CONTESTED HERITAGES

PRESERVATION AND
TRANSFORMATION

STUDIO 10
ARCHITECTURE

UNIVERSITY OF BRIGHTON

Electric Avenue, Brixton

The existing building incorporated in my design
proposal is part of a contested site.
The leases at the property have up to 5 years until
expiry date. Once expired, the freeholder can refuse to renew them on the grounds of redevelopment, the market traders that occupy the ground
floor of the building are concerned that the redevelopment will affect there businesses and the disrupt
the cultural heritage of Brixton.
The existing building was built post-war after bomb
damage to the original 1888 terrace. Four shops
currently occupy the ground floor.
Exisitng Shops occupying ground floor of building:
AZIZ cash and carry, WING TAI supermarket,
Beauty World
Comestics, Brixton Foods Butchers

Journey of a Banana
Bananas are hand picked from trees, and packed
in perforated cardboard boxes.
The perforated boxes are secured to crates.
The crates are placed securely in refrigerated
containers, which are pre-cooled.
These containers are transported to various
destinations via ship, truck and railroad.
The handling system of the container is
completely mechanized, with the use of cranes,
forklifts and trucks. They are also numbered and
track using computerized systems.

Comfort Zone Person in relation to space

When experiencing a miniature space, there is great satisfaction when our perceptions
change and we become the largest, and therefore most important, part of the space.
This intimate space can be enjoyed amongst public spaces. However, the space is less enjoyable with the threat of someone else joining the space arises.
What size does a space have to be in order to be a private space within a public space?
What is the minimum size space in which one body can feel comfortable?

Programme
Archive and Hive - Preservation and Transformation
Reusing the existing building to accomodate the following:
Archive -An Archive of immigration through the fruit and vegetable products sold in Brixton market.
Hive - A public space of varying climatic spaces in which fruit and
vegetable plants are nurtured, as well as there being an informal
cooking space and
seating areas with a garden rooftop.
The archive and hive is primarily intended for use by market traders and buyers of the products archived. The climatic spaces are
experiential in which the user can relax and enjoy their preferred
atmosphere and temperature. The cooking space is available in
the warm and humid green room, exotic foods are cooked and
eaten in this space.
The archive is placed on the first floor of the existing building.
Parts of the archive are exposed to the public. The windows on
the first floor are transformed with the addition of glass panels
containing archived, dried fruit and vegetables.
The compost bins provided ensure that waste is reused within
the building, either in the garden space or for soil for plants growing in the climatic spaces.

Spaces within the building:

- Hot and dry space/ green room
- Hot and Humid space/ green room
- Warm and Humid space/ green room
- Garden including compost bins
- Archive storage room
- Archive office
- Archive drying and slicing room
- Archive exhibition space

DISSERTATION

WOMENS SPACE IN
NYAMAGABE

From July to September 2014, I was a volunteer with

the British-government-funded organization,
International Citizens Service in Rwanda. The purpose
of this dissertation was to explore the spaces created
by women of the self-help groups set up in
Nyamagabe. The groups are part of a scheme
introduced after the
genocide by African Evangelistic Enterprise to help
empower those in poverty. Through analysis of the
space created, the dissertation investigated the
womens creativity and inventiveness to design a
space. A space was here seen not only as physical
but also socially constructed, the embodiment of an
area for a given purpose. As the groups are specifically
intended for women only, the design of the space will
also inform whether gender positioning is enhanced by
spatial qualities.

AMALGAMATION
STUDIO 06
ARCHITECTURE

UNIVERSITY OF BRIGHTON

Offham is a small village near Lewes, East Sussex. It has a rich historic
background. My site is situated on Offham Chalk Pit. This site used to be
used for extracting chalk and turning it into limestone, using four limekilns.
The lime and chalk would be sent it to the River Ouse to be transported
to other parts of the country. On site there is the remains of an underground-tunnelled funicular tramway. This tramway transported carts up and
down a steep slope. The carts would be filled with lime at the top and then
emptied at the bottom and the chalk would then be placed onto horse and
cart, and carried to the River. The tramway tunnels were built in 1809 and
are Grade 2 listed.
Little remains of the original site, yet there are visual glues as to how the site
used to be used with the entrance to the tunnel still visible. Currently on site,
there is the Offham Chalk Pit Inn with a large car park area. It is a popular
pub destination for local residents.
The project I propose will transform the current site into a space that elaborately displays the history of the site with a museum, as well there being a
research centre that is aimed at exploring and discovering innovative deign
materials and a workshop space for the researchers. There is public access
to the Museum and private access to the research centre and workshop.
The Chalk Pit Inn will still be in use, and provide a space for visitors to eat
and drink as well as to be able to use toilet facilities.
