PEJU PROVINCE
Wine, Art, Music and Pairings Await
Once you pull off Highway 29 south of St. Helena into the artistically planted and pruned
grounds of Peju Province Winery, you know youve come across something special. The estate
grounds are an oasis of manicured gardens, fountains, art and architecture. And, inside the wellappointed tasting room, Pejus wines speak for themselves.
An Evolution of Varietals
When owner and founder Tony Peju bought the 30-acre property in 1983, he figured he
might as well make wine with the 22 acres of vineyards planted thereCabernet Sauvignon and
Colombard. But he didnt know a thing about winemaking, according to Tasting Room
Ambassador Joey Tipton. That first batch went right down the drain.
After some education and a little time, Peju made a second batch of Cabernet Sauvignon,
which ended up winning double golds and other awards at wine competitions.
The Peju familyTony, wife Herta and daughters Lisa and Arianabegan selling their wine
out of thir garage. They completed the grand tasting room in 2003, a design conceived by Tony
Peju before he even purchased the property. An early drawing of his vision graces each label of
Peju wine.

Judds Hill Winery Offers Bottle Blending Day Camp For Groups Everywhere
There are a million reasons to visit the Napa Valley: the wine, the
food, the scenery, the teambuilding Well, that last one may not
have been high on your list, but if you are part of an organization that
occasionally has offsite planning meetings or team-building
excursions then you should definitely keep Napa top of mind. One
Napa winery in particular, Judds Hill Winery and MicroCrush, has
been at the forefront of creating innovative excursions to entertain
and educate groups of all sizes for years.
In 2009, the Finkelstein family of Judds Hill had the forwardthinking idea of creating a Bottle Blending Day Camp experience
(BBDC for short), during which visitors to their winery, located at the
southern end of Napas Silverado Trail, can actually craft their own,
personal, Napa Valley blend. The wines used for this blending
experience currently include barrel lots Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot
Cabernet Franc, and Petite Verdot, all from Napa Valleys
extraordinary 2014 vintage.
Judds Hill specializes in making small lots of hand-crafted wines
for their Judds Hill label, and for dozens of their Custom MicroCrush
clients. It can take years to convert clusters of grapes into a ready-todrink bottle of red wine. Blending finished wine, however, is a vital
part of the wine making process that can be accomplished in a
relatively short time.
These BBDC experiences are led by extremely knowledgeable and
passionate wine educators and take about two hours to complete.
During the session, a wine educator will guide blenders through the
intricacies of creating a wine best suited to the tastes of the blender,
explaining and demystifying the process along the way. Once a
favored cuve has been decided upon and a name is chosen, the
newly minted wine-blenders will complete the process by hand-
28
bottling, labeling and spinning foil capsules over the bottle necks.
The wine is then ready to take home the same day!
Although these blending sessions are scheduled regularly
throughout the week for small groups, the Judds Hill BBDC
experience is also a wonderful outing for groups ranging in size from
20 to 250. With a larger group, the participants are divided into
teams that compete to craft the best blend as judged by an expert
panel. The winning blend is bottled and given to all participants to
take with them that day. If your group is in the Bay area but cant
quite make it up to Napa, the folks at Judds Hill have a mobile
option that brings the blending session to you! A team collaboration
over a custom cuvee is sure to be a lively and memorable group
experience. For more details visit juddshill.com or contact the
winery by calling (707) 255-2332 or writing to info@juddshill.com.

APRIL IN CARNEROS
Where Everyones A Vip
Tickets are on sale
April in Carneros, where everyones a VIP, will be wining
and dining their guests throughout the Carneros Appellation.
One great event, 15 award-winning wineries, 15 great Wine
Country experiences and live entertainment for two full days.
This years April in Carneros takes place on Saturday and
Sunday, April 16 and 17 from 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. each
day. Tickets are on sale now for $75 per person and $15 per
person for designated drivers. Advance tickets may be
purchased at www.carneroswineries.org through Friday, April
15th or at each winery during the weekend event.
April in Carneros is always the celebration of spring
throughout the Carneros Appellation, according to Joe
Ohman, Board President. This historic region is widely
known for Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and sparkling wines,
however, there is so much more, says Ohman.
The only appellation in Wine Country that can boast the
accolades of both the Sonoma and Napa soil and climate is
the Carneros region at the southern end of each county.
Known primarily as an excellent Chardonnay and Pinot Noir
growing region, the Carneros appellation is also becoming
famous for such surprises as Grenache, Merlot and Petite
Sirah and home to two large and prestigious sparkling houses.
Fourteen wineries from the region will be participating at
this years April in Carneros event, including Bonneau Wines,
Ceja Vineyards, Cline Cellars, Gloria Ferrer, Homewood
Winery, Jacuzzi Family Vineyards, Keating Wines, Larson
Family Winery, Meadowcroft Wines, Poseidon Vineyard/
Obsidian Ridge Winery, Robledo Family Winery, Schug
Carneros Estate, Starmont Winery (participating Sunday
ONLY), Tin Barn Vineyards and Ty Caton Vineyards.
New this year is to treat each guest as a VIP by providing
the best possible experience possible. In addition to
exceptional wine tasting throughout the region, there will be
enhanced food tastings, local cheeses, olive oils, chocolates,
food and wine pairing, winemaker interactions, possibly
barrel tastings and new releases introduced. This will be a true
Wine Country experience through Carneros.
Proceeds from April in Carneros benefit the viticulture
scholarship funds of Santa Rosa Junior College and Napa
Valley College.
Visit the website www.carneroswineries.org for tickets and
more information.

Wineology
Champagne is priced lower than one made entirely from the best
grapes grown in a single, rare year of superior weather, which is when
Vintage Champagne is made, indicated by a specific year stated on the
label. Finally, if the term cuve is on the label, it denotes the wine
came from the highest quality juice from the first pressing of grapes.
For more fine points of French Champagne, savor these tidbits:
French Champagne can be sold by producers who do not grow
grapes of their own and who, instead, purchase grapes to make
Champagne. These producers are Ngociants, and the letters NM
(Ngociant Manipulant) will be in small print on the label indicating
the Champagne was made with purchased grapes.
If they grow their own grapes, the product is called Grower
Champagne, and the letters RM (Rcoltant Manipulant) will appear.
The letters RC (Rcoltant Cooprateur) indicate the producer is a
member of a cooperative that makes and sells the Champagne under
the producers name.
If all the grapes of the cooperative are pooled together and sold as
a cooperative brand, the label will indicate CM (Cooprative
Manipulant).
MA (Marque dAcheteur) means the brand is not a grower or a
producer, or a cooperative, but an outside party.
ND (Ngociant Distributeur) appears on the label when a wine
merchant is selling the Champagne under its own name.
One last thing to remember when shopping for Champagne and
sparkling wines: terminology used to describe the level of dryness
can be confusing. Particularly unexpected is the use of the term
Extra-Dry, which, in the lingo of Champagne, means a small
amount of sweetness is detectablejust the opposite of what you
might think. Heres how Champagne terms translate:
Brut Nature or Extra Brut has less than six grams per liter of sugar,
sometimes stated as 0.6% residual sugar. (Extreme dryness.)
Brut has up to 15 grams of sugar per liter, the most popular
Champagne style. Sweetness may not be obvious because it is
balanced with high acidity. (Normal dryness.)
Extra-Dry or Extra-Sec has 12 to 20 grams per liter of sugar.
(Some noticeable sweetness.)
Sec has 17 to 35 grams per liter of sugar. (Medium sweetness.)
Demi-Sec has 33 to 50 grams per liter. (High sweetness.)
Doux has over 50 grams of sugar per liter5% residual sugar.
(Extreme sweetness.)
