university building was set to be built on the site to help preserve
the ruins.

greatly advanced the frontiers of science and technology and made
significant contributions to the peace and prosperity of mankind.
First awarded in 1985, the Japan Prize reached their 21st
anniversary in 2005, and the presentation ceremony was held on
April 20. While the scope of the prize encompasses all categories
of science and technology, each year two categories are designated
for presentation of that years prize. This year the Japan prize
was awarded in recognition of the achievements of three
researchers from Japan and the United states. Recipients of the
prize are presented with a certificate and a medal, as well as a
monetary award of 50 million yen.
The two categories selected for recognition this year were
Information and Media Technology and cell Biology.
Approximately 3,700 scientific researchers around the world were
asked to nominate candidates for the prize. A selection committee
of 15 Japanese experts began evaluating the nominations in June
2004. Their selection of three researchers in the two categories
was announced in January 2005 bringing the total number of
laureates to 58 from 13 different countries since the prize was
first implemented.
The recipient of the Japan prize in this years Information and
Media technology category was Makoto Nagao, President of the
National Institute of Information and Communications
Technology. A specialist in technology, Nagao is known around
the globe for his research into character recognition and image
processing. He got his start at Kyoto University, and earned his
PhD there. Nagao was later granted a professorship at the
Graduate School of Engineering at Kyoto University where he

pursued research in natural language processing, and has gone

on to become a leader in the development of Japanese-English
machine translation. His early research helped build the foundation
for the commercial machine translation systems in use at many
companies today.

The Humour Corner

by Eduardo Teddy Abello & Donald Sym Smith
Indian, but not stupid
While riding one day a cowboy met an Indian riding along with a
dog and a sheep and began a conversation.
Cowboy: Hey, cool dog you got there. Mind if I speak to him?
Indian: Dog no talk.
Cowboy: Hey dog, hows it going?
Dog: Doin all right.
Indian: Look of shock.
Cowboy: Is this Indian your owner? pointing at the Indian.
Dog: Yep
Cowboy: How does he treat you?
Dog: Real good. He walks me twice a day, feeds me great food,
& takes me to the lake once a week to play.
Indian: Look of total disbelief.
