CALCULATIONS
In REG 670 Protection IED, there is a facility available known as base value for
Voltage and Current channels & their ratios. The base/rated value setting enables
the diference between the ratings of protected unit, CT or VT and the Protection to
be compensated. This facilitates easier interpretation of the displayed parameters
i.e. Voltage, Current and Power.
Once the base values a r e k n o w n , the reading from the relay can be directly
read as per unit quantities. A reading of 0.8 Un will mean 80% of the rated voltage
and a reading of 0.8Pn will mean 80% of the rated MVA of the machine.
Protection functions in REG670

1. Generator diferential Protection, 87GA(REG670)

Basic setting Idmin
The basic setting defines the pick-up setting of the diferential protection for
internal faults. The lowest possible value should be chosen to enable it to detect
the worst case faults. However, there can be small diferential current during
normal operation, which may result in tripping.
Recommended setting Idmin = 0.1
IN Pick up Ratio (slope):
The pick-up ratio slope is decisive for the stability of the protection during
through faults. The slope setting should be low enough to make the
protection sensitive to faults when load current is flowing without mal operating
during through faults.

= - (0.5 * 0.234 p.u) = - 0.117 p.u.

= 2.05 = 2.05 p.u

As per the above mentioned setting,

Zone-2 operating MVAR at 0 MW is: Total Z = Xd/2 + Xd = 0.117+2.05 =2.167 p.u
= 1/Z = 1 / 2.167 = 0.4614 p.u.
In terms of MVAR = 0.4614 * 247 = -113.98 MVAR.
Zone-1 operating MVAR at 0 MW is: Total Z = 0.75Xd + Xd/2 = 0.175+1.025 =1.2 p.u
= 1/Z = 1 / 1.2 = 0.8333 p.u.
In terms of MVAR = 0.8333 * 247 = -205.83 MVAR.
Note: As per the Generator capability curve, at 0MW , Machine withstand able MVAR
capability = -80MVAR.
As we have given the ofset, As the MW increases the operating MVR will increases.

46G initiates an alarm as soon as the negative phase sequence current is more than 4%
after a definite time delay of 20 sec (For alarm stage delay of 20 Sec should be
adequate considering the rate at which the temperature of the endangered parts of
rotor rises) and generates a trip based on the programmable curve, initiating Class A
Tripping.

7. Generator Stator Overload, 50OLA(REG670, Only Alarm)

Data from generator manufacturer Armature winding short time thermal
requirements (Stator current Versus Time)- .
Rated current of the generator = IGN = 9050 A
CT Ratio = IN1/IN2 = 10000/5
Rated relay current = IN =5A
The temperature rise measured by the Protection at the rated current of IGN .
Full Load current of the generator will be 9050A
Assuming 110% of the continuous over load capacity (from curve) of the
machine at 95% of nominal voltage, it is recommended to keep a definite time
delay of 10S in definite time delay.

Generator Out of step (POLE SLIP) Protection, 78GA(REG670)

Setting parameters:
ZA - Forward impedance. It marks the end of zone 2.
ZB - Reverse impedance. It marks the beginning of zone 1.
ZC - Impedance of the zone limit. ZC is the end of zone 1 between ZB and ZC and the
beginning of zone 2 between ZC and ZA
Phi - Angle of slipping characteristics and of ZA, ZB and ZC
Warn angle - Rotor angle above which alarm of potential
slipping is given Trip angle - Rotor angle below which trip
signals are issued
N1 Slip of zone 1 - Number of slips for zone 1.ie no of slips before Trip 1 is issued and
signalled
N2 Slip of zone 2 - Number of slips for zone 2.ie no of slips before Trip 2 is signalled
t-Reset - The reset time t-Reset prevents the function from resetting
between two slips providing slip of zone1 or slip of zone 2 is greater
than 1.
Setting considerations:
Generator 247 MVA, 15.75KV,
Xd = transient reactance of the generator = 23.4 %.
XT = Transformer Impedance =14%. GT MVA = 270.
Bus Voltage = 400KV.

Assuming that Fault contribution from grid for fault in 400KV Bus = 40KA.
The short circuit power from the external network without in feed from the protected
Line @400KV Level = System fault MVA

27712

Base Impedance, Zbase (15.75KV, 247MVA) = 15.75x15.75/247

= 1.0 ohm
GT Impedance in primary ohm @ 15.75 KV Side = 0.14*15.75*15.75/270 = 0.128625.
ZA should be set to the impedance between the location of the protection and the offload voltage of the equivalent circuit for the entire power system.
ZA = ZT + Zs
= 0.1286+0.0089 = 0.1375 Ohm
Hence ZA corresponds to set value with respect to Zbase so
ZA to set = ZA calculated / Zbase = 0.1375/1.0 = 0.1375 p.u or 13.75%

ZB should be set to the generator reactance Xd in the reverse direction at the base values.
ZB = -Xd = 15.75^2*0.234/247= 0.235 ohm
This corresponds to
ZB settings = -0.235/ 1.0 = -0.235 p.u or 23.5 %

ZC should be set to the impedance from the location of the protection up to the first bus bar.
ZC

=85% of j XT (Up to the bus bar)

= 0.85 * 0.1286 = 0.10931

Zc settings = 0.1093/ 1.0 = 0.1093 P.u or 10.93%

Max power through the longest Line MVA = KV / XL = 400 / (0.3069 * 293) =
1779.32.
(Assuming that in korba longest line= 293Km and X in /KM = 0.3069)
Impedance corresponding to max power, Z load @15.75 KV () = 15.75 /
1779.32 = 0.1394
Z Load = 0.1394 / Zbase = 0.1394 / 1.0 = 0.1394 .
Calculation of start angle: Start angle: () tan-1 (ZA/Zload) + tan-1
(ZB/Zload)
By Calculating
Za
104.67 deg.

Zload

With Sufficient Margin, to be kept 110 deg.

Angle = System Impedance angle = Tan-1(X/R) = Tan-1(0.3069/0.0267)
= 85.02 deg
(Assuming that X in /KM = 0.3069 and R in /KM = 0.0267)

Zb

Trip angle = 90 deg.

As the Trip angle increases, Zr i.e. width of the lens decreases and the ZR comes towards the
Electrical centre. (Where EG and ES are 180deg out of phase) and angular separation between
generator and system will increase which results for the CB to break at very high voltage
So in safety we are taking the trip angle as 90deg.

11. Generator Backup impedance, 21GA(REG670)

21G is connected from CTs on the neutral side of generator and generator PT. PT location
will be the origin on the R-X diagram. 21G characteristics will be a circle. Setting of the
Backup impedance function will be determined by the short circuit reactance of the Generator
Transformer.
