This heading consists of two parts concerned with the following subject matter:
PART A:
. performing calculations and evaluations involving numbers or quantities which are represented in electric
form, and generating output signals which are non-linear or time related functions of input signals.
. associations of calculating and evaluating operations for particular applications, including simulating specific
processes
PART B:
performing calculations and evaluations using optical beams
Definition
optical: relating to electromagnetic radiation in the infra-red, visible and ultra-violet regions of the spectrum
Explanation of heading subject matter and relationships with other headings
PART A
Performing calculations and evaluations; generating non-linear functions:
Classified here are disclosures concerned with:
. circuits and apparatus for use in performing calculations and evaluations involving numbers or quantities, the
numbers or quantities being represented in the calculating or evaluating operations by corresponding
electric quantities (eg magnitude, frequency or phase of currents or voltages) the result being derived
therefrom by electric or electrodynamic action or by photoelectric interpretations of a beam or beams of
radiation modulated in accordance with parameters of the calculation or functions involved therein, and
obtained by an electric measuring operation
. circuits other than those above, utilizing electric discharge tubes or semi-conductor devices to obtain a variable
output the amplitude of which is a non-linear function of an input, or is a function of an input with respect
to time
Disclosures classifiable here as explained above may relate to complete systems or parts of systems, viz:
. complete systems designed solely for performing calculations and evaluations, in which data is entered by
manual or other personal control, and the result of the calculation or evaluation is displayed
. arrangements designed solely for performing calculations and evaluations upon data, but described without
reference to any complete calculating and evaluating system or to any other specific application
. parts of measuring systems designed primarily for yielding a result due to measurement of two or more
physical quantities, the parts being of interest per se as circuits and apparatus for performing calculations
and evaluations
. parts of control or other systems designed primarily for purposes other than calculating and evaluating, the
parts being of interest per se as circuits and apparatus for performing basic calculations and evaluations,
such as: multiplication; division; differentiation; raising to a power or extracting a root; obtaining a
logarithm or an anti-logarithm
Certain associations for particular purposes:
Classified here are disclosures at a higher level of organisation concerned with performing specialized and
applied computations, in which input electric signals representing variables in a system such as an armament
fire control system, are made to interact in a way which is mathematically determined by the nature of the
system, to produce an output signal of use in controlling or indicating some other variable of the system
The subject matter classified here includes both computations which may be used for monitoring or controlling
an actual system function, and also simulations of specific processes
Excluded are the following, which are classified in other headings:
. circuits and apparatus for use in performing calculations involving numbers, the numbers being represented
in the calculating operations by pulses or by selected circuit pathsG4A, Electric digital data processing
. hybrid computers wherein novelty lies in the association of digital and analogue calculating sectionsG4A,
Electric digital data processing
. analogue storesG4C, Static storage of electric information
. non-linear circuits used for automatic gain control, muting and selectivity control of amplifiers and radio
receiversH3G, Control of amplification; H3Q, Radio receivers &c; H4R, Line transmission systems;
signal processing
. pulse and other non-sinusoidal waveform generators (eg saw-tooth generators), and applications of circuits to
the production of such waveformsH3P, Pulse, logic and switching circuits
. discharge tube and semi-conductor circuits for limiting the amplitude or rate of change of amplitude of a
signal, and clipping or otherwise passing only a part of the instantaneous amplitude range of a
signalH3W, Linear amplifiers; limiters

PART B
Classified here are disclosures concerned with the performance of mathematical operations, such as Fourier
transformation, matrix multiplication, correlation, A/D conversion and Boolean logic operations, by
appropriate manipulation (eg modulation) of suitably organised optical beams
This is the general place for the functional and structural organisation of systems for performing such
operations, and for associations of a plurality of such systems
Excluded are:
. systems for deriving information about an unknown by causing modification or emission of radiation, or of a
beam thereof, in accordance with the unknown and obtaining information therefromG1A, Radiation and
radiation-utilising measurement &c
. optical communication and command systemsH4B, Optical communication
This part also provides for subsystems, elements and procedures peculiar to the systems covered and is residual
for such matter of general applicability when not covered by other headings
Excluded are:
. elements and subsystems for manipulating or otherwise controlling optical beamsG2F, Controlling light;
G2J, Optical apparatus &c
This part is residual for associations of such systems with other apparatus, and for disclosures concerned with
particular applications of such systems
Excluded are:
. optical recognition of a pattern by optical comparison with standard patternsG4R, Recognising character
forms &c
. optical location systems using collimated radiation, and signal processing thereforH4D, Wave-energy
position finding &c
The exclusion references listed in this heading are not exhaustive. Reference should be made to the appropriate
general heading/s for processes, materials, elements or devices which may be more widely applicable than can
appropriately be classified in this heading
Relationship with the Universal Indexing Schedules (heading U1S)
U1S is used, subject to its indexing rules, to record uses and applications of inventions classified here, except
insofar as these are inherent in the assigned classifying terms of this heading.
Operative dates for Key entries
The operative dates of the terms in this heading are:
1. for terms annotated by a marginal code, that of the Edition corresponding to that code
2. for all other classifying terms, that of Edition A
3. for all other indexing terms, earlier than that of Edition A
