Abstaract:
In current bus transport system, there is no any
way to track the current number of vacant seats in
real time. This causes revenue loss for bus depute
as it is unable for them to forecast the vacant seats
in the bus and hence they cannot do the
reservation of those seats in real time also depute
is unable to get real time notification regarding
any mishaps with the bus or the driver. This
project helps the depot to get the real time updates
of seat positions in the bus using GSM technology
also this project helps to provide alert notification
for fire, unauthorized user, theft to depot in real
time basis for this we have used powerful
combination of ARM7 processor, GSM
Technology and sensor systems which together
form a highly efficient bus reservation system for
bus depot the other part of this project is to
provide complete vehicle navigation information
requested by user or any depot also to provide the
regular updated to the next bus stand so as to
display or announce the bus name on stands This
product was developed to monitor the number of
seats occupied in a bus and transmit the same to
the depot at every 5 minute interval. Every seat in
the bus is fixed with pressure sensor. Whenever a
particular seat is occupied, the Controller board
micro-controller senses it and sends the seat
number information via a GSM module. The
input to this G.S.M module is through serial
communication. The receiver uses this data to
display it on the computer monitor at the depot or
it can be directly sent to the central mobile
station. Also the bus will contain the sensors like
Fire, PIR which will detect any misshapes during
the travelling. The same will be informed to the
depot via alert SMS. This project is very much
use full for online reservation of seats
dynamically. The booking agency can allot the
seat matrix at
on the Google Map by using GPS (Global
Positioning System) & GSM (Global Service for

Location on the Google Map whereas, our

Proposed system will show the position of the
vehicle to the depot manager who requests the
location.

1.Introduction:
Now a days lot of people travels through
Daily transport system vehicles and access their
services. The problem that arises is the user as
well as depot dont have the exact information of
the state of vehicle i.e. its exact position. Thats
where our application comes into picture. Real
Time tracking of all vehicles using Global
Positioning System as the name suggests, it uses
GPS to track any vehicles. Our area of
concentration in this project is on tracking
vehicles. It will help both the passengers and the
depot to track the vehicles, to get real time
position of the vehicles, changed routes (If any), it
can also act as an anti-theftapplication by
detecting the exact position of the vehicles. We
are also adding fire sensors to avoid any
misshapes due to fire.
The data from bus unit is collected at depot
unit by depot manager, which further this data is
displayed on stand unit. It will contain the
information about bus and seat vacancies which
will help the people waiting for bus.

2.Literature Survey:
As said above, our proposed system will
show depot real time location of the vehicle
on the Google Map by using GPS (Global
Positioning System) & GSM (Global Service
For Mobile).
The existing system of vehicle tracking
includes the tracking of the vehicle by using

Mobile). GPS and web server for showing the

serve at depot unit.

3.3 System Diagram:

Our system is composed of three parts, bus unit,

stand unit and depot unit.Thse all units help user
to make his journey safe and easy. Each unit is
shown in Figure 1. The GPS tracking is done by
GPS system installed in bus that transmits
location information to the depot unit through
GPRS & GSM networks. The depot unit consist
of personal computer that receives the
information and send it to the stand unit. The
stand unit display the information on LCD screen
fixed on bus stand.
The sensor unit which consist of pressure sensors
installed in each bus which helps to get seat
vacancy information. Fire sensor which is used to
detect any fire in bus which is used for safety
reason of passengers.RPM sensor to detect the
speed of bus and depending on threshold level
depot unit can control the speed of bus

II.GSM Technology

3.1. System Building Blocks:

I.GPS Technology
Global Positioning System (GPS) is a system
composed of a network of 24 satellites of the
United States, which are originally used in
military services, and Later allowed for
commercial use. The satellites periodically
emit radio signal of short pulses to GPS
receivers. A GPS receiver receives the signal
from at least three satellites to calculate
distance and uses a triangulation technique
[1] to compute its two-dimension (latitude
and longitude) position or at least four
satellites to compute its three-dimension
(latitude, longitude, and Altitude) position.
Once a location is computed, it can calculate
an average speed and direction of traveling.
Therefore, GPS is a key technology for giving
device its Position.

3.2.Algorithm
GPS Device receives the GPS co-ordinates
and sends it to the server (depot unit) after
every fixed time. The server receives the
information from the GPS Device and stores
it. The data of a particular vehicle is provided
at stand unit to display. If any sensor produced
output, that particular data is transferred to

GSM (Global System for Mobile

communication) is a digital mobile telephony
system, is used to communicate between each
unit. The information from bus is transferred
depot via GSM network same from depot to
stand unit is done.
This module consist of sim card reader which
helps to keep identity of each bus separately.

III.SENSORS
NPC-1210 Low Pressure Sensor.The
NPC-1210 series of solid-state pressure
sensors are designed to provide a cost
effective solution for applications that require
calibrated performance over a wide
temperature range. These sensors used to
sense the seat vacancy which helps to provide
seat matrix array to passengers.

IV.Fire sensors:
A flame detector is a sensor designed to
detect and respond to the presence of a flame
or fire. Responses to a detected flame depend
on the installation, but can include sounding
an alarm, deactivating a fuel line (such as a
propane or a natural gas), and activating a fire
suppression system. A flame detector can
often respond faster and more accurately than

C.SENSOR:The sensors like fire sensor

and pressure sensor implemented in bus unit,
these are used for safety reason .if censor gets
there threshold level they produce output, this
output is send to depot(server) for further
work.

D. DEPOT (SERVER):
This unit works as a server where all data is
going to save. Received data from bus unit is
transferred to stand unit to display on the lcd
screen at stand unit, which helps to get
information about the bus to passengers.

4.1 Hardware:

GSM device (simcom 900)
Pressure sensors (NPC-1210)
Fire sensors
Server (personal computer)

4.2 Software:
Server:
OS: Windows Server 2003
Firewall: Windows Firewall or
any other firewall.
Database: SQL Server 200

4.3 Tools and Technology:

GPS (Global Positioning
System)

a smoke or heat detector due to the

mechanisms it uses to detect the flame. These
sensors used for safety reason of passengers
4.Implimentation:A.GPS Tracking
Module:The GPS Tracking Module is based
on the
GPS module installed in bus. Thedevice gets
the position of bus from satellite. From that
position we get the latitude, longitude & time.
And we have to send that position to Server
through GSM. This process repeat after every
2 or 5 minutes i.e. set by Admin of the
system.
B. GPS-Tracking Firmware:
The firmware of the GPS Tracking module is
written and compiled using an open source
compiler. The firmware performs three
phases, the initialization, the GPS position
reading, and the GPS data formatted and
transmitted to GSM server via GPRS
networks. The initialization phase prepares
the module for reading and transmitting
location information. It is composed of three
functions. The first function is to initialize the
GPS Device for GPS reading. The second
function is to initialize GPRS/GPS module to
set up parameters to warm up GPS engine, to
make a connection to a GPRS network and to
connect to the GCM server via TCP/IP
socket. The third function is to initialize
MMC module into SPI mode for data
read/write

C.GSM MODEM:
GSM modem is a specialized type of modem
which accepts a SIM card, and operates over
a subscription to a mobile operator, just like a
mobile phone. From the mobile operator
perspective, a GSM modem looks just like a
mobile phone. When a GSM modem is
connected to a computer, this allows the
computer to use the GSM modem to
communicate over the mobilenetwork. While
these GSM modems are most frequently used
to provide mobile internet Connectivity, many

of them can also be used for data read/write.

5. Conclusion & Future Scope:In this

paper we have proposed a GPStracking
system which will track thecurrent position of
the vehicle and show itto the server who
wants to track the vehicle. The system will
reduce the waiting time for travelling. The
GPS Device will send vehicles current
position to the server. The reservation of seats
will be on the way due to the data update after
particular time period.The safety of
passengers is highly pointed in whole project.
