History of Childrens Ward

The Childrens Ward was open on December 9th, 1960 by Eunice Lady
Oakes, who was the major contributor at the time. Funds were also
donated by other community groups especially the Crippled Childrens
Fund.The ward was constructed by Public Works Department. The Hospital
School was established in 1979, the Family Room was constructed by the
Roman Catholic Diocese in 1994 and the Childrens ward Education Center
was established in December 2004.
Staff Development
. Mrs. Patricia Miller Brown completed course in Child Health Care in
1988
. Mrs. Caffiene Brice Jn. Jacques completed Post Basic Certificate in
Paediatric Nursing in 1994
. Ms. Rebecca Johnson completed Post Basic Certificate in Paediatrics
Nursing in 1996
. Ms. Rebecca Johnson completed qualifications an Acute/Chronic
Paediatric Nurse Practitioner in 2003
Vision Statement
To provide excellence in health care to all children in an
environment which is parent/patient friendly. This environment will
be fostered by the training of all staff, co-management between
nursing and medical staff, and allied health care professionals. Open
communications with patient/relative and the professionals and
increased involvement of parents in planning patient care will also
be promoted.

Mission Statement
To provide holistic quality health care appropriate to the individual
needs of all children and their families by a team of professionals
committed to excellence in patient care; in an environment that
fosters a productive partnership with patient and family.

Executive Summary
The Pediatric Department continues to offer an exceptionally high level of
medical and nursing care services to children and their families who require
health care services. The Pediatric Department has a bed complement of
sixty (62) and comprises five units, and education room and the Hospital
School. The education room is utilized to provide educational sessions for
staff and clients and the Hospital School, affords school age children an
opportunity to continue their education during their hospitalization. Three
units East, West and Balcony accommodate patients ages six (6) months to
four (4) years old. The Nursery unit accommodates babies from newborns
up to five (5) months of age and the North unit accommodates children
between the ages of five (5) to twelve (12) years old. General Visiting hours
are: Monday Friday 5:30 p.m. 6:30 p.m and Sundays 3:00 p.m. 5:30
p.m.
