Scripture reading : John 11:1-2

Earlier we studied about
Believers life from the life of Martha
Importance of the Anointing of LJC by Mary
Now from life of Lazarus.
As we read in 1:18
- LJC has revealed the unseen God to us
- LJC has revealed the His Glory through signs (2:11)
- There are seven signs in Gospel according to John
o at Cana
2:1-11
o Healing officials son
4:43-54
o Healing the lame man
5:1-15
o Feeding the 5000
6:1-15
o Walking on water
6:16-24
o Healing the blind man
9:1-41
o Rising of Lazarus
11:1-16
I thought the last miracle was healing the ear of
Malcus the slave of high priest.
This is recorded only in Luke but no other
gospels and has no mention in John (ear is cut but
not the healing).
As recorded in John Rising of Lazarus is the last
sign.
Is this important incident?
Yes. Doctrinally and for spiritual learning there
are many truths in these passages.
We will concentrate on the relation that Lazarus
enjoyed with LJC.
Vs 1: Bethany a village.
Martha and Mary belong to this village
A man named Lazarus is sick
o Ask the one who is reading this for the first
time
o There may be some relation between Martha
and Mary but who is this Lazarus?
o Martha and Mary may be they were known
well to the 1st century believers but who is
this Lazarus?
o You get no clue. There must be some reason.
o When LJC visits Bethany in Luke 10:38
who receives Him and His followers?
Martha and Mary.

Where is Lazarus? What could be the age of

Lazarus? He would be young enough that he
was already married and was living with his
family in the same village but separately.
o Martha and Mary were still staying in the
paternal home.
o And Martha was the elder than Mary
o That explain why Martha received Him but
not Lazarus and Mary.
o 1st century believers knew who Martha and
Mary were.
o John introduces who Lazarus is in verse 2
Vs 2: Lazarus
Brother of Mary. Who Mary?
Who anointed Lord and wiped his feet with her
hairs in future chapter 12.
Lazarus is introduced on the basis of the relations
that his sisters have with the Lord.
Vs 3: Lord, behold, he whom thou lovest is sick.
Who is Lazarus?
The one whom LJC loved.
May be he was absent because he had no
interest???? Dont we know LJC came for the
lost sheeps.
Dont we see our elders showing more of the
effection for those who dont appear
frequently in the fellowship?
May be. Im not sure.
May be he followed LJC very closely but is
missed by gospel writers. I dont know.
BUT I know one thing LJC loved Lazarus.
This is confirmed in Vs 5.
When LJC receives this message His reaction
involves
Two comments
o Sickness is not unto death
He will succumb to the sickness
Sickness and death are the tools of the
master of this world
His death will not be the end of the
incident
Death will not have final say
o For the glory of God
The final outcome will be LIFE
o

LIFE will manifest the glory of Son of

God
It will dethrone the master of this world
Father will be glorified by the glory that
the Son will receive.
Everything that Son does is only for the
glory of the Father.
Everything that Father does is only for
the glory of the Son.
WHY? LJC said, I and Father are one.
WHY must Lazarus die?
This is last sign that is recorded
in John
This is the major event
Event that will finally establish who
is LJC
The Event that will prove
that LJC is the life and
resurrection .
HE is the one who has ultimate
control over DEATH and LIFE.
Staying back for two more days
o This is a deliberate thing done by
LJC so that the scene may
be ready where Father will be
glorified.
Vs 14: LJC said plainly
o Lazarus is sleeping and the time has come to
wake him up.
o 10:24 Jesus is asked by the Jews to tell
them plainly if He be the Christ.
o Now answer to their question starts from here
o Every word that proceeds from mouth of LJC
o Every act of LJC
o Everything is now happening to reveal the
glory of the Father.
o Signs that never happened in Israel would
happen only to reveal the glory of the Lord.
o Glory of the Lord will be now revealed.

Cried with a Loud voice, Lazarus,

come forth.
Why call by Name?
John 5:28-29
1 Thess 4:16
With His call all that are dead will
rise up. And for them time has not
yet come.
11:44 He that was dead came forth.
When man died before ascension of
LJC what happened?
Spirit went to hades or paradise
Body that came from earth went back
to earth.
When Lazarus died his spirit was
separated and body became earth.
When LJC called him forth, what
happened? Life was poured back into
the body as it happened in the garden
of Eden.
This is possible only by GOD
Himself.
Who is LJC? God Himself.
God the Father was glorified by the
Son who came from His bossom 1:18
God the Son was glorified by the
Father by giving Him the most
exalted Name LJC
Every knee shall bow and every
tongue shall confess
Rising dead Lazarus was the
presentation of the truth He is the
only begotten of the Father
He and Father are one.
Is 40:5 From birth of LJC to His ascension
what was He doing on earth?
He was revealing the glory of the Lord.
This time in Bible study I would like to
talk about the Glory of God do not miss
it.

John 1:14 LJC was the Glory of the
God revealed.

The narration of GOD WORD

relation by John is slowly steady
changed to FATHER SON.
The most intimate relation because
they are one.
