Memorial For LAquila

First project, Year 3

LAquila has approximately 30 earthquakes a month, but usually

around 1.5 Richter scale. In 2009 a disastrous earthquake at 6.5
Richter scale struck the heart of the city which devastated most of the
architecture and killed 309 people. Most died in their homes due of a
lack of warning from the authorities, and those in charge of sending
warnings are now imprisoned for their impotence.
I visited the site in 2012, after a brief time spent walking around the
site and talking to the habitants, I immediately started understanding
that the people were very frustrated with the government for the lack of
effort to rebuild their homes. 3 years pass, yet people were still displaced
into temporary homes and were no closer to moving back into the city.
The brief was to design a monument or a memorial that signifies or
records a significant event as part of the cities collective memory so that
the events that had happened could never be forgotten and to further
the resilience of the community and raise moral and spirit.

In this short project I address many issues; mourning for the dead,
preparing the citizens of LAquila for the future and making the
community stronger by creating a method for new friendships and
connections to be formed.

THE STAGES OF THE SCULPTURE

The concept originated from an old toy

I had. The little wooden person would
collapse when the tension in the wire was
released. From this I developed my idea for
the sculpture.

The structure here is erect, no sign of Earthquake, morale is high.

Here the structure is in rubble after an earthquake, representing the

earthquake.
The idea is to create unease within the people, keeping them alert and
aware of the earthquake prone area they live in. People will not want to
see the rubble, so they will go and stand on the touch pads to erect the
statue.

People will ask each other for help to stand on the touch pads, this will
give reason for people to make new friends by creating the situation
and the moment for them to open in conversation. Once all 5 touch
pads are stood upon, two other people will need to help erect it by
untangling the wires.

The best materials to use for a memorial

is the materials that make up the
memories of the city itself, the rubble
created from the earthquake and the
steel used to brace the buildings. A
collaboration of these including broken

Once all the touch pads have someone standing on them, the statue will
start to erect itself, the people would need to stand on the touch pads
until the statue has fully erected itself, while someone is helping untie or
positioning the cubes so they dont get in a twist.

instruments I saw within the rubble to

life in LAquila.

THE PHASES

SEISMOMETER

This is a seismometer I built with a breadboard and an

Arduino and Ethernet shield.
The frequency of earthquakes is between 1 - 20 Hz, but
with even the heaviest weight the resonant frequency
was in the KHz.
So to reduce the resonant frequency and get some useful
signals, I took some washers slapped them on a bolt and
some nuts and experimented. I used a Oscilloscope with
FFT and changed the weight on the tip of the film until
frequencies of around 40Hz were the largest.
A Charge Amp takes the charge across a capacitor and
translates it into a voltage. If you know your electronics
you can see that it is essentially an integrator, which
prevents the charge across the Piezo film, which acts like
a capacitor, from discharging quickly.
This allows you to turn it into a stable voltage signal.
The signal coming out of the charge amp section is an
AC wave floating on 2.5Vdc. Since the amplitude of the
wave is the same size when it swings to the positive end
as the negative end, you can get more use from the ADC
in the Arduino by amplifying only the positive waves.

We can do this by chopping off the bottom half of the wave

with a diode and biasing it so that the diode is just-just turned
on.
Now you have a waveform sitting on 0Vdc with only the positive
peaks of the signal being read by the ADC.
That was the easy part, after that I connected it to the
Arduino. The programming was probably the heftiest portion
of this project, these diagram should help explain how the
programming part works.
The image to the right shows the a free web page which is
recording the earthquakes, and by earthquakes I mean the
table shaking. The web page is free to use with an Arduino
Board.

FINAL IMAGE

THE EAGLES NEST

Final project, Year 3

LAquila after the disastorous earthquake was left in ruins, buildings

collapsed, and places where people used to meet and socialise like shops,
cafes and bars closed down. The citizens were pushed away from the
town, some social houses were made 10 miles from the city, and some
were sent to different cities. Friends were seperated and dispursed. The
city itself was left in ruins, some shops opened and the government is
doing very little to help rebuild the city because of the great cost.
My brief was to design a workshop that taught people how to program
and connect arduino boards so that they could help rebuild their homes
and city through modern technology. Arduino is a tool for making
computers that can sense and control more of the physical world
than your desktop computer. Its an open-source physical computing
platform based on a simple microcontroller board, and a development
environment for writing software for the board. Using the arduino
boards they could build 3D printers so that they could ancient details
within buildings that were damaged.

THE FEATHERS ON THE EAGLE

Thermobimetals are smart materials that respond dynamically to

temperature change.
Like the coil in a thermostat, these metals bend due to the two different
types of metal glued together. One of the metals expands to heat close
to room temperature and one does not, thus giving the bend.
When the sunlight heats up the metal, they bend down closing the glass
beneath protecting it from direct sunlight and solar gain, at indirect
sunlight, the feathers open up allowing more light to penetrate
through.

MADEN GROUP JULY/NOVEMBER

2013
These next pages consist of the work I have done during my time
working in Maden Group.
During my time here I worked on many different stages of a project. I
managed the project of a hair salon under supervision from first stages
of design to the last stages of construction. During my time here I
also worked in many other projects producing 3D Models, renders and
Photoshoping of final renders. Here I improved vastly on my graphic
skills, rendering and making models.

I took part in two international competitions; The Sydney container

vacation house by AC-CA and the Design for Death Architecture by
Design Boom,, and a national competition for which we had to design
a memorial for the women who died during the 1999 war.
We were short listed for the top 50 out of over 2300 contestants for
Design For Death competitions.

The aim of this International Competition is to design a

Container Vacation House overlooking the Bondi Beach
waterfront in Sydney using used freight container. This
competition hopes to achieve the following:
-Encourage and reward design excellence at a small scale
which integrates function, structure, details and the spirit
of waterfront home.
-Generate the discussion and ideas about the reuse of
freight container modules and encourage the employment
of sustainable design in all aspects of the proposal.
In this project, we worked in a team of four, and I was the
sole graphics designer.

Caring for the dead is an important part of
any society, and how it is done reflects the
prevailing culture. As societies evolve, the
customs and traditions surrounding funerals
and memorialization also change. This
competition asks architects, designers, and
creative talents worldwide to re-think and
re-imagine death care for the future. It seeks
to challenge and change perceptions about
the ways in which families honor, remember
and celebrate the lives of their loved ones,
unveiling the next-generation designs for
requiems of the future in the place of repose,
sites of bereavement and remembrances.

ESTABLISHED NGO

THIS CITY OF OURS

During the time I was living in Kosovo, I saw a

predominant problem with the infrastructure of the city
as a result of the recent war in 1998-99. The country
started rebuilding rapidly but without the proper
regulations and management within the government
and suitable master planning, the spurt of growth has
now started to over ill nurture its inhabitants. Towns
and municipalities are now overgrown and have very

little recreational spaces and those few and very modest

spaces are deprived of any sort of entertainment.
I established a Non-Governmental Organisation called
This City of Ours and decided to use my knowledge
to design a cheap urban space and try and present my
ideas to the government for funding and landowners
for charitable donations. This organisation aimed to

TO PROVIDE URBAN - JANUARY/APRIL 2014

design; smart, social, urban spaces to solve the very

dominant problem with the lack of public spaces in
Kosovo.
This particular project focused on Fushe Kosova, a
municipality 4 miles from the capital. This municipality
has a very rapidly rising population, over 10,000 new
apartments were built in the last 6 years and has no

recreational or public spaces within walking distance.

Children played in the streets and walkways by the
roads were blocked by parked cars.
The inhabitants urgently needed a park where children
could play, people could meet and go to unwind.

I saw a good president in New York by Jannette Sadik

Khan and this inspired me to design this solution for
Kosovo. I saw that despite the massive growth of New
York, not many changes were made to the way the city
was used. New York streets were still very dangerous and
cramped, 300,000 people used Broadway a day and all
cramped on the side walks. there were no seating areas in
for the public until Janette Khan proposed an easy and

very cheap solution, to block the roads, paint them and

place chairs and tables so people in the city could have
a place to sit and relax while they were shopping. This
proved extremely effective, reducing pedestrian injuries
by 35% and increasing travel times by at least 17%.
Because of this, 5 new stores opened because the more
people on foot means better business and even retail
rents doubled.

I have presented to the Mayor of Fush-Kosova, British from this project.

Embassy, US AID, UNDP, IPKO and many other
companies for funding but after tireless determination, I
received full funding from the mayor Burim Berisha and
free Internet and telecommunications from IPKO. The
project is on hold until 2016.
This section of the portfolio includes some of the pages

The letter written by the Mayor of Fushkosova

to declare participation within the project and
ask third parties to invest funds in making the
project a reality.

After studying the project, I have found that the

project will provide a solution to the present social, economic and environmental issues within
the municipality of Fushe-Kosovo with an emphasis on the youth of Fushe Kosovo, the playground, pedestrian space and entertainment
potential, the design provides the inhabitants
of the wider Fushe Kosovo area with an opportunity to mix , play, create and gather, making
the community stronger and consequently improving the desire to respect public space and set
a precedent for the rest of the municipalities.

THE URBAN PROBLEM

IDENTITY

SECURITY

ENTERTAINMENT

The desire to maintain a positive conception of

oneself has been regarded as a central motive by
many writing about the self (e.g. James, 1890 Gecas,
1982), specifically within social identity theory
(Tajfel, 1978; Hogg and Abrams, 1988;Abrams,
1992). With regard to the environment,Korpela
shows how favourite environments can support
self-esteem. Children described the sense of
positive self-esteem they gained from being in
their own rooms during times of distress. Through
living in an historic town a person can feel a sense
of pride by association (Lalli, 1992; Uzzell,1995).

The center of Fush-kosova is seen as the main

roundabout which connects most of the cities
in Kosovo with Pristina but also other countries
like Albania with the new motorway. The roads
are layed out with 1 meter wide pedestrian
pavements which are usually entirely blocked
by parked cars pushing the pedestrians onto the
road, endangering the life of the pedestrians.
Homes and urban spaces with a good urban
design are generally more secure. Take for
example a Cul De Sac where all the homes
around it can see one another, where in case of
a break in, they can help each other by calling
the police. Where as in Fushekosova, and
generally all of Kosovo, you cannot see past the
house next to you.

Other than coffee shops (if you can call that

entertainment) there are no other activities you
can get involved in within Fushekosova. The
townspeople have no squares, parks or green
spaces to dwell and call their own. There are no
group activities and if one is not from this town
and it is very hard to meet people and make
new friends.

On the images below, you can see two similar

houses; one with a well kept front garden and one
that inst. By looking at the way the people living
there have presented their homes, you have in
your mind unconsciously already imagined what
kind of people to expect from each house as they
have displayed their identity by decorating their
front garden.
This is also true in the larger extent such as the
town square, or the public streets within a town. It
is critical for a town to have an identity to represent
the town and the people.
The train station before the war used to be the most
popular and most active place in Fushekosova.
There were very popular coffeehouses and was
the main station that connected the Balkans to
Kosovo. It was always busy and swarming with
youth. FusheKosova was known for its train station
which gave the people of the town an identity.
Now the whole area close to the train station has
dropped in value and very rarely people go down
there to gather.

FusheKosova needs its own Piazza or square

where people gather outside to sit, play, read,
exercise, relax and unwind away from the busy
streets. A place where the people of Fushekosova
can call their own, a place to satisfy all ages and
all need with the luxury of security for children
and lighting for when its dark.

THE THREE MAIN PSYCHOLOGICAL

AND SOCIO-PHYSICAL NEEDS FOR
A PERSON TO FEEL CONTENT IN
THEIR URBAN ENVIRONMENT.

This project aims to be self sustainable, it is intended

to earn its own money for the maintenance, and I
was able to receive a lot of help to make this a reality.
The park aims to raise the economical value of the
area significantly by generating revenue through
rent. It aims to increase the security and increase
the entertainment factor by introducing; a niche
cafe, mountain bike track, seating with electricity,
WI-FI Internet access, a park and more lighting to
illuminate the area during the night. The revenue
created by renting the bike tracks and the cafe will
produce enough money to keep maintenance and
some to save for future expansion.

There is a need for a square that will provide

entertainment, a place where you can play
games like chess and twister with strangers, so
that through the play, you may make a new
friend. A place to meet friends without having
to sit in a cafe and spend money, a place to
exercise without having to pay for the gym,
a place where there is a climbing frame for
children and sports activities, a place where
you can also be connected to the INTERNET
through WI-FI and share the photos you are
taking on the swings, zip wires or slides. a place
where there is also food and drink.

Although, for a park, the site needs to have safer

has to be diverted and most importantly for this

roads around the whole area, the resin is cheap
and highly increases breaking effect-ability.

playgrounds for children because of the

small children. Older children who would

play vigorous games must have places
especially set aside for them; and, since play is
a fundamental need, playgrounds should be
provided for every child as much as schools.

FusheKosova has no recreational playgrounds

for children, apart from the dangerous streets
which are not paved. Children from a very
early age are pushed into cafes and arcade
rooms where their creativity, imagination,
exercise and the promotion of problem
solving skills are severely compromised.

DIRT BIKE TRACK

CLIMBING WALL AND OBSTICLE

COURSE

It is important to have vigorous and tougher games to challenge even the adults. A dirt bike track can be very tough and can really
challenge your athletic abilities, and as humans, we need competition in our life to move forward and evolve. This bike track can be
set as a goal for every child, in hopes of one day completing it. There would be a shorter and easier track for the younger child also
seperate from the hard track.
The track can make space for anyone wishing to make a business of renting mountain bikes for the sport.

Professionals recognize that the social skills that children develop on the playground become
lifelong skill sets that are carried forward into their adulthood. Independent research concludes
that playgrounds are among the most important environments for children outside the home.
Most forms of play are essential for healthy development, but free, spontaneous playthe kind
that occurs on playgroundsis the most beneficial type of play.
Children have devised many playground games and pastimes. But because playgrounds are
usually subject to adult supervision and oversight, young childrens street culture often struggles
to fully thrive there. Research by Robin Moore (Childhoods Domain: Play and Place, 1986) has
clearly shown that playgrounds need to be balanced with marginal areas that (to adults) appear
to be derelict or waste ground but to children they are areas that they can claim for themselves,
ideally a wooded area or field.
It is important for children to have their own privacy, so the obstacle course can give children an
enclosure from outside world, but a parent can alway see inside if they come close enough and
look through the gaps between the wood cladding.

Caffe

People of Kosovo love coffee, we have coffee in the morning, coffee at

break time or for lunch and even coffee before bed. So to give people
everything they need at the park a coffee shop is essential.
But this would be no ordinary coffee shop you get in Fushkosova, this
would be, in a word, evolutionary to the lifestyle in this town. It will be
a priority for the coffee shop to promote a healthy lifestyle, with healthy
foods and drink.
On top of this, the person who will rent this carriage for a coffee shop
will also have the responsibility of looking after the whole park, picking
up the litter every morning and reporting any problems to me. The rent
will/should go into an account set for the growth and the evolution of
the park and the humanitarian team that will be set up with this project
who will go around Fushkosova, fixing problems that are reported by
the people to the website.

This section of the portfolio includes drawings and 3D images that I have produced for my
current employer at DK Architects. The architecture practice was established in 2008 by
RIBA Chartered Architect Nadir Khan. For the first three months of working at the practice
I was the only employee then a senior technician was hired. The practice is very successful
landing some large projects such as a restaurant at the Hoover Building in London.

Working for a small company and also being the only employee for the first three months has
allowed me to develop my knowledge of how an architectural practice really functions. It has
allowed me to learn first-hand the handling process of projects because all work was going
through me at some point, so I was able to analyse the amount of work needed and the quality
of work required.
Since October, my technical skills have improved drastically, I am now very confident in
producing drawings to a professional standard and am able to gather, produce and prepare
works to that comply British design standards and regulations.

These drawings I have produced while working on 50 Palatine Road

project. This project consisted of the refurbishment of a building and
the conversion of two domestic houses into three flats. In this project I
drew all of these drawings and I had alot of input in the design of the
project also, the project was lead by the head architect and I was
supervised throughout. Here I learned alot about structural and
technical drawings and how building control drawings were produced
and presented and also how to work with accordance to British building
regulations.

The following drawings and renders have all been drawn by me with the guidence and close
supervision of the head architect.

TIME CONSUMED WEAPONS- AUGUST 2011

This was an installation I did in the centre of Prishtina as a response to the

shooting of the police man on the border of Kosovo and Serbia. There are still
many unlicenced weapons in Kosovo. I was published on 2 newspapers and 3 TV
channels for this installation.

Newspaper Translation: Time consumed weapons an installation

by Qendrim Gjata an architecture student studying in Oxford, now
on holiday in Kosovo. He has created an installation as a reflection
on the illegal weapons within family feueds. This installation was
displayed today at the Mother Tereza Boulevard.
