CENTER FOR SKILLS UPGRADING AND INSTITUTIONAL LINKAGES

hello!
I am Ish Rio
I am here to present the first lesson of
Technical Drafting w/ 3D CAD

Lesson No. 1
Introduction to 3D Computer-Aided Design

Learning outcomes
At the End of this Chapter the
Student Should be Able to:
1.
2.
3.
4.

Using 3D CAD
A basic introduction on using 3D CAD in
Construction Industry

What is 3D CAD?
2D CAD
Uses X and Y axis only

3D CAD
Uses X , Y and Z axis

What is 3D CAD?

Z-axis
Y-axis

X-axis

The Cartetian Plane

In two or three columns

Green

Represents the Y-axis in your

modeling window. Lines drawn
here are belong to horizontal
plane

Red

Represents the X-Axis in your

modeling window. Lines drawn
here are belong to horizontal
plane

Blue

Represents the Z-Axis in your

modeling window. All lines
drawn here belongs to Vertical
Plane

Take note that both X and Y axis are now belong to your Horizontal plane
and the Z axis becomes part of the Vertical Plane

Autodesk AutoCAD
-AutoCAD is a computer-aided design
(CAD) program used for 2D and 3D design
and drafting.
-It is developed and
marketed by Autodesk Inc.
-Widely used all over the world making it
an Industry-Standard Software in
architecture, engineering & construction

The Construction Industry

Construction Industry is a
Market Which is Driven of
Accuracy
Flexibility
Speed

SketchUp

-SketchUp is free software for creating SURFACE MODELS

-It is developed and marketed first by Google and now it is owned by Trimble
-It is also widely used all over the world making it an Industry-Standard
Software in architecture, interior design engineering & construction.
-it is known for being easy-to-use and flexible 3d software

Before, software for building three-dimensional (3D) models of things

like buildings, cars, and other stuff was hard to use. I mean really hard
people went to school for years to learn it. And if that wasnt bad enough, 3D
modeling software was expensive so expensive that the only people who
used it were professionals and software pirates (people who stole it,
basically). Then along came SketchUp.

Things to Understand before Using SketchUp

1. You get SketchUp by downloading it from the Internet.

2. SketchUp works in Windows and Mac OS X

3. SketchUp comes in two software:
a. SketchUp Make
b. SketchUp Pro.

SketchUp Compare to Other 3D Modeling Software

Among the widely available 3D modeling applications,
SketchUp is the easiest to use. This software has been successful for
one reason: Within a few hours of launching SketchUp for the first time,
you can get good enough at SketchUp to build something. You have no
thick manuals to read, and no special geometric concepts to
understand. Modeling in SketchUp is about grabbing your mouse and
making something.

Understanding The Concept of Paper and Clay

Three-dimensional modeling software comes in two basic
flavors: solids and surfaces

An IMPORTANT Note
An important point to reinforce here is that theres no best
type of modeling software. It all depends on three things:

1. How you like to work?

2. What youre modeling?
3. What you plan to do with your model when its done?

Creating your First 3D Model

First, Install SketchUp

on your Computer
1. Installation of SketchUp on your Computer Unit
a. Open the SketchUp folder in your desktop
b. Double Click the sketchup.exe
c. Follow the Given Instructions

Open Your SketchUp Application

1. Double Click the SketchUp Shortcut
2. Select a template/ Choose Template
