Insight into how the brain forms memories
The firing of a single neuron leads to new memories being
formed. Researchers have finally found a specific region in the brainmedial temporal lobe-that plays a key role in rapidly forming
memories about everyday events. The medial temporal lobe is
associated with episodic memory-the brain's ability to recall
situations like meeting a friend in, say, a mall. Episodic memory logs
such happenings and very rapidly forms new associations in the brain.
People suffering from Alzheimer's and other neurological disorders
have this type of memory affected .Hence the results of a study
published in the journal Neuron on 2-07-2015 has great clinical
significance. The study also found that firing of a single neuron led to
new memories being formed in the human brain. This study was
conducted by Dr.Matias J.Ison from University of Leicester, USA
The Hindu dated 2-7-2015 by Mr.R.Prasad.
Low dose radiation may cause increase in Leukemia.
Exposure to ionizing radiation at high doses causes Cancer.
But there is uncertainty at low doses typically received by radiation
workers and patients undergoing diagnostic radiation procedures. A
land mark study of 308297 radiation workers employed in France,
U.K., and U.S.A. published on line in The Lancet Hematology (21-62015) provides strong evidence of positive association between
protracted low dose radiation exposure and Leukemia. The study
provided strongest support yet for the idea that long term exposure to
low dose radiation increases the risk of Leukemia, although the rise is
.
only minuscule.
