This painting youre now looking at is entitled
Look Mickey and was painted by the Pop art legend, Roy Lichtenstein remains up to now one of the greatest innovators of the Pop art movement. In the sixties, the painter drew direct inspiration from popular culture decided to depict the daily life and to portray the American consumer society of the time with bright colours and Ben-day dots. The painting Look Mickey, was donated as a gift to The national Gallery in Washington DC, is one of his masterpieces he painted in 1961 after his son dared him to do so. Look Mickey adapted a scene from the 1960 childrens book Lost and Found , depicts 2 iconic cartoon characters during a fishing mishap. (msaventure) The original comic illustration portrays Mickey Mouse and Donald Duck ( are) standing on a fishing pier. Donald . fishing pole is raised over his head, thinks he has caught a big fish ------------- he actually has hooked his own coattail. Behind him stands Mickey, is giggling at his friends mistake. --------------------------- the artist has kept Donald and Mickey in almost the same positions in his painting as they were in the original, he made several alterations to the original work ---------------------------- turn it into a more unified image. --------------------------- , he simplified the background -------------- removing non-essential characters. ------------- , he rotated the direction of the dock, .. enabled him to rotate the point of view by 90 degrees. ------------------------------------------ , ------------------------------------------ the original illustration, Donald looks off the side. -------------altering the position of Donalds body and fishing rod, the artist tried to give his painting a better balance. The scenes point of view has been altered, gives the viewer an opportunity to be closer to the characters. The artist -------------------------simplified the characters features -------------- he -------------- eliminated signs of stress. ------------- most importantly, he simplified the original image -------------- using primary colors with the aim to emphasize its mass appeal and give it the pop-art look. Stylistically, Lichtenstein was trying to imitate printed media --------------overusing industrial black lines, primary colors, and -------------- employing the ink dots of the Benday printing process in Donalds eyes and Mickeys face. He added the speech balloon LOOK MICKEY, IVE HOOKED A BIG ONE, makes the text part of the picture, ------------- to give life to his character. The inclusion of a speech balloon was, perhaps, Lichtensteins way of making the image appear even more mass-market -------------associating it with the cheap and prolific comic book industry of the early Sixties. The overall impression we get is to be viewing at a mass-produced image, was unexpected at the time. The artist may have wanted to take the general public aback -------------- giving a fresh look to Disneys cartoon characters. The aim was to simplify art -------------------------- break boundaries between low and upper culture, was daring in the early 1960s.
