lntroduction

lntroduction
The DEBEG9216 incorporatesa battery charger, which is optimizedfor automatic
trickle chargingand a switchboardfor the connectionof all AC and DC consumers
of a ship's radio station. To fulfil the correspondingIMO regulationsthe DEBEG
9216 has an integratedswitch-overfacility to supply DC consumerseitherfrom the
internalchargingunit in conjunctionwith the reservebattery or via the connected
power supply DEBEG9207. ln the event of a failure of the ship's main and
emergency generator, all DC consumers will be automatically or manually
(dependingof the mode switch 53) switched over to the reserve radio battery
which must have a capacityfor at leastone hour').
ln additionthe unit incorporatesan automaticswitch-overfacility which ensures
that AC consumers(e.g. SATCOM-A stations)are suppliedfrom the battery by an
externalDC/AC converterin case of mainsfailure.
The DEBEG9216 is designedto chargelead batteriesas a standard.lf DIP switch

Operation

3.2.1 Trickle Charge * Battery Operation

Trtckle Charge mode:
ff the mode switch 53 is set to Trickle Charge + Battery Operation position, the
trickle charge mode is working as long as the ship's mains supply is present.
DC consumersare generallysuppliedby the chargingunit and will be supported
additionallyby the connectedbatteriesin case of temporaryhigherload.
According to the load and the battery voltage different charging states will be
performedautomaticallyas follows:
1. ff the battery voltagedropsjust below 24.5 V {25,O V} 126.0Vl or the load
exceeds3O A the chargingprocessstarts. lt starts always with the maximum
chargingcurrent. This currentwill be reducedin four steps when the voltage
level of the battery increases. The chargingprocessis interruptedat a battery
voltage of 28.2V {28,0 V} 129.2Vl.
2. lf the load exceeds7 A, the output voltagewill reacha value where the battery
current becomeszero. At this stage all DC consumersare suppliedby the charging unit only. Dependingon the load, this conditionwill be achievedat a
battery voltage between 26.5 to 28.2 V {26,5 to 28,O V} 126.5to 29.2Yl.
3. At a load ot7 A or less,the chargingprocessis interruptedat a battery voltage
ot 28.2V {28,0 V} t29.2 VI. The DC consumersare suppliedby the battery
only. The dhargingprocess is started again.when the voltage has dropped
below 24.5 V {25,O V} t26.0 Vl.

3.2.2 Power Supply Operation + Battery Full Charge

Battery Full Charge mode:
Batterieshave to be fully chargedat certainintervalsto assurea maximum lifetime.
In this mode batterieswill be chargedup to lQoo/oof their capacity.
After 336 hours [255 hoursl {336hours} of operation a full charge request is
initializedby the internalchargingprocessor
1. ff the operationswitch is in Battery Full Chargepositionthe chargingprocess
starts immediately.
2. lf the operation switch is in Trickle Charge position the green LED Battery Full
Charge(14) indicatesby flashingthe demandof a full chargeprocess. In that
case the operationswitch 53 (11)should be set to BatteryFull Chargewithin
one week.
The green Battery Full ChargeLED (14) changesfrom flashing to permanentlight
when the full chargeprocesshas been started.
It always starts with maximumchargingcurrentwhich was determinedfor the used
battery capacityby the DIP switch 310112duringthe set-upprocedure.
At a battery voltage of 28.8 V 129.0 Vl {29.O V} the charging current will be
reducedto a lower level. This final chargingprocessis stoppedafter 6 hours /3

When this full charge state is reached the green LED Battery Full Charge (14l.
extinguishes.
For installationswithout the external power supply DEBEG9207 it might be
necessaryto switch to the TrickleChargemode during the full charge process due
(e.g.if MF/HFradiotelephone
