AIMS OF LESSON: by the end of the lesson students will be able to:

develop and practice the productive skills (writing, speaking) and the receptive skills
(listening, reading) ;

To promote discussion and to practice a dialogue related to superstitions;

To express ideas and to use the First Conditional;

reinforce vocabulary, to promote discussion and to practice language in a particular


context

OBJECTIVES:

THE EVENTS OF THE LESSON


1.WARMING-UP (9)
Aims: - to draw pupils attention and to introduce the new lesson;
- to review some verbs.
Interaction: T-S, S-Ss.
Skills: Speaking, reading, miming.
Activities: greetings, homework checking, introduction of the next lesson.
1st Activity: Greetings (<1)
Procedure- informal conversation.
2nd Activity: Homework checking (<2-3)
Interaction: T-S.
Skills: reading.

Procedure:

T asks Ss what their homework was and a S gives the answer. Ss read the homework.
T corrects the possible errors helped by the Ss and elicits them on the board.

3rd Activity: Brainstorming (< 5)


Interaction: lock step
Skills: speaking.
Aims: - to revise and practice the 1st conditional with the help of the context of superstitions

-to answer the questions

Procedure:
- T writes the title of the lesson on the blackboard Superstitions and explains that Ss

will talk about those common beliefs, things people are used to believe in without really know
why. These are called superstitions.

!!! Important: whenever Ss dont understand T questions or vocabulary, these will be translated
into Romanian.

2. THE CORE OF THE LESSON (approx. 38)


Aims: -to make lesson seem fun and exciting; to involve Ss in individual and group activities;
-to acquire and practice the First Conditional
Interaction: lock step
Skills- speaking, listening, reading, writing, comprehension, communication.
Activities:

1st Activity: Conditions to be taken into consideration (<10)


Interaction: T-Ss; Ss-T, group work
Skills: speakins, writing.
Procedure:

T shows a picture of a black cat and asks students what belief(s) they know about it.
She will write on the blackboard a sentence containing a superstition using the 1 st
conditional, eg. If a black cat crosses the road in front of you, you will have bad
luck. Then she shows a picture of a mirror, a leaf of clover and elicits the sentences
from the students. T writes the form of the 1st conditional and when to use it.

2nd Activity: Superstition Team (<10)


Interaction: T-S, S-Ss
Skills: speaking, writing
Procedure:
-

T divides the Ss into 5 teams. Every team has to take 3 tickets from the teacher s table. They
say if the superstitions written on them are good or bad luck superstitions. In pairs they have
to act out one superstition.

Good luck superstitions


- If your right hand itches, you will earn money.
- If you find a four-leaf clover, you will have good luck.
- If you see a horseshoe which was lost, you will have good luck.
- If you dream about a white cat, you will have good luck.
- If you see a black cat which walks towards you, it brings you good luck.
- If your right ear itches, someone is speaking well of you.
- If you put a mirror just across the door, you will have good luck.
- If you step on your shadow, it brings you good luck.
- If the first butterfly you see in the year is white, it brings you good luck all year.
Bad luck superstitions
- If you open an umbrella indoors, it brings you bad luck.
- When a cat sneezes three times indoors, it will rain in 24 hours.
- If you dream about a dog, you will have a lot of enemies.
- If you break a mirror, it will bring you seven years of bad luck.

- If you walk under a ladder, you will have bad luck.


- If a dog howls at night, death is near.
- If you see a bird that comes towards you, you will have bad luck.
- If you eat from the pot, it will rain at your wedding ceremony.
- If your left hand itches, you will lose money.

3th Activity: Worksheet (<10)


Interaction: T-S, S-T.
Skill: speaking, writing.
Procedure:

Ss solve the 1st conditional exercises from the worksheet. T praises every correct answer.

4th Activity: Mime it (<8)


Interaction: T-S, S-Ss.
Skill: speaking.
Procedure:
-

T proposes to Ss to play a mime game and guess/predict what activity is going to happen

T asks a S to come in front of the class and mime a superstition.

3.THE EVALUATION AND THE TRANSFER (<3)

Project - Students are asked to design a project about superstitions (most or less known).
Teacher praises all the students for their contribution.
Do you believe in superstitions?
Thousands of people believe in superstitions although a lot of people think of them as nonsense
and not based on reason. Where does the word superstition come from? The word superstition
comes from two Latin words: Super and Stare. Super means above and stare means to
stand.

There are two types of superstition. Good luck superstitions and bad luck superstitions.
Some common superstitions around the world:

Good luck superstitions
