in the middle of the morning and
another at mid-day. After a few days of this I was really tired and my back
hurt. One morning I was sitting outside the tomb having a drink of water.
The sun was very bright and I had shut my eyes. Someone came and sat
beside me. "Are you all right? You look really tired."
I opened my eyes. It was Amalia. She looked quite worried.
"Yes, I'm a bit tired, but I'm okay."
"It's hard work in the tomb, isn't it? Still, I'm sure we'll find something
definite soon. Something that will tell us if it's the tomb of a king or
not." "Do you think it might not be a royal tomb?"
She shrugged her shoulders. "I know Dr Hafez is hoping it's a royal
tomb, but until we find something definite we won't know for sure.
We've only got a short time before the UNESCO inspection, so we really
need to find something soon." I looked at her. I wondered what she was
thinking. I wanted to make conversation. She was not at ease with me.
'You remember when we were in Quenco the other day?" I said. "Y-Yes,"
she said. Her expression didn't change.
'You were having a drink in a cafe in the main square," I went on. "I
thought I recognised the man you were talking to. I think I met him
on the plane." "Martin Lander?" she said. "What a coincidence. The world
is a small place. Yes, I've known him for years, He works for United
Mining." "Is he interested in archaeology?"
"Oh yes." she said. Then she was silent, She clearly didn't want to talk any
more, I didn't know what to think. I must have said the wrong thing. I was
finding it very difficult. work went on. I got more used to it and to the
Mr.Mahmoud Fathy ‫ محمود فتحى‬/‫أ‬
altitude. I suppose I got stronger, fitter. I certainly didn't feel so tired. And
then my big day came. T e-mailed Samira with the news.
Hi there, Samira!
Guess what? Your big sister is in the news! She's found something
important. It might prove that the tomb we are excavating is the tomb of a
king from Inca times. Of course, Dr. Hafez wants more proof, but it's a
pretty good sign. It was nearly the end of the day. We'd been working really
hard. It's hot and stuffy in the tomb and by the end of the afternoon,
everyone is really hot and tired. Well, we had finished working and I was
just starting to pack away my tools. I've got a trowel and a brush and a few
other things. I keep them in a bag. I picked up the bag to put the tools in it.
The bag brushed away some of the earth below it. I saw something shiny
on the ground. I got my brush out again and brushed more of the earth
away. It looked like a small round stone, but it was a dull yellow colour.
brushed more of the earth away. The head of an animal appeared. It was
very small, but it had a face and ears and eyes. I was really excited. I looked
around me. The others were all starting to leave the tomb.
Come on, Leila," Dr Hafez said. "It's time to stop working. You've done
enough for the day,"
"Dr Hafez, I think I've found something".
He rushed over. So did the others. I showed them the head of the animal.
We all started brushing away the earth from the figure. Very slowly and
carefully, we dug around the figure. At last we had brushed away all the
earth. Dr Hafez took it up in both hands and looked at it. It was tiny - only
about five centimetres long but it was an animal of some kind. It had a
square head and a thick tail. Dr Hafez held it up to the light.
"It's beautiful," he said in a whisper. "What is it?" I asked. '
"It's a llama," he said. "The Incas used Llamas like we used camels.
They hadn't invented the wheel, so everything was carried on the backs of
llamas." "It looks as if it's gold," Amalia said. "
"Yes, I think you're right," Dr Hafez replied. He turned the figure around in
his hands. He couldn't stop looking at it.
"Does it mean that this is the tomb of a king?"
Dr Hafez paused. "It means that it's the tomb of somebody important.
They only left gold figures in the tombs of kings and nobles. This gold
llama makes it more likely that it's a royal tomb," he said, "but it
doesn't prove that it is."
"We need to find a gold mask to be absolutely sure," said Amalia.
"Yes, you're right," Dr Hafez said. "Of course we need to find a gold
mask to be sure it's the tomb of a king. But this is still a great
discovery. Well done, Leila!"
Mr.Mahmoud Fathy ‫ محمود فتحى‬/‫أ‬
The others all congratulated me too. I took the little llama in my hands. It
was beautiful. To think it had been lying there for more than five hundred
years! Dr Hafez insisted on taking a photo of me holding the golden llama.
He's got one of those digital cameras, so I'm attaching it to this e-mail for
you to show to all the family. It's late now. Time for bed. Bye for now,
Your loving sister, . Leila
I wrote the e-mail in the office and attached the digital image. Dr Hafez
and the others had gone on into Quenco. Pablo Alvarez was very excited
about the golden llama and he wanted to tell his office about it. I decided
to stay at the site. I said 1 might go into town later. I wanted to tell Samira
about my discovery. When I'd finished the e-mail I didn't feel tired any
more. 1 was sorry I hadn't gone with the others into Quenco. Dr Hafez had
said he was going to take them all out for dinner at the best restaurant in
town. 1 wondered if I should call him on my mobile phone and tell him I
would come after all. I picked up the phone then put it down again. I
stretched my arms and yawned. I needed some fresh air.
I closed down my lap-top. I opened the office door and stepped outside.
The air was cool and fresh. I looked up at the sky. It was filled with stars.
In the clear mountain air, they were really bright. But it was the southern
hemisphere and I didn't recognise the familiar stars that I knew in Egypt. I
looked in the direction of the cave where I'd found the llama. I felt pleased.
Dr Hafez had been worried that he was wrong about the tomb. But now he
had dated the cloth and we'd found the gold llama. He was being careful,
but I think he was pretty certain that we had found a royal tomb.
I stretched my arms again. I decided to walk over to the tomb. I just
wanted to be there again. The entrance had been closed up. It was always
closed at the end of a day's digging. The workmen had put a simple
wooden door over the hole in the wall. But when I looked again, I saw that
the door wasn't completely closed. It had been left slightly open. That was
careless, I thought. I wondered who had done that. I walked up to the door
and was just about to close it when I noticed something else. There was a
light coming from inside the tomb. It wasn't a very bright light, but it was
definitely a light. Had someone left a torch inside the tomb?
My heart started to beat quicker. I felt afraid. But I had to find out what
was going on. My curiosity was greater than my nervousness. Was there
someone inside the tomb? If there was, who were they and what were they
doing there? I crept up to the entrance and opened it a bit further. I looked
down into the cave. The ladder was still in place. Below, on the floor of the
cave, a man was kneeling. There was a small lamp beside him on the
ground. That was the light I had seen. The man's back was turned to me.
But I guessed who it was before I could .

• They gasped and saw that the skull was broken and there was a big crack across it.
• Dr Hafez thought that the man might have been killed.
• Leila thought that the skull could have been broken by falling rocks.
• Dr Hafez remarked that they had to keep both possibilities in mind until they bad
proof that one was correct.
• Amalia asked if it was the body of a Chimu king.
•Dr Hafez said that it might be or it could be a nobleman or an important official.
They need to find more proof.
• Dr Hafez said that if they could find a gold mask, then they would be sure it was a
king.
• The first thing to do is to date that cloth.
• Dr Hafez used the latest way of dating cloth, the laser machine that Leila brought from
Cairo to date the piece of cloth.
• The laser machine gave a laser beam and the date was shown it was around 1400.
• Pablo said it was right in the middle of Inca period.
• In the time of the Incas people put bowls of food and water in tombs.
• Leila could see some bits of pottery that might have been a bowl.
• They would have to put the pieces together and see if they fitted.
• When the Incas buried an important person like a king, they buried precious things with
him.
• If they could find precious things they might be able to say that this was a king.
• They worked for a few days before they find any things important.
• It was hard and tiring work as there was not much air in the cave and it was very
hot during the day. It was quite hot.
•They used little trowels to clear away the earth from around the bones.
• They used little Brushes to clean the stones and bricks.
• All day they were bent over the earth.
• One day, while they were having a rest Amalia start a conversation with Leila about the
work.
• Amalia told her that they had a short time before the UNESCO inspection to discover
whether it was a royal tomb or not. They needed to find something soon.
• Leila asked Amalia about the man who was sitting with her at a Cafe.
• Amalia told he: it was Martin Lander who was interested in archaeology and working for
United Mining.
•Amalia didn't want to talk any more.
•Leila sent an e- mail to Samira saying "Your big sister is in the news.
•She told her that she had found something important to prove that the tomb they were
excavating was a tomb of a king from Inca times.
• Leila described how they had found some human bones and how Dr Hafez used the new
technique of dating a piece of cloth using the laser dating.
Mr.Mahmoud Fathy ‫ محمود فتحى‬/‫أ‬
• Leila told her sister about a gold figure of a llama which she had discovered.
• The figure was tiny - only about five centimeters long - it was an animal of some kind. It
had a square head and a thick tail. It was made of gold.
• Dr Hafez told her that the Incas used llamas like the Egyptian used camels.
• Everything was carried on the backs of llamas because they hadn't invented the wheel..
• Dr Hafez said that this meant it was the tomb of somebody important. The Incas only left
gold figures in the tombs of kings and nobles.
• That gold llama made it more likely that it was royal tomb but it didn't prove that it was.
• Dr Hafez thought that it was a greet discovery but still they needed to find a gold mask to
be sure it was a tomb of a king.
• All people congratulated Leila for this discovery because it was beautiful to think it had
been lying there for more than five hundred years.
• Dr Hafez insisted on taking a photo of Leila holding the golden llama with a digital camera.
• She attached the photo to this e-mail to show it to all the family.
• Pablo was very excited about the llama and wanted to tell hi; office about it.
• Dr Hafez and the others had gone on into Quenco to take them all out for dinner in the
best restaurant in town.
• Leila decided to stay at the site.
• Leila was sorry that she didn't go with them.
• Leila was excited and decided to walk over the tomb, just to be there again.
• The entrance was closed up. It was always closed at the end of a day's digging.
• The workmen used to put a simple wooden door over the hole in the wall.
• She noticed that the door wasn't completely closed. It was slightly open.
• She thought it was careless of them to forget it.
• She was about to close it when she noticed that there was a light coming from inside the
tomb.
• She thought that someone had left a torch inside.
• She felt afraid but her curiosity was greater than her nervousness.
• Was there someone inside the tomb? If there was. Who were they and what were they
doing there?
• She crept to the entrance and opened it. Looked down to find that the ladder was still in
place.
• She found a man kneeling and a small lamp beside him on the ground.
• She guessed that it was Martin Lander.

Chapter 7 Trapped
At first, I couldn't see what he was doing. But my eyes got used to the light.
I saw that he was bending over the floor of the cave near where we had
found the skeleton of the king. He was using a trowel to scrape the earth
away from something on the ground.
I was angry that someone was in the tomb at night. My anger made me
forget my fear. I began to climb down the ladder into the cave very
carefully and very quietly. I reached the bottom of the ladder. My heart
was racing. I wasn't sure what to do next. I suddenly realised that I
Mr.Mahmoud Fathy ‫ محمود فتحى‬/‫أ‬
probably couldn't climb up the ladder as quietly as I had climbed down. I
was now terribly afraid. Why had I come into the cave instead of calling for
help? I had to hide. The man was a little distance away. He was still busy
and he hadn't heard or seen me. I hid behind a big rock. Then the man
stopped what he was doing. He stood up. Perhaps he suddenly sensed that
he was not alone. He pointed his flashlight in different directions.
Fortunately I was well hidden. He turned and came in my direction. My
heart was beating fast. I thought he would find me. He stopped. There was
silence for a moment. But the man seemed to be in a hurry. He turned
again and went back to work. I heard the scrape of a trowel. I waited for a
minute or so, then looked round the rock. The man had his back turned to
me.
I couldn't see what he was doing from my hiding-place. I wanted to move a
little closer. I was just starting to move out from behind the rock when he
turned round again and this time he saw me.
It was Martin Lander. "What are you doing here?" he asked in a hard voice.
At first I couldn't speak. I was shaking with fear,
1 didn't say, "And what are you doing here?" Instead I said, "I saw a light. I
thought there was someone in the cave. I came to see what was
happening." "So we meet again, Miss El-Assaby."
I didn't know what to say at first. At last I was able to speak.
"So you're not a mining engineer," I said. "You're just here to steal
things that other people have found. You're a thief."
Lander smiled. "You're partly right. I was a mining engineer. But I became
more interested in other things. You can call me a thief if you like. But I'm
more of a collector, in fact. I appreciate fine things. I will be happy
to add them to my collection.""You can't. It's wrong," I said. "You're
stealing. This is an important excavation, important for Peru and for the
world. Everything we find here should go to a museum so that people can
see it."
"You may be right," he replied. "But I'm sure you will find plenty more
things. You're not going to miss a few little artefacts, however valuable.
I am very sorry not to find a gold mask. They are extremely
rare and very valuable. I'm sure there is one here.
Anyway, Miss El-Assaby, 1 cannot waste time talking to you. You have
disturbed my work, but no matter. I must go now. You, of course, will stay
here. Do not try to follow me. I hope you will spend a pleasant night in the
company of a great king. And now, goodbye."
He turned and quickly climbed the ladder. In a minute he had pulled the
ladder up behind him, closed the wooden door and was gone. I knew that
there was nothing I could do. I didn't try to follow him. I didn't try to cry
out. No one would hear me. I was so shaken that I fell to the ground and
Mr.Mahmoud Fathy ‫ محمود فتحى‬/‫أ‬
lay there for some time. I heard the distant sound of a car engine starting
and a car drive away.
I was in complete darkness. It was not a nice feeling. There was no light
and no sound. And it was cold. Time passed. I was very tired And then I
saw a skeleton dressed in a king's clothes coming towards me. The skeleton
was being carried on a. litter by four men. They looked like soldiers.
Behind this skeleton was another and behind that another. The skeletons
came closer and closer. I was surrounded on all sides by skeletons of dead
kings. They pointed at me and the soldiers raised their swords and were
about to attack me. Suddenly I woke up screaming "No! No!" .
After that I couldn't get back to sleep. I felt the cold more and more. The
night seemed endless. How long would it be before someone came to the
cave and found me? I heard a noise. It came from high above me. Someone
was opening the wooden door to the cave. "I'm down here," I called.
"Leila, are you all right? What happened?" It was Dr Hafez's voice.
The ladder came down and Dr Hafez and Ramon climbed down into the
cave. "Oh, Dr Hafez," I said. "I'm so glad you are here." And I told him
what had happened. "So it was Lander, was it?" Dr Hafez said. "But how
did he find this place so easily?"
"He must have asked in Cuzco or in Quenco," Ramon said. "People
know about our work." Quenco! That was it. It was Lander who was talking
to Amalia. Could she have told him? Dr Hafez looked at me and I looked at
him. We both had the same thought.
"It couldn't be Amalia," Dr Hafez said slowly. "She wouldn't do
anything like that."
"But I saw her in Quenco talking to him. She told me it was Lander."
"It may have been Lander," Dr Hafez said. "But that doesn't mean she told
him about our excavations. But she may have said something carelessly. It
is so easy to speak carelessly."
I remembered what I had said to Lander on the plane. I had been careless.
Perhaps I was responsible for him finding the cave. " "I'll speak to Amalia
now," said Dr Hafez. "We must find the truth. And we must find
Lander and the artefacts he took from the cave. I will have to go to the police.
Oh, these things are so difficult when you are not in your own country."
Dr Hafez helped me climb the ladder. I felt better when I reached the top.
Outside the day was bright and sunny. It seemed like a normal day.
"Come and get a hot drink," Dr Hafez said. "You must be very tired."
We went to a hut and I sat down. Someone brought me a cup of hot coffee.
I rested for a while. I was still shocked by everything that had happened.
Then the police arrived. There was a lot of noise and discussion. I didn't
understand what they were saying. Then they wanted to ask me questions.
They only spoke in Spanish. Ramon translated their questions.
After some time the police went away. "They think that Lander may
already be out of the country," Ramon said. "They will call the
Immigration Department at the airport but they think it may already be
too late. And in any case, they think Lander will have a false name and a
false passport. It won't be easy to catch him,"
I rested that day. I couldn't face going down into the cave again. Later in the
day, Dr Hafez came to see me. He told me about his meeting with Amalia.
Mr.Mahmoud Fathy ‫ محمود فتحى‬/‫أ‬
"She says that she has known Lander for a long time. He has many
contacts in Peru. He helped her find her first job in archaeology. She said
Lander knew her father. It was strange. She seemed unhappy about
something. There was something she didn't want to talk about. But she
says that she didn't talk to him about her work here. I think I believe her. I
don't believe she told Lander anything."
The next day work started again. Nobody knew what Martin Lander had
stolen from the cave. He had probably been working there several hours
before I found him. We wondered if we would find any more artefacts.
And then towards the end of the day, my trowel suddenly hit something
hard, something metal. "Ramon, come here. Can you help me?" I called.
"I think I've found something interesting." Ramon helped me
carefully dig around the object and take it out of the ground. It was a mask.
It was made of gold. We stood up and called the others.
Dr Hafez shone his flashlight on the mask. It shone with a lovely golden
colour. "It's a king's mask. It's like the face of the sun," he exclaimed.
"Look at the sun's rays. How wonderful!"
Everyone was very happy after all that had happened the day before. Now
we knew for certain that it was a royal tomb. We had made a great
discovery. We stopped work. We carefully took the gold mask to show to
Pablo. He was delighted. "I will put it in the safe," he said. "We don't
want another visit from Mr. Lander."
The next morning when I got to the site there were police cars again. I
wondered why they had come back.
I soon found out. The gold mask was no longer in the safe.

THE CHAPTER IN POINTS 7

Chapter 8 The safe is empty

The police were examining the safe. The thick metal door was open but the
lock had not been broken. A policeman was putting a special kind of
powder on the sale.
"Someone opened the door of the safe with a key," Dr Hafez
explained. "And the thief probably got into the hut through that window.
I'm afraid it was open." "But how could anyone get the key?" I
asked. "Have you spoken to Pablo?"
"Not yet," Dr Hafez replied. "He's in Quenco today. He has a meeting with
the UNESCO people. This will be really bad news for him. The UNESCO
people will not be happy when they hear about this."
The chief policeman came towards Dr Hafez. They went outside. They were
talking in low voices. After a few minutes, they came back. Dr Hafez spoke
to everyone. "I'm afraid that the police wish to take everyone's
fingerprints," he said. "They want to see whose fingerprints are on the safe.
And they want to search everyone's things."
Everyone had a place where they kept their work clothes at night and their
normal clothes during the day. We waited. Nobody spoke. There was a
feeling of suspicion in the air. Nobody was at ease. After some time I saw
the chief policeman go to Dr Hafez and talk quietly to him. Dr Hafez
looked up suddenly in my direction. His face was white and his eyes looked
strange. He came towards me. "Leila," he said in a low voice. "The police
chief wants to talk to you. Come to my office."
I was surprised. I thought they had asked me enough questions the day before.
We went into Dr Hafez's hut and he shut the door. "Leila," he said. "I am
very shocked and upset. The police have not found the gold
mask but they found this among your work clothes." The
policeman opened his hand. There was a little gold rabbit. "I didn't steal
that," I said. "I've never seen it before!" "But it was among your things."
Mr.Mahmoud Fathy ‫ محمود فتحى‬/‫أ‬
"I didn't steal it. I didn't steal it," I cried. I was shaking. How could this
possibly be happening to me? "I believe you, Leila," Dr Hafez said. "But
I'm afraid you'll have to go with the police now. I will have to; find out who
did this. It can't be Lander. Someone else must have done it. Someone who
doesn't like you. Someone who wants you to be blamed for the
theft of the gold mask." I was taken in a police car to the local police
station. I bad never been inside a police station before in my life. It was not
a pleasant experience. I was in a country far from home and I didn't speak
the language. At least they treated me with respect but they put me into a
police cell, locked the door and left me. At this point I burst into tears. Why
had I come to this country? Why had this happened to me? Why? Why?
Why? So many questions and so few answers. Later that day, I heard a
noise. I stood up and looked through the bars of my prison cell. A
policeman was coming. And there was someone with him. It was
Amalia. The policeman opened the cell door and then he left us. Amalia spoke
first."Oh, Leila, I'm sorry for what has happened. You must forgive
me." "Forgive you for what?"-I asked in surprise. "Forgive me because it
is my fault that you are here," Amalia said. "I was so angry when Dr
Hafez put you in charge of the excavating team. I wanted to be in charge.
And when you discovered the gold mask, I couldn't stand it any more. You
would got all the credit. Your name would be in all the newspapers and on
TV. By chance, after you found the gold mask, I found the little gold rabbit.
I didn't tell anybody. I kept it a secret. I put it among your work clothes to
get you into troubles . I didn't think that they would put you in prison. It
was a stupid thing to do but when you are angry and jealous, you don't think.
Oh, please forgive me."
"I understand, Amalia," I said quietly. "I have explained everything to
the police," Amalia said. "You're free to go. I've got a car outside."
We left the police station. We got into the car and Amalia drove off.
"Amalia," I said. "Have you any idea who stole the gold mask?"
"No," she replied. "But I have an idea where Martin Lander may be. And
the two may be connected. I feel sure they are. When I met him in Quenco,
he told me he was very keen to go to Acomayo. There is another excavation
taking place there. You probably didn't know that." "No, I didn't," I said.
"The problem in this country is communication," Amalia said. "The
roads are bad and it can take days to get to some places if the weather is
bad.""How long does it take to get to Acomayo?" 1 asked. "Five hours if
there are no land slides," Amalia replied. "Shall we call Dr Hafez?" "Yes,"
Amalia said. "I'll call him on my mobile." She dialled the number. "Oh,
hello, Dr Hafez,1' she said. "It's Amalia. I'm with Leila ... yes ... they've let
her go ... I'll explain everything later. We think we know where Lander has
gone. We think he will be at the excavation site near Acomayo. There may
just be time to catch him ..." We set off in the direction of Acomayo. The
road was narrow, and as we climbed higher into the mountains the
weather turned bad. Soon it seemed we were in mist, but I suddenly
realised that it was cloud. We were so high that we were travelling through
clouds. It was difficult and dangerous to drive. On one side there was a
Mr.Mahmoud Fathy ‫ محمود فتحى‬/‫أ‬
steep cliff dropping hundreds and hundreds of metres. On the other side
there was the mountain side. When it rained, rocks fell down the mountain
side onto the road. Amalia was a good driver. She drove as fast as she
could, but that was not very fast in these conditions. From time to time we
suddenly saw a sheep or a goat appear out of the cloud like a ghost. At last
we came out of the clouds. We were above them. All that we could see was
the tops of the mountains rising like islands from a sea of clouds. It was
like being in a plane

Chapter 9 A matter of life and death
Mr.Mahmoud Fathy ‫ محمود فتحى‬/‫أ‬
Suddenly we were back in thick cloud. It all happened so quickly. Perhaps
Amalia had lost her concentration a little. Or perhaps it was because the
road was broken. The car started to turn on its side and roll over the edge.
There was a great crashing noise and down, down we went ... and suddenly
everything went black. I woke up. The cloud had gone and you could see
the road and the mountain valleys. I had pains in my legs and arms and
there was blood on my face from a cut. But I didn't think I had broken
anything. We were still in the car. It was upside down on a ledge. I looked
round. It felt strange and my head ached. Amalia did not" move. I wasn't
sure if she was dead or not. "Amalia," I said. There was no answer.
"Amalia I said again. This time I saw that she was breathing. I put my
jacket over her and I held her hand. After a few moments she opened her
eyes. "What happened?" she said in a weak voice.
"We've had an accident," I said. "We must get help."
"I can't move," she said. 'T must have broken something. My leg. It
really hurts." I had trained in first aid. I knew how to make a splint. It
was important to make her comfortable first before trying to get help. I
had to do something and fast. At this altitude, you can die quickly from the
cold if you are badly injured.
It was extremely difficult to get her out of the car. She was in great pain,
almost too much to bear. I finally got her out and lay her down. We had
two blankets in the car. I put one underneath her and one , on top of her.
Then I made her a splint. She was very brave. She had the toughness of an
ancient Inca. Then I looked for the mobile phone. At first I couldn't find it,
but then I saw it on the ground outside the car. I turned it on. It didn't
work. It was broken. "Oh, no!" I said.
"Leila, you must save yourself," Amalia said. "Leave me here. Try to
get help, but it may be too late. There are so few people in the
mountains. It may take days before someone finds us. But you must try
I could see that she was weak, "Amalia," I said, "I will go to get help. Don't
worry." "Leila, before you go I must tell you about Martin. In case
you get back too late to help me. I want you to know about him. When
you saw me in Quenco talking to him, you probably thought I was working
with him."
"That's right," I said. "I did think that."
"Well, that's not true," she said. "As you know, he used to work as a mining
engineer. He worked with my father. He persuaded my father to put up
some money for a new silver mine that Martin said he had found. But it
wasn't true. There was no mine. My father lost all his money. We were
really poor then. It was very hard. And all because of him. Then that day in
Quenco, I saw him in the square. I think he was waiting for someone. I
Mr.Mahmoud Fathy ‫ محمود فتحى‬/‫أ‬
went to talk to him because I was still angry about what he did to my
father." "Oh, Amalia," I said. "How terrible."
"That is why I wanted to come with you to try to catch him. When I
learned that the police had arrested you, I realised I had done wrong. I
realised what my duty was."
"Amalia," I said. "I understand. I'm so sorry I thought badly of you. I
promise I'll do everything I can to catch that man. And I'll go to get
help now." "Leila, if you find someone, you must say, 'Ayuda-me pronto,
por-favor' - 'Please help me - quickly'. Go in the direction of Acomayo. You
may come to a village along the way."
I climbed up the side of the ledge and reached the road. I walked in the
direction of Acomayo as Amalia had said. I seemed to walk for a long time,
but later, I realised it was not far. All my body ached from the car crash
and I couldn't walk fast. At last I came to a few poor houses. I saw a
woman working outside one of the houses. "Ayuda-me pronto, por favor," I
said. She looked at me strangely. She didn't seem to understand. I learned
afterwards that many people in the mountains only speak Quechua, the
language of the Incas, and not Spanish. The woman went into the house
and a man came out. "Ayuda-me pronto, por favor," I repeated. The man
nodded. I pointed in the direction of the car. I made signs with my hands
to show a car rolling over the side of the mountain. Then I made more
signs to show someone injured. He nodded again. He went back inside the
house. When he came out again, he was carrying two long pieces of wood
with thick cloth between them. Another woman appeared and the four of
us set off in the direction of the car.
When we got back to the car, it was raining. Amalia looked very pal and
she didn't answer at first. In the end she opened her eyes a little.
I've found some help," I said. "These people will help us." We put Amalia
on the bed. It was like the litter I had seen in my terrible dream in the cave.
Slowly and with great difficulty we carried her up to the road. I was
amazed how strong the man and the two women were.
Finally we got to the houses. They took Amalia inside and gave her a hot
drink and some leaves to chew. "Bueno," the man said.
I wasn't sure. I was very worried about Amalia.
That night I slept in a rough bed next to Amalia. She cried in pain a lot and
it was nearly impossible for me to sleep. In the morning the women
brought me a sort of bitter tea and some bread. They continued to give
Amalia hot drinks and leaves to chew.
I needed to get a doctor as quickly as possible. The man understood. He
said, "Boose, boose". At last I understood that he meant bus! There must
be a bus coming this way. And indeed before long a bus came along the
road. The man put out his hand and the bus stopped. He spoke to the
Mr.Mahmoud Fathy ‫ محمود فتحى‬/‫أ‬
driver. Then he turned to me and said, "Acomayo, okay." I got on and
someone gave me a seat. The bus was full of people going to market. They
had hens and chickens and boxes and parcels.
After an hour we reached Acomayo. I had some Peruvian soles, luckily, and
I found a public telephone.
"Dr Hafez, Dr Hafez," I cried, as the telephone was connected. It was a very
bad line. "I'm in Acomayo. Amalia - " Suddenly the phone was cut off. I
tried again. Again the phone cut off. I tried one more time. The same thing
happened. I decided I had to find a doctor. I saw some signs. One of them
read Medico. That must be like medicine, I thought. I went in. A young
woman assistant was there. She spoke a little English.
"I need a doctor urgently," I said. "My friend was in a car crash. .She's
injured badly." The young woman knocked on a door and we went into
another room. She began to talk to a woman sitting at a desk. This woman
was a doctor and could speak English. She quickly realised that it, was
urgent. She picked up her coat and in a few minutes we were in . her car on
the road to the village.
When we got to the village, we all went inside the house. Amalia was
quieter but she was looking terrible. The doctor told me to go out. I went
outside and sat on a rock. I had so many thoughts in my head. Everything
had started so well and now everything had gone wrong. As I thought
about these things my eyes looked up the hillside. I noticed something - a
pattern of rocks that seemed familiar. At that moment the doctor came
out.
"Hospital now!" she said.
We got into the car and drove back to Acomayo. The doctor went into her
office. She picked up the phone and spoke urgently. Then she said
something to her assistant.
"A helicopter is coming to get your friend," the doctor said. "She needs a
hospital quickly. An ambulance would take too much time. It's a
matter of life and death."
We drove back to the village. Soon we heard the judd, judd, judd of a
helicopter. It came down on the road near the house. Quickly two men put
Amalia in the helicopter and I got in beside her. I waved goodbye to the
man and the women in the village. There was just enough space in the
helicopter for the four of us. We took off and before long we were at the
hospital in Cuzco. I had never been in a helicopter before. It was such a
small machine flying so near to the mountain tops. But this time I wasn't
nervous. I could only think of Amalia and how much I would like to catch
Martin Lander.
The next day Amalia was a little better. Dr Hafez arrived with Ramon. He
told me what had happened. "I was suspicious of Pablo," Dr Hafez said.
Mr.Mahmoud Fathy ‫ محمود فتحى‬/‫أ‬
(You know he went to Quenco to see the UNESCO people. I decided to go
and find him there. I arrived just in time. He was about to leave.
"He told me he was tired and excited the day we found the gold mask and
he left the keys in the hut by mistake. Someone must have climbed through
the open window and opened the safe with the keys. I didn't know whether
to believe him or not. I told him that I trusted him. I told him that all our
work together depended on the support of UNESCO. If the gold mask was
lost or stolen the project might come to an end.
"He said nothing. He stood there in front of me in silence. I didn't know
what to do or what to say. And then I had an idea.
"I told him that the police had caught Martin Lander. I knew it was not
true. But I wanted to see if Pablo would say anything. And he did!
Suddenly he began to talk. He told me how hard his life was, how little
money he was paid. He told me that he had a sick child and that he needed
to pay for expensive medicines.
"I didn't know what he was going to say next. But then he told me that he
had worked with Lander before. And he had met Lander in Quenco. It was
the day when you saw Amalia talking to Lander in the square. Lander had
offered him a lot of money for the gold mask.
"In the end, Pablo told me he has to meet Lander tonight at 8 o'clock here
in Cuzco."
"But that's in two hours," said Ramon.
"Let's set a trap," I said. "Let Pablo meet Lander. We will follow him
and catch Lander."
"That sounds too dangerous, Leila," Dr Hafez replied. "Let's call the
police." "
"There isn't time to call the police," I said. "We've got to catch Lander. I
promised Amalia. I've got to do it for her sake."

Chapter 10 Caught at last
An hour later Dr Hafez, Ramon and I were in a car following a taxi through
the streets of Cuzco. The taxi went to a little street in the old part of the
city. The taxi stopped. Pablo got out and went into a house. A few minutes
later he came out, called another taxi and went.
We waited. After about half an hour, the door of the house opened and
Martin Lander came out. He got into a small truck parked nearby and
drove off. We followed. "I wonder where he's going?" Dr Hafez said after a
few minutes. "I think he's going to the airport," Ramon replied. "But not to
the main entrance."
We followed Lander's truck to the far side of the airport. Everything was
dark. Ramon turned off the car headlights. It would be too easy for Lander
to see he was being followed. Lander stopped his truck, got out and opened
two metal gates with a key.
Mr.Mahmoud Fathy ‫ محمود فتحى‬/‫أ‬
"We have to stop him now," Ramon shouted, "before he gets back
into his truck and shuts the gates again."
Ramon stopped our car fifty metres away. We opened the doors and ran in
the darkness towards Lander. Lander was a big strong man and he would
fight. I didn't know if we could stop him. But we had the advantage of
surprise. I only hoped he didn't have a gun. Then T had an idea. The
engine of Lander's truck was running and the door was open. I jumped
into the truck, closed the door and pressed the automatic lock. I put the
truck into first gear and drove hard at Lander. He reached inside his
pocket to find something - a gun perhaps, but the truck was getting closer.
Lander turned and ran. Ramon followed. Lander turned a corner. I
followed in the truck, the headlights showing where Lander was. There in
front of us was a small single-engine plane. In a flash Lander had opened
the door of the plane and was turning the key to start the engine. Ramon
tried to jump onto the wing of the plane and open the door but the engine
suddenly started and the plane began to move. I didn't know what to do . I
had only a second to decide. I put my foot on the accelerator and drove as
hard as I could at the plane. There was a huge crash. The truck hit the side
of the plane and knocked it onto its side. I put the brakes on. I put my arms
and head on the steering wheel. I was shaking.
"He must have hit his head against the roof of the plane." It was
Ramon's voice. "He's knocked out."
Ramon was on the side of the plane which was now up in the air. I'll try to
get in," he said. But he couldn't open the door.I got out of the truck. I could
hardly walk.
"Leila, you were wonderful - amazing!" Dr Hafez said. "Don't worry now.
I've called the police."
And then I heard the sound of police sirens and saw their blue flashing
lights.
"I think that is the end of Mr. Lander's archaeological career,"
Dr Hafez said. We went back to the police station. This time I didn't mind
going. We told the police exactly what had happened.
"We will question Mr. Lander first," the police chief said. "We will let you
know what we find out."
Dr Hafez decided we should go to Quenco to rest for a few days before
starting work again. But first I wanted to see Amalia. We went to the
hospital in Cuzco. She was still in bed but she looked better. We told her
the news. She tried to smile. It was not easy for her.
Two days later Ramon took us by car to Quenco. The next day Dr Hafez
received a telephone call from the police chief. "We have found the gold
mask and the other things Mr. Lander had stolen," he said.
"Thank goodness!" said Dr Hafez. "Now the project can continue."
Mr.Mahmoud Fathy ‫ محمود فتحى‬/‫أ‬
One morning I was having breakfast in Quenco with Dr Hafez. I suddenly
had a thought. "Dr Hafez," I began. "I'd like to go back to the village on
the road to Acomayo. I'd like to thank the village people who saved Amalia."
"That's a good idea, Leila," Dr Hafez replied. "Ill ask Ramon to take us. I
hope the weather is better than when you went with Amalia."
We set off. this time the weather 'was perfect. The sun shone and I was
able to see the mountains and steep valleys.
We reached the village. We shook hands with the man and the women who
had helped us. Ramon translated for us. Then I remembered something I
had seen when I walked along the road.
"Dr Hafez," I said. "I want to show you something. Let's walk along
the road a little."
"You're not going to show me two strangers sitting at a cafe, are
you?" he said.
I laughed. We walked on a little further. I looked up at the mountain side.
"Look up there, Doctor," I said.
He looked up. "Goodness me," he said. "It looks like the pattern of
stone blocks at the Chimu king's tomb. That's amazing."
We returned to Quenco. The next day we started work again. I now only
had one more week before my return to Cairo.
Dr Hafez was very busy. I didn't talk to him for a few days. At last he came
to see me.
"Leila," he said. "I sent a team to the village near Acomayo and they think
it really is an Inca site. Our people can't work on that site. We have too
much to do here. But when Amalia comes out of hospital, I want her to
lead the team excavating the new site."
That's great news!" I said. "She'll be so pleased."
On the flight to New York, there was no one sitting beside me. And I did
not choose a window seat. But I had so many memories and so much to
think about, the time passed quickly. Soon I was on a plane to Cairo. I was
looking forward to seeing Samira and my family.
I saw the familiar skyline of Cairo - the pyramids and the Nile as we came
in to land. The plane landed and the doors were opened. immediately felt
the heat. I realised that I had got used to the coo temperatures of the
Andes mountains. But I was so excited to be home
After picking up my luggage I went into the arrivals hall. There were
Samira and my parents, And all around them were photographers! There
was a flash of lights and people calling, "Miss El-Assaby!" "Please! Miss El-
Assaby." I couldn't believe it.
The next day the newspaper headlines were full of the story of the Egyptian
archaeologist who bad made important discoveries in the land of the Incas.
And this archaeologist bad caught a thief who had stolen valuable
Mr.Mahmoud Fathy ‫ محمود فتحى‬/‫أ‬
artefacts! And she bad discovered a new Inca site. I read all the
newspapers as if in a dream.
They were talking about me!
