BEACH CHANNEL DRIVE

OPEN BY MEMORIAL DAY

At least thats still the word from National Grid. The road from Beach 110
to Beach 108 has been closed since
early January. While checking out the
work, we discovered a little surprise:
benches and plantings have sprung up
along a new path adjacent to the new
bulkhead.

Anything For Ratings

Lots of readers sent me very
generous comments about last
weeks column regarding my
mother, Helen. (Online at RockawayTimes.com)
Of course, she couldnt take
the praise and went into hiding hoping everyone would forget the whole thing by the next
time she ventured out. But shes
cautious. If you see some wom-

an walking around with one of

those Groucho Marx masks its
probably Helen trying to stay
hidden. And heres a tip to the
ladies at the Arts & Craft or the
Sea Breeze raves I cant keep
track of all afterhours hangouts
she has dont believe her when
she says shes not related to me.
I gotta say, you want high ratings just write something about

Page 5

your mother. Last time one of my

columns had this much reaction
I accused my mother of trying to
kill me with pork chops. It had to
be 20 years ago and people still
come up to me, how could you
say that about your mother?
All I said was that I didnt know
pork chops were meat until I was
an adult. I thought pork chops
were bones and applesauce. And
these bones were burnt to a crisp
so thered be no danger of catching something called trichinosis.
We were like kids in school
practicing what to do in the event
of a nuclear attack. All of us
ducked under the dining room
table and grabbed our ankles
when the pork chops made their
way from the smoky kitchen.
My siblings now swear shes a
good enough cook to be on the
Food Channel. I think of her
cooking when I see the History
Channel (when flamethrowers
were introduced).
Anyway, the picture I put on
the front page last week, presented here again, was like
Peak Art everything would be
downhill after that, so I never
drew anything ever again.

Of course, some art critics

emerged. Including Helen. She
said, whats with the rouge? I
never wore rouge.
You went pretty heavy on the
lipstick, I said. And forget about
the rouge. Youre lucky we didnt
call you Crazy Eyes Helen if this
picture captured you then.
And the eyelashes look like
spiders, she added. You knew
when to stop drawing.

See what I have to put up

with? I draw a picture when Im
six years old and shes still taking shots at me.
I started a newspaper just to
make it a fair fight. So watch out,
Helen. Im just a typical media
guy. I build you up just to tear
you down. Oh, and whats for
dinner?

The Lazer Speaks

WALKING ARCHITECTURE
By Lou Pastina

There was literally too much

going on in Rockaway this past
weekend. I mean, A Taste of Rockaway, Thai Rock, Bungalow Bar,
Riis Park Bazaar, and RAAs Noisy
Paint Box. The peninsula was exploding with things to do, not to
mention Mothers Day (a happy
belated Mothers Day to all); and
an awesome fundraiser in Breezy
Point that proves that no matter
what happens on the western
end of the peninsula, they have a
heart that just wont quit.
Imagine if we had a ferry and
a boardwalk? It could be overwhelming. My old neighborhood
has to grapple with losing the L
train to Manhattan and back, and
all the folks that moved there the
last couple of years are howling!!!
The folks that have lived there as
long as I have been alive dont
really care about the L train; they
are not hipsters and didnt just
move there from Kansas.

Maybe we shouldnt care about

the ferry and boardwalk too.
Some gentrified neighborhoods
are unrecognizable by people
who have lived there their whole
lives. They cant park, are in danger of getting mowed down by
some crazy bicyclist, and dont
like food from places they cant
pronounce. There is something to
being in a neighborhood where
you know everyone, you feel safe
and the food is identifiable.
Dont get me wrong, I still want
a ferry and a boardwalk, but maybe the city should fix the roads
first, just saying. If Rockaway gets
too hot for you this summer, I
have an idea for those of you who
like architecture, go to 42nd Street
in Manhattan. Why you say? Well,
its home to two really cool architectural gems that are completely
overlooked by most New Yorkers:
Grand Central Station and the
New York Public Library.
Saved from the wrecking ball
that took the beautiful but decay-

t
Tufts University

Cornell University

ing Penn Station, Grand Central

is a masterpiece. You could just
stand in the middle of the terminal and look up at the stars that
are embedded in the ceiling. Or,
go to the Oyster Bar for a drink.
Or check out the whispering hallway where you can hear a conversation from the other side of the
room by listening to the wall.
Jackie Onassis Kennedy, who led
a coalition to landmark the building, and preserve this gem, saved
Grand Central. Its also fun to simply people watch. Some people are
native New Yorkers who are charging through the terminal; others
are tourists gawking at the big city.
Its fun to be a tourist in your own
city sometimes. It takes focus to
slow down and look around.
If you walk just a few blocks
away take 41st Street where
embedded in the sidewalk are
quotes from famous authors of
the world. It will lead you right to
the steps of the NY Public Library.
Once a reservoir for NYC, this is

one beautiful building. But dont

just hang out with the lions out
front, go inside! Beside the great
gift shop to the right, to the left
is a display room that always has
cool stuff. This spring it is photos
from their library. Definitely go to
the third floor (the Rose Reading
Room is closed on the first). There
is a Guttenberg Bible on display.
One of the few in the world, it is
an example of the first printing
press, literally the internet of its
time, and it changed the world
forever by spreading knowledge
to the masses. Go inside the huge
reading room and you will find
paintings of George Washington
and other famous New Yorkers.
When you are done admiring
the best of free New York, walk
around the corner to Bryant Park
and grab a drink and a snack,
and maybe a free movie. If we
did have those ferries, it would
be great if they could pick you up
right at 42nd Street and the East
River. Now that would be cool!

ON THE ROAD WITH

ROVER AND ROSA
SINGAPORE
By Wild Rover

When we wrote you upon first

landing in Hong Kong we joked
about writing you from the future
since we were 13 hours ahead in
that time zone. After visiting Singapore, the joke has become real;
we have seen the actual future.
Singapore is an Elysium. Sorry to break it to everyone, if this
were the movie Elysium, were
all living in Matt Damons neighborhood and Singaporeans are
floating above us living in Elysium. The entire city/state is immaculate, beautiful, and brand
new. The whole place, including
the metro stations, looks like 5th
Avenue and all of the high-rise

condos look like the best condos in Miami. Irish Rosa: Why
didnt you tell me they had Dior
and Chanel stores in the subway
here?! Everything runs perfectly
and is intuitive with English used
as the lingua franca among Mandarin, Malay, and a handful of
other languages. The food is out
of this world with top notch Thai,
Indian, Chinese, and Indonesian
standing out, but pretty much
any cuisine you can imagine.
Some may remember the caning incident of the mid 1990s
when American student Michael
Fay received six cane strokes for
vandalism while in Singapore,
so to some, Singapore has a suffocating, police-state image. We

didnt notice any of that and not

sure we even saw any police officers while we were there. Apparently theres no crime in the
future, which is good.
Needless to say the place is
absurdly expensive even by NY
standards. The culture doesnt
go much deeper other than
shopping, food, and beautiful places and people. Its also
somewhat sterile in its efficiency with no jay walking, litter, or
dirt of any kind for that matter.
The combination of expense
and lack of depth might make
it a stifling Pleasantville to
live in long-term, but for a
short visit its eye-opening. All
mayors and urban planners
should come to Singapore as a
master class immersion course.
Of course, much of this is only
possible due to the 70 year rule
of benevolent dictator, Lee Kuan
Yew, who just died last year.
No messy politics, lobbyists,
and special interests that cause
most of the mayhem in all other modern cities. Of course the
downside to this model is in the
wrong election year you could
find yourself trapped in a Trum-

The Rockaway Times

pian hell of orange skin, bad hair,
and worse public policy. *Checks
recent primary results; checks
Singapore immigration policy*. I
think the North Koreans outside
of the Kim family might also caution against this type of political
system. When it works though,
nothing can match its efficiency.
Not much to report on specific
activities, as Singapore is much
more about easy luxury living
in high-end restaurants and
shops. We celebrated Irish Rosa
joining the 30s club with a drink
on top of the Marina Bay Sands,
which has views into Indonesia
from the 60th floor followed by
unbelievable Chinese food at
the Ritz.
Singapore offers a great respite
from the hectic pace of much
of SE Asia. We wouldnt recommend flying half way across the
world to see it, but its an excellent stopover or entry point to explore any of the nearby countries.
Its also an eye into the future. As
you might expect I had to pry
Irish Rosa away from such a
city. With her tastes I think the
caning might be less painful
than spending more time here.

Local Athlete Shares Goodwill in Cuba

Stephanie Hahn, of
Belle Harbor, is one of
the few people from
the United States who
can say theyve recently traveled to Cuba. The
20-year-old Kingsborough Community College student spent her
spring break in the country as one of 16 student
athletes in the City University of New York system that were given the
opportunity to embark
on CUNYs Goodwill
Tour.
Hahn, who plays on the
basketball and volleyball
teams at Kingsborough,
was shocked when her
coach told her she was
selected as the student
athlete
representative
from her school, to go on
a once in a lifetime trip
to Cuba. She first learned
in December. When my
coach told me, I thought

he was joking, but they

really chose me to go to
Cuba. It was crazy, Hahn
said. The faculty found
Hahn to be the perfect
candidate to represent
Kingsborough. Hahn not
only plays on the basketball and volleyballs
teams, shes the captain
of both and she recently received the CUNY
Sportsmanship award
for both sports. In addition to being a stellar
athlete, shes also a good
student. Hahn is part
of the Honors Program,
where she also works for
the Assistant Provosts
office, and maintains a
3.46 GPA.
The CUNY Goodwill
Tour is an opportunity
for student athletes to
immerse themselves in
the culture of a destination and to give back to
the people there. Previous Goodwill Tours
included trips to places

like the Dominican Republic, Ecuador, Argentina, South Africa, Italy

and New Orleans, but
this was the first opportunity the students got
to experience Cuba since
travel restrictions have
been loosened under
President Obama.
Hahn, along with 15
other CUNY students
and roughly 10 staff
members embarked on
the journey on Friday,
April 21. The all-expenses paid trip included
transportation, meals,
hotel stays and cultural tours, but it also gave
the students a chance to
give back to young Cubans in need at schools
and hospitals. From this
opportunity, I was able
to get something that I
wouldve never gotten if
I hadnt gone on this trip.
The mission was to give

CB 14 Monthly Meeting Recap

By Pat Morgan

Community Board 14 held

its regular monthly meeting on
Tuesday, May 10, at the Knights
of Columbus Hall on Beach 90th
Street.
The featured speakers were
District 31 Council Member Donovan Richards Jr. and District 32
Council Member Eric Ulrich.
CM Richards covered a number
of items including the upcoming
$30M project to upgrade Rockaway Beach Blvd between the
YMCA and the Hammel Houses,
the $1M expansion of the Addabbo Health Center, the $1M
project on B53/54 Street for new
storefronts, the opening of the La
Quinta hotel on B44 Street that will
employ 17 Rockaway residents,
the Goldie Maple Playground that
will open in a few days, the Far
Rockaway Library project being
on schedule, an upcoming Gun
Buyback program at the Macedonia Baptist Church on June 25, and
an update on the Downtown Far
Rockaway project that is a $200M
investment in the community.

CM Ulrich spoke about the

May 23 meeting with the local
elected officials and city agencies
(MTA, DOT, Parks, etc.) which
is a preemptive attempt to avoid
last summers traffic fiasco at the
Cross Bay Bridge. He mentioned
that the MTA is trying to move to
all cashless lanes, but issues still
need to be addressed. Ulrich opposed the recently approved City
Council Plastic Bag vote because
he thought it would be unfair to
charge New Yorkers more money
to shop in an already expensive
city. His last topic was the recently passed Veterans Bill where the
$5M budget will employee 35
(who are mostly Veterans) and
provide better services to the
235,000 Veterans living in NYC. Ulrich responded to a question from
a CB14 Council member asking
if this program applies to Veterans who are in nursing homes or
homebound. He stated that the
program will send people to their
locations and to call his office if you
know of anyone in that situation.
Nineteen people signed up for
the Public Speaking portion of the

meeting. Opinions were voiced

about issues such as beach access this summer in Rockaway
Park, smoke-free housing resolution, the SJEH PAM Project
survey, local residents getting
concessions on the beach, more
time to explore mosquitoes and
the impact of the Zika virus. A
number of speakers expressed
their concerns about the parking
situation in downtown Far Rockaway, i.e. new stores and a library
will be built, however there will
not be ample parking for residents
to frequent them.
This months guest presentation was by City Clerk, Michael
McSweeney, regarding the Lobbying Bureau Amnesty Program
which was for anyone who has
exceeded the $5000 threshold for
lobbying a NYC official and has
not registered or filed reports.
More information can be found at
www.cityclerk.nyc.gov.
Chairperson Dolores Orr announced some good news regarding the NYC Parks Department. In
addition to the 40 seasonal workers slotted for the entire peninsula,

for a total of 95. Instead of sharing
a PEP (Parks Enforcement Patrol)
officer, Rockaway will be getting
their own, who happens to be a
resident. FEMA will be paying
to replace 600 Sandy-damaged
benches, which does not include
portions of the boardwalk that
were intact after the storm.
District Manager, Jonathan
Gaska, stated that a more interactive CB14 website is still on
target for July. He expects the
new 100th Precinct CO, Captain
Janice L. Holmes, to attend the
next months meeting. Also on
that agenda is the Department
of Health to talk about the Zika
virus (i.e. salt marsh mosquitoes
arent carriers) and scheduled
mosquito spraying.
CB Board also voted in favor of a
three-block buffer zone for beach
vendors not to compete with the
merchants on B116.
The next Monthly Board Meeting is on June 14 at 7:15 PM. Agenda and location are to be determined. This is the last meeting
until September 13.

Rockaway Beach Goes Rio

By Luiza Baker

On the eve of the Oi Rio Pro,

one neednt explain the parallels that can be drawn between
Rockaways increase in surf tourism with the coast of Peru, or the
likeness of our new boardwalk
to Avenida Atlntica in Brazil.
What may be less obvious is the
sense of community that these
cultures share with those of our
coastal town. Walk into any establishment on this peninsula
and you will encounter locals
who are there not just to eat, but
to bathe in the collective light
of Rockaway as a whole. Such
was the case when I arrived at
Chicks To Go on their opening
weekend in March 2015, where
I was kindly introduced to Chef
Carlos Varella and his family by
local surfer Daniel Queiroz. I
was immediately struck by their
warmth and eagerness to speak
to new people.
Fast forward a year later to
Chicks To Gos first Anniversary, where I ran into Chef Carlos
and his wife, model Andressa

Junqueira again- and they were

happy to share news that they
were opening their own place on
Restaurant Row: Terra Brasilis beach bistro 96, introducing
Brazilian flavors with a French
Twist to Rockaway. I was intrigued by their story, which begins in Santos, Brazil where Carlos
began surfing at age 7, eventually
becoming a professional surfer,
winning a Hurley competition
there as recently as 2013. And
somehow became a professional
soccer player as well. However,
his roots in cuisine go just as far

back, his mother-a chef of International cuisine and father a chef

specializing in Italian.
But it was later during his seven years living in Mexico that
Carlos future began to take a
different path, transitioning his
surfing career into more commercial modeling which initially started with Elite Models
in Brazil. While there he began
to learn Mexican cuisine, the
result of an interest developed
from cooking meals on surf trips
around South America. In Mexico he met his future wife Andressa, also a Brazilian model,
who was discovered at the age
of 14 in her hometown of Minas
Gerais. Their careers eventually
brought them to NYC in 2010,
where Carlos began to work
with well-known Peruvian Chef
Emanuel Piqueiras of Panca, in
the West Village. That same year
Chef Piqueiras invited Carlos to
surf in Rockaway where he was
introduced to Leyla and Ximena
Yrala - of Chicks To Go and La
Cevichera and they have been
coming here ever since.

Carlos went on to attend

French Culinary School, graduating with a Diploma in 2015.
Through Ximena and Leyla,
Carlos was introduced to David
Selig who invited him to participate in The Summer Shift last
year, a pop-up with Ximena and

Leyla called Neighbors representing a mix of Peruvian and

Brazilian cuisine, at which time
he and Andressa began to think
about starting a life here with
their children Nicolas and Kalani. A year later in May 2016 that
dream has become reality with
the opening this past Saturday
of Terra Brasilis beach bistro 96
which I attended.

Fight ALS
By Helen Kilgallen

Some days it can be really difficult to be positive when the sun

disappears and the rain is a regular visitor. We suddenly become
very aware of the weather and how
it will make or break our day. But
then you hear of a neighbor going
through really tough times with a
sickness and you wake up to reality. In fact, you feel really silly for
letting the weather get you down.
Sometimes, I think the rain is a
reminder to slow down and look
around at what we have. There are

times we take so much for granted

until there is a wake up call.
Recently, I was honored to attend a fundraiser for John Kelly,
who has been diagnosed with ALS.
The fundraiser was a huge success
with so many people attending
for a man of dignity, integrity and
strength. It has been a nightmare
for John and his family and yet
somehow John smiles and continues to inspire all of us. His wife,
Janine, also smiles and is the definition of true love. John is so full of
life and compassion. I cannot understand for the life of me why or

The Rockaway Times

how this has happened. We want

answers and we most certainly
want a cure. It just doesnt seem
fair that someone who has given so much to humanity is in this
terrible place. John is one of the
strongest and most courageous
guys I have ever met. He is bigger
than life and has so much spirit.
Being a coach and trainer he has
helped and guided so many young
people on the right path. He simply does not deserve to be in this
place. How does he rise above it
all? Love keeps him going. He is
surrounded by the most loving,
supportive family. They are giving
back to him, what he gave to them
his entire life. He will never give up
because he is surrounded by love.
Love is the antidote.
I believe it is passion and love
that keeps us alive and provides
us with the will to live on. Positive thinking and having a strong
foundation from the roots up
help us to survive. Faith keeps us
alive. Living one day at a time and
perhaps being present with each
moment as best we can. There
is no doubt Breezy Point, Roxbury, Rockaway, Broad Channel
and Xavier High School are some

of the strongest, most resilient

communities in the country. We
become family and we do what
is necessary. How can we be of
service to our fellow man? What
can we do to help? Check out ALS
ONE. They are trying to find a cure
and are the greatest supporters.
My saving grace has always
been meditation and yoga. Its
the easiest and most organic
thing I have ever done. It helps
me to connect, ground and be in
the moment. Take a deep breath
in through your nose and exhale
out. Breathe in, breathe out. Perhaps a mantra, when you breathe
in, silently say Let, breathe out,
silently say Go. Keep your eyes
closed and be at ease. Connect
to your Higher Self by being with
your breath and mantra. Let your
breath be long and slow, soft and
gentle, kind and compassionate.
There is no right way or wrong
way. You are making a connection to your higher source and
everything is going to be OK. You
are here, now. Be still, be awake
and just allow the flow of energy
to be released. I am praying for a
cure for ALS. Lets fight this crazy
disease.

CREATES MEMORABLE
SUMMERS FOR LOCAL KIDS
By Christine Mullaly

Someday, when things slow

down, well compile the databases of campers from every
year and have a number of exactly how many Rockaway children have spent their summers
at camp kidsmART since 2000.
Its probably more than 2,000,
but at this time of year we can be
sure of one thing its not going
to slow down because were preparing for yet another fantastic
summer.
Camp kidsmART is best described as a blended palette.
We keep the best the things
that work year after year, discard
some best laid plans and experiment with new activities and
ideas to see what sticks and what
falls away. Eventually, were left
with layer upon layer of things
campers love to do.
What works for us and the
kids? The kidsmART principles
in all their cornball glory are
simply eight words: kindness,
imagination, dependability, sensitivity, motivation, acceptance,
respect and tolerance. But at
camp, those principles are taken
to heart and acted out by campers and counselors alike. Theres
a pride taken in being good. At
camp its cool to participate to
take the stage and sing acapella
or wear the wackiest clothes on
Mismatched Duds Day. The peer
pressure enacted is to embody
the principles and it creates a lot
of happy campers.
The usual camp fun works,
too playing in the sprinklers;

the carnival with blow up slides

and obstacle courses and a
dunk tank where they can dunk
Matt, Tristan, Brittany or another one of their favorite counselors; the scavenger hunt with
counselors dressed like knights
and princesses; Italian ices and
watermelon; Minute-to-Win-It
games; and pranks played on
the first year interns and junior
counselors (just because were
principled doesnt mean we
dont have fun!).
This year, were changing it
up for a bit and all for the better.
Two of our best Senior Counselors, Kalin Callaghan and Nancy
Cusack are going to run a bona
fide artists studio for campers in
the sTudio 7 gallery. Two days of
the week campers will have the
opportunity to work with Kalin
in the studio to create clay sculptures and the other two days
theyll have the opportunity to
work with Nancy painting at the
easels. In this new format Kalin
and Nancy will be able to give
campers more time to develop
their techniques and work on
projects at their skill level. Time
spent in the studio will have a
real artists vibe!
And T149 is going to get a significant interior facelift. This
wont just be a fresh coat of paint,
but a newly designed kitchen and
storage space will give campers
more room to spread out and
work on projects or play games.
The main space of the building
will also be reconfigured to allow

La Palma is Quiet,
Life is Good!

As far as I am concerned,
nothing compares to waking up to the tranquility of
summer living on the water
here in Broad Channel. The
screeching of the sea gulls
as they kamikaze the back
deck in an effort to eat the
remaining morsels of food
left over from yesterdays
BBQ. The sounds of garbage

cans being knocked asunder

by a raccoon searching for
its own share of the booty.
Lest we forget those beautiful long necked mute swans
who purposely travel up and
down our canals as residents
dutifully file outside, in what
is almost a religious ritual, to offer morsels of bread
to these graceful creatures
who will, if you venture a tad
too close, attempt to remove
your hand from your wrist!
And then of course we have
the monthly Broad Channel
Early Warning System, which
consists of the blaring of car
horns as our neighbors signal
us that yet another round of
tidal flooding is inundating
our street with the incoming
high tide.
Ah yes, those pesky high
tides! There are generally
two types of reactions among

Broad Channel residents

when confronted with the issue of tidal flooding. There
are those like my neighbor
Mary Ann Nellen who view
such tidal burps as nothing
more than an interesting
inconvenience deserving of
nothing more than a glass of
chilled wine and perhaps a
few photographs for nostalgic
purposes. On the other hand,
there was one neighbor who
continually became hysterical at the prospect of having
to move her car and perhaps
even wade through the tidal
waters. Several months ago I
attempted to reassure her that
tidal flooding of her street is
not an everyday occurrence
and, for the most part, can
be easily anticipated. Unfortunately, no rational words
of reassurance would serve
to assuage this individuals

almost manic fears and so I

switched to Plan B.
I calmly advised that perhaps she was not looking at
the big picture and that there
are bigger dangers she should
be worried about. I told her
that there is a distinct possibility of a mega-tsunami
caused by a massive landslide as a large section of La
Palma, one of the Canary Islands in the Eastern Atlantic,
collapses into the ocean following a volcanic eruption
of the Cumbre Vieja volcano
on La Palma. My neighbor
looked at me quizzically and
said But thats so far away,
whats the big deal? I continued by telling her that if
this happens, scientists believe that a wall of water up

across the Atlantic and reach
our coast in about nine hours
with devastating effect with
the tsunami traveling almost

At this point I noticed her
eyes suddenly got much
wider but she still held out
hope stating, At least nine
hours is a lot of time to evacuate, right? I then lowered
the boom and told her that
evacuation would be virtually impossible due to only
hours notice and the subsequent immediate gridlock
that would follow. My God,
what can I do? I recommended she routinely visit
the Smithsonian Institutions
Global Volcanism website
at http://volcano.si.edu/ to
monitor any reports of activity at the La Palma volcano
and to pay more attention
to the tidal charts to make
sure her car is kept safe so
that she can bug out at the

advance of the gridlock that
would follow an actual eruption.
I am happy to report that
my neighbor now religiously
monitors tidal charts, moves
her car, complete with a fully packed bug out kit, to the
boulevard at the slightest
hint of coastal flooding and
checks the Smithsonians
Volcano site at least once a
day now. Today when I run
into her on the street and ask
how she is doing she always
replies with a smile, La Palma is quiet, life is good!
Hey, whatever works, right?
Like I said at the start of
this column, nothing beats
the peace and tranquility
that comes with living on the
water. If youve never experienced waterfront living, you
probably would not understand the sentiment. But for
those of us who do, nothing
more need be said.

Wrong All Over

Dear Editor:
Beginning in 2000, I sent
photos to the Queens Parks
Commissioner of Parks of
bulldozers flattening the small
dunes on the beach every
winter- at considerable taxpayer expense. Dorothy Lewandowski wrote to me that
they were grooming the
beach. That seemed an image taken from a hair salon.
One wonders if those natural dunes, left to grow, would
have reduced the effects of
Sandy. Lets not ask if Parks
bears any responsibility there.
Now, Surprise! Parks is building sand dunes- at considerable taxpayer expense- but with
large gaps between which will
allow the sea to flow in. Half of
the sand they pumped is gone
already.

DIVISION BY MAPPING
We often hear all kinds of
rhetoric when it comes to what
is wrong with the Rockaway
peninsula.
Residents in the eastern
neighborhoods of Far Rockaway, Edgemere, Arverne and
parts of Rockaway Beach often
assert that there is some sort
of inequity in governmentally
provided services and in private investment. I hear the same
rhetoric from those living in the
neighborhoods of Breezy Point,
Neponsit, Belle Harbor, Rockaway Park and parts of Rockaway
Beach.
These peninsula-wide suspicions of inequity may be a real
feeling, but its cause is hardly

an eastern neighborhoods vs.

western neighborhoods issue.
What it is, is a north vs. south
issue! Im not talking the Mason
Dixon line here folks, Im talking
the Jamaica Bay effect, the natural (I do mean that in the literal
sense) boundary between the
main-land neighborhoods of
NYC Council Districts 31 and 32.
There IS inequity on our peninsula, as far as council districts
go, but its hardly east and west!
The mere fact that the Rockaway
portion of Council Districts 31
and 32 make up less than 35-40
percent of each district respectively, means in reality, we have
less than 70-80 percent of council representation within the

NYC Council, peninsula-wide.

I know Councilmen Ulrich and
Richards do the best they can
with what they have, but its still
a major disadvantage for us, as a
peninsula, to be represented so
fractionally. The same goes for
the NY State Senate and the NY
State Assembly!
Senators Addabbo and Sanders
and Assembly members Goldfeder and Titus all do the best they
can!
Wouldnt it be better if our elected officials ONLY concern was
our little slice of heaven called the
Rockaway peninsula and they all
lived here with their families?
Imagine if we had one NYC
Councilman for the whole island, one NY State Senator for the
whole island and one member
of the NY State Assembly for the
whole island? All representing
JUST ROCKAWAY!?!?
Why not? In a few years our
population, peninsula-wide, will
be large enough to warrant a major change in our Political Equity.
Its the 101st anniversary of
the Rockaway peninsulas futile
attempt at seceding from NYC.
Lets start planning!

Tool Week
By Artie Wallace

For this tool week we are going to look at cordless tools vs.
corded. This has been a matter of debate for years, but in
the more recent years cordless has been taking the lead.
With faster battery chargers,
higher voltage tools and other
upgrades through the years,
cordless tools are much better
than when they first came out.
There will never be a substitute for the power and reliability of corded tools for certain uses, yet contractors and
servicemen are relying more
and more on cordless these
days. If youre using a miter
box to cut all day, you want to
be sure to have a corded one.
But if youre drilling holes in
wood (or running in screws)
the right cordless drill would
be the way to go.

Some of the cons of using

cordless tools are: reciprocating saws, circular saws and
higher power tools tend to
drain batteries a little quicker (so you may want to buy
an extra battery). Once your
batteries are dead, work stops
until they recharge. Cordless
does not have the same power as corded tools.
Some of the pros are: No
extension cords to deal with.
Todays cordless tools (of
better quality) can deal with
most everyday jobs. Cordless
tools come in a much larger
variety than they did in the
past.
You dont want to buy a
Drill Master or Cargo Freight
cordless tool, but you also
dont need to spend a lot on
Dewalt or Ridged. As a contractor I use Ryobi Plus 1
cordless set 18 volts. I find the

battery life is pretty good, the

tool quality is good, batteries
charge pretty quick and best
of all, the price is good. You
can get a set with a 4 circular
saw, reciprocating saw, drill,
two batteries and charger for
about $150. You can also buy
extra batteries if needed. This
is a great set for homeowners
and DIYers. Ryobi also sells

BEACH GOES RIO

The
atmosphere
exuded
warmth and community as displayed by lively conversation
amidst terrific music. It was evident to me that beach bistro 96
will be yet another great addition
in the Pantheon of local hangouts.
On the menu at beach bistro 96
is Feijoada- the Brazilian National Dish which will be offered on
Wednesdays and Saturdays and
is sure to become a new Rockaway tradition. Terra Brasilis will
also stay true to being bistro by
serving French dishes such as Ratatouille. In addition to Brazilian
foods like Pao de Quejo, Tapioca,
Pasteis and Coxinha, Chef Carlos
is serving Temakis and a Mushroom Quinoto with Parmesan
Shell. Furthermore, Chef Carlos is
working with Nutritionist Angela
Kurtz of Mt. Sinai Hospital to develop a vegan menu.
I look forward to watching this
family welcomed here over the
coming summer. Perhaps even
more notable however, is Carlos
and Andressas excitement to be
meeting YOU. Go eat, sit down,
stay a while!
other tools that work with
the 18 volt Plus 1 batteries, so
you can add to your tool collection while only buying as
many batteries as you need.
A key rule of working with
cordless tools is when youre
working, always put whatever batteries youre not using
on charge. That way theyre
always fully charged when
you need them. Once a battery is fully charged, take it
off charge (dont leave it on
longer than needed).

more wall space for hanging the
awesome artwork the campers
create and to give the room a
more open feel.
A great new addition is a
partnership with the Education Department at the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA).
For our first-ever camp field
trip well take our oldest campers to MoMA in the heart of
Manhattan to participate in an
art-making workshop and take
a tour of MoMAs awesome
collection. Every counselor is
going to want to be a chaperone how will we choose?!
Our final big change for
this upcoming season is adding three weeks to our camp
schedule. Now, families can
opt to come to camp for one
week at the end of June, or for
the full six-week camp (July 5

GOODWILL IN CUBA

Continued from Page 15

back to others what we have and

what they dont have. It made
me realize that even though
you have struggles in life, there
are others who have it worse,
she said. When I walked into
Cuba, it was like going back in
time and it was frozen. We went
to hospitals and schools and did
field work and its nothing like
what we have here. If youre in
the hospital there and you have
cancer or any disease, thats basically it for you. All they can do
is make you feel comfortable.
When we went to the schools, we
found that they have no books,
no sports equipment. A basketball can cost $25 there and $25
can be someones salary for an
entire month, even for a doctor.
You dont make money there. So
when we handed out balls and
t-shirts, people started crying
and saying how can you give me
such an amazing object, this is
life changing. Its crazy to think
how we take advantage of things
like a ball, but meanwhile there,
a ball can be your life. It gives
you a whole new perspective

Stephanie with locals

and makes you appreciate a lot.

The Goodwill Tour gave Hahn
the opportunity to connect with
the people of Cuba. The people were very friendly. I thought
they might not be so welcoming but theyd always say hello
and compliment me, which was
surprising because of the struggles America has with Cuba, but
I spoke to someone who made
me realize that its not the American people they look down on,
its the government. Theyre always going to be welcoming to

The Rockaway Times

our people, she said. In some

instances, Hahn says she felt
like a celebrity. With baseball
being a major sport in Cuba,
the CUNY athletes were able to
spend a day with Cuban baseball
legend Omar Linares. We got
to interview Omar and at night
we dressed up and went in an
old convertible car and drove
around and went to a fancy restaurant and ate dinner with him.
While we were driving around,
all the Cubans were waving at us
and it was amazing, she said.
Despite a language barrier,
Hahn was able to communicate
with the people in other ways.
We went to a school and I was
able to teach some kids how to
play basketball and volleyball and
give them things like sneakers and
balls, and in return, they taught
me some Spanish. I didnt understand it so the language barrier
was hard but we started to communicate through hand signals
and we both seemed to get it.
Hahns once in a lifetime trip
ended on a high note. One of
my favorite parts was the last
day when we went hiking up a
mountain. We wound up hiking

T+|
e |

five miles down the mountain to

this amazing waterfall, where we
were able to swim and have lunch
and then I rode a horse all the way
back up the mountain. The view
was beautiful, she said.
Hahn recommends traveling
to Cuba if you want a unique
experience. If you want to see
something different from modern times, do it, but be ready to
not have cellphone service. It
really is like going back in time,
but if you want an escape, go
see it because the architecture
is amazing and the people are
beautiful, the culture is like no
other and youre not going to
be able to experience that anywhere else, she said. For Hahn,
the trip gave her a life lesson.
Im thankful for everything
that I have and I learned that its
important to give back as much
as I can to the people who need
it. Even when Im down, Ill always remember that there are
people who are less fortunate.
Hahn returned on May 1. She
expects to graduate from Kingsborough this June and plans
to continue her education at a
four-year college.

Women of the Peninsula:

CHRISTINE STREHLE OF KENNEDYS

By Katie McFadden

Who runs the peninsula? Women. As part of an ongoing series,

the Rockaway Times is profiling
local female business owners each
week. This week is Christine Buckley Strehle, co-owner of Kennedys
in Breezy Point and Buckleys in
Brooklyn.
Christine Buckley Strehle, of
Rockaway, has the tough job of
being co-owner of not one, but
two restaurants, and being a
mom to six kids. Strehle, along
with her brother Jimmy Buckley
Jr., and Gerard Casey, owns Kennedys in Breezy Point and Buckleys in Brooklyn. Buckleys has
served Brooklyn since the Buckley family opened it in 1972. Kennedys has served Breezy Point
since Gerard Casey and Strehles
father, Jimmy, opened it in 1980.
Jimmy Buckley passed away in
2010, but his children have kept
his businesses running successfully. Both are family owned restaurants that offer steak, chops
and seafood, but both bring
something different to the table.
Kennedys is more fine dining
and we offer a party space and
with Buckleys, we also run a catering business. Our joke is that
people go to Buckleys to eat and
Kennedys to dine, she said.
Strehle grew up into the restaurant business. Ive been working
since Im 13. Ive done every restaurant job possible. I was a bus
person, a dishwasher, I worked
behind the line, front of the
house, behind the bar, Ive done
it all. Ive always been in the restaurant business with my family,
she said. There was a time when
she tried her hand at something
else. I worked in an office for
a week. Thats how long it took
me to realize I wasnt an office
person, she said. In her role as
co-owner of Buckleys and Kennedys, Strehle handles daily operations. Im physically at Kennedys more. I help prepare for
parties coming in or special reservations at Kennedys, but Im
involved in the daily operations
of both restaurants and I consult
with Gerard and Jimmy on major

Christine Strehle and her family at the Brooklyn Women of Distinction Awards.
decisions in the business to help
drive it forward, she said.
For Strehle, the most rewarding
part of the restaurant business is
meeting peoples expectations. I
enjoy bringing to fruition, somebodys expectations of the dining
experience. Ill go out of my way
to do that, she said. Along with
that is ensuring that the establishments look good. My hobby is decorating, so I decorated
Kennedys and it makes me happy when people come here and
love the feel of the restaurant. Its
such a compliment and makes
me feel like it was a success,
Strehle said of revamping Kennedys after Hurricane Sandy.
The most challenging aspect is
dealing with changing times.
This business has changed a
lot since I was younger. The cost
of doing business has increased
immensely, from food costs to
taxes, so you have to work harder to make money. Keeping the
customer happy has always been
our mission, but its a challenge
to balance the menu to work
within the establishment, while
giving the customer what they
want, she said, adding that they
do their best to listen to customer feedback. The customer is the
most important person in the restaurant. If they arent happy, we
arent successful. We truly listen
to what our customers ask for.
Strehle and her partners of-

ten strive to improve both restaurants. In 2011, we redid the

bar in Buckleys because it was
antiquated, so we brought it up
to date and gave it a Manhattan
feel, she said. Kennedys also
got an upgrade, just four months
before Sandy, with the owners
pouring tens of thousands of dollars into renovations. Little did
they know that their effort would
be in vain and theyd have to start
over after the storm, but they
brought Kennedys back again on
the second anniversary of Sandy.
Our customers are grateful to
have the restaurant back, which
is even better than it was before
the storm, Strehle said. Now
theyre looking into more ways to
improve. Outside seating at Kennedys is something people have
been asking for, so were looking
forward to offering that starting
this summer. Improvements will
also be coming to Buckleys when
the owners add sliding doors to
the Ave S and Nostrand Avenue
restaurant. Its going to give it
more curb appeal, Strehle said.
Aside from balancing two restaurants, Strehle takes care of a
large family. I have six children,
Caroline, John, Kyle, Kevin, Terence and Michael, so that keeps
me busy, too. Balancing family
and business life is difficult, but
my husband, John makes it a lot
easier. On weekends hes able
to pick them up from different

sporting events and when Im off

on Mondays and Tuesdays, Ill
return carpooling duties and offset what doesnt get done on the
weekend when Im at work. It was
more difficult when my kids were
little. I worked nights and theyd
go to bed early and wake up early. Now that theyre older, Im the
one coming home and waiting
hours for them to come home,
she said.
In addition to keeping the
Buckley family restaurants going,
Strehle plays a role in continuing another family tradition, the
Buckley to Kennedys 5K Charity
Run. The annual event, which will
be held for the 36th time on Sunday, May 15, helps HeartShare, an
organization that offers human
services, especially to those with
developmental disabilities. The
race, started by Strehles father,
originally went from Buckleys
restaurant to Kennedys, but now
only takes place in Breezy Point.
The race has raised as much
as $100,000 for HeartShare, for
which Strehle sits on the board.
Strehle also finds time to serve
the community. She helps with
fundraising at Xavier, where her
sons go to school. She also brings
meals to the elderly, especially
around St. Patricks Day when she
provides them with corned beef
and cabbage dinners. I like to
help the community to set a good
example for my kids, she said. In
2014, Strehles efforts were recognized when she was honored as a
Brooklyn Woman of Distinction,
which recognizes women who
have made a difference. Strehle is also a member of the Parish
Council at St. Francis de Sales as
faith plays a large role in her life.
Achieving goals requires commitment and sacrifice, but as
long as you remember the most
important things are love, prayer
and faith, youre going to get
through, she said.
Kennedys (718-945-0202), located at 406 Bayside in Breezy
Point is open for lunch and dinner, Tuesdays through Sundays, as
well as jazz brunch on Sundays.
Buckleys (718-998-4222) is located at 2926 Ave S in Brooklyn.

NEWS THE WAY YOU WANT IT

By Pat Morgan

I bet that you arent too happy with the way you receive your
news. How would you like to customize your favorite news topics
into your own personal magazine?
Well, there is an easy and free
way of doing that on your smart
device.
Flipboard is a mobile app that
presents itself in a magazine format. Its software collects articles from social media and other
websites, and allows you to flip
through them by your favorite
categories. Flipboard has partnered with many of the top news
websites, some that you would
have needed a paid subscription
to access. The free app is available
on iOS (Apple), Android and Windows devices and can be downloaded from the respective app
store.
Getting started is easy. After you
download this app, your email address and password are required

for activation. It will then offer you

the option of selecting your favorite topics from a list of categories, which will allow you to create
your custom news feed.
Main topics include Business,
Tech/Science, Sports, Photo/Design, Living, Food/Dining, Travel,
Style, Arts/Culture, Music, Books,
Big Ideas, City Guides and Shopping. Once you start selecting
your favorite topics, Flipboard will
also suggest related subtopics.
For example, I had selected Food
& Dining and it offered me an
option for Slow Cooker Recipes,
which I decided to follow as well.
The articles, most with magazine-quality photographs, are
pulled from the whos who of
national and international media.
To name a few, the list includes
Time Magazine, National Geographic, Reuters, Fox Business,
USA Today, Chicago Tribune,
Forbes, NBC News, BBC World,
ESPN, NY Times, Wall Street Journal, Market Watch, Associated
Press, as well as individual con-

tributors.
Besides your favorite topics, Flipboard automatically adds two tiles
of their own to the
apps home page:
Cover Stories and
The Daily Edition,
which update you
on current events
worldwide. After
you have completed all of your
topic selections, you will end up
with multiple screens with tiles
on them displaying your choices. (My suggestion is to initially
limit the number of categories
and subcategories to avoid information overload.) If you change
your mind on a topic, you can
delete and add them as necessary. To flip from one page to
another or from one article to another, all you need to do is swipe
your finger across the screen. It
can be either up/down or left/
right depending on your device.
Flipboard does contain ads, but

they are full pages that show up

every once in a while, which you
can easily flip past.
You can also connect to your
favorite Social Media site (Facebook, Twitter, etc.) from the Flipboard app to share an article with
friends.
For more information, you
can visit their website: https://
flipboard.com/ They even have
a YouTube video for starters:
https ://www.youtube.com/
watch?v=97dU6Gzc3JA&feature=youtu.be
So, download the app and start
flipping!

FIRST PERSON
MUAY THAI IS NOT ANOTHER FRUITY DRINK
By Chris Romulo

Muay Thai Kickboxing AKA

The Art Of 8 Limbs is the national sport of Thailand NOT
the fruity and refreshing drink
inspired by the Tahitian paradise: the Mai Tai. If you only
attempt to scratch the surface of
what Muay Thai is, you will find
that Muay Thai is a brutal ring
sport from South East Asia which
mimics boxing, except it is done
barefoot with snake charming music playing in the background during the fights.
While all of this may seem
true, like any Martial Art there
are deeper meanings and value with in. As with most things
in life if you spend some quality time with an open mind you
will learn you can look for the
good in something and it will
change your life for everas it
did for me.
I found Muay Thai back in
the mid 90s as a teen after getting my nose broken and orbital socket fractured in a street

scrap that I was lucky enough to

walk away from. When I started
learning about Muay Thai, I too
only scratched the surface in
finding an effective Martial Art
that would keep me safe in life
threatening situations. I wanted
to learn how to use my my fists,
feet, elbows and knees to make
me untouchable in my neighborhood of Queens Village, NY.
But as my thirst for learning
this art grew so did my mind
and heart, to realize its not
about being the toughest guy on
the block. It became more of a
journey in taking all my young
rebellious energy and directing it
in to something positive, keeping
me off the streets, and giving me
goals in life. Along my path Ive
learned how to channel my stress
and relieve it through my training. I became a better son and
brother to my family members
and dedicated single father to
my first son. Eventually I met my
wife through training and started my own family business that
thrives on helping others find

their passion in our community.

I owe everything that I hold dear
in my life to that one miserable
and life threatening day back in
the mid 90s!
You dont have to be a knucklehead with no direction in life to
benefit from what Muay Thai has
to offer. Nowadays with the rise
of Mixed Martial Arts as a sport
you can walk in to a Muay Thai
gym and learn this life changing
art with out being bruised and
battered in to submission.
Proper progressive learning of
Muay Thai will take an individual
through steps similar in nature
to that of learning to ride a bike,
or how to catch a wave. You
must learn to crawl before you
walk. First order of business is

learning how to wrap your hands

properly to keep them protected.
Next up will be getting your body
warmed up by skipping rope for
a few minutes or doing some
calisthenics to loosen up. Just
like a boxer you will learn how to
shadow box to become familiar
with basic striking techniques
and footwork. After you have
broken a good sweat and your
body is feeling pumped, you will
take those same techniques to
the heavy bag and bring on some
aggressive stress relief. If this all
sounds like a workout, you can
look forward to one of the most
complete heart pounding, muscle building and skill training
sessions that you have ever blessed your body with.
If you are looking for a way
to invigorate your body, learn
some techniques to make you
feel confident, a cure for insomnia, or need a new hobby other
than eating or drinking yourself
to sleep, Muay Thai just might be
for you. Absorb the art!

FIRST PERSON
THE OCEAN RUN EXPERIENCE
By Bert Robbins

I have competed in most of the

Ocean Runs from the second one
on. I was a spectator on the sidelines in the first. I saw hundreds
of runners and said, I can do
that and the rest is history.
Trivia: The first race was sponsored by Sneaker Circus, long
since gone, located on Rockaway Beach Boulevard across
the street from Woolworth, long
since gone and on the boardwalk, recently gone, to a concrete
walk or jog or run depending.
Originally it was an out and back
6-mile race and drew at one point
in the time over 2,000 participants.
This year there were fewer than
100 due to a change of time and
near hurricane weather.
After Sneaker Circus, Chase Bank
was the sponsor for a number of
years with the logo, Chase Me on
the back of the t-shirts. For years

now, Sweet n Low appears as sponsor along with Rockaway Rotary.

In the beginning, Ely Cohen,
the race director, had close contact with the New York Road
Runners and as noted above, attracted large crowds. I and many
others assisted in distributing
race applications far and wide. At
one race the runners were greeted by a banjo band at the finish
and refreshments of course.
In the early days, in my late 40s
and 50s, I was an upper middle of
the pack finisher. In more recent
times though my pace has slowed,
but not as much as the competition and one year there was a
money award I cashed in. This has
also happened with the New York
Road Runners. In past years this
would have prevented me from
participating in the Olympics.
Speaking of the Olympics,
starting at age 60, for a number of
years I participated in out of state

Olympic games and medaled, in

AZ, NJ, RI and CT, one of which
was written up in The Wave; Oct.
7, 1995 as gold medalist in the
1500 meter and silver in the 400
and 800 meter.
In the past I have received medals in the Pepsi Cola NYC Triathlon and the Town of Hempstead
Triathlon in the age 50 category.
At 81-years-old I competed in
Runner of the Year with the NY
Road Runners with five first places and a close 2nd in the six qualifying races in distances ranging
from one mile to 10 miles.
As a past member of the Long
Island Roadrunners I was a consistent winner in their 5K races at
Eisenhower Park with numerous
Long Island Duck trophies.
As a member of the NY Road
Runners I have had a first place
in 5th Avenue and 2nd in the
Staten Island Half Marathon in
age category.

I thank the Ocean Run for giving me the springboard to all of

the above. Speaking of springboards I also was a medal winner
as a member of the NYU diving
team. Their uptown campus was
in the Bronx and is now the site of
Bronx Community College.
Again I thank you Ocean Run.
See you next year. Nature willing.

BATS HEAT UP AT RAIN-SOAKED MIDSEASON

Rain washed out numerous
games last week but the lumber
was flying between raindrops as
the first half of the 2016 season
ended with several high-scoring affairs. In the Major Girls tilt
between the St. Johns Hospital
Tigers and the Stop & Shop Pandas, an incredible 42 runners
crossed the plate.
After struggling to an 0-3-1
start in 2016, the Tigers exploded to their first victory (28-14)
against the hard-hitting Pandas. Maeve Murnan and Abbey
Tubridy led the attack. Fiona
Mullen and Noelle Cook pitched
a great game with support of
great defense from the DOrazio
girls, Samantha Rodino, and
Maura Edwards. Noelle Carey
paced the Pandas attack with a
4-for-4 performance that included two home runs and seven
RBIs. Diane Erhard, Jada Strika
and Jenna Strika also contributed with the bats. Jamie Kinneary
and Lindsey Hanglow had successful pitching debuts. Hagan
Carlin, Kathleen Conti and Kayleigh McMahon made strong defensive plays in the infield.
The Walsh Properties Flippers
also posted 20+ runs to move
past the Knights of Columbus
Hilltoppers into second place
in the Major Girls division. The
Flippers played well in all aspects of the game against a firstrate opponent. Beth Dunn set
the pace with a leadoff triple
and finished 5-for-6. Morgan
Connelly, Katie Hogg and Lauren Lynch also had big days.
It was a great team effort. The
Flippers held the Hilltoppers to
seven hits, three of which including a triple came off the
bat of Kallynn Schanstra. Carianne Sconzo picked up two
RBIs with a double and scored
on Jackie Picciones single
The bats were flying on the
boys side of Ft. Tilden, too. The
AKB Security Rockies scored
seven runs in the fourth inning to break open a tight game
against the Ram Title Insurance
Pirates and cruise to a 17-4 victory. Leading the way were
Nicholas Donohue, Chris Light
and Brendan Daugherty, who
each had two hits in the game

and a combined five 5 RBIs.

Reid Heyman pitched a gem,
striking out nine in four innings
while giving up three runs on
four hits. Michael the Knight
Light closed the game out in
the fifth 5th with two 2 Ks, also
going 2-for-3 at the plate with
two doubles. Nicholas Rodgers
and Joe Mortellaro both played
Gold-Glove caliber games in
the field while making no errors
and saving runners from scoring. Another standout player
was Lucas Vouitsis who used his
cat like speed to beat out two infield hits and scoring two 2 runs.
Last but not least, Nicholas the
ring leader Donohue hit an inside-the-park home run to kick
start the winning route for the
Rockies. The AKB squad is a
half-game behind the division
leading DriveSafe Mariners in
Major Boys.
Not every game was a slugfest last week. The Jamesons
Reds beat the Contes Carpets
Dodgers 7-5 on another comeback win by the never-saydie Reds. The Dodgers took a
3-1 lead in the first inning after Brendan and Colin Byrne
got on base and stole bases.

Pat Kelly hit a two-run triple

that knocked in James Tuohey and Colin Byrne. The Reds
came right back in the third inning, batting around, bringing
ten Reds to the plate. Corey
Schwach led off and walked and
stole second to begin a four run
inning where Thomas Burke,
Max Levy, Jason Melero, Harry
Charles, Cory Davis, John Piccione and James Mangan all got
on base. The Reds scored two
more in the third on a two run
single by Davis that allowed Melero and Charles to score. Nasir
Khan played stellar second base
for the Reds, and had two assists on hard hit ground balls.
With the game close at 7-5 going
into the fifth inning, both teams
brought in closers. The Reds
Cory Davis was almost lights
out, striking out six of the nine
batters he faced.
At the halfway mark of the regular season, Cory Davis leads
the team with a .636 batting average (7 for 11) with two doubles, 1 home run and 12 RBIs.
Harry Charles is close behind
with .461 average (6 for 13) with
2 doubles and 4 RBI. Jason Melero is hitting .400 with a dou-

ble, a triple, three stolen bases

and three RBI. James Mangan,
Patrick Ayrovainen and Cory
Davis have pitched well so far.
Jack Schmitt (home run) and
Charlie Braun (2 singles) have
also made important contributions in the few games theyve
played. The Reds are 2-4 but
have played tough teams early
and are looking forward to the
second half of the season. The
Reds boast the only 3-generation, 5-person coaching staff,
with grandpa Howie Schwach,
son Robby, and grandson Ryan
all coaching grandson Coreys
team, with Cory Davis and Pedro Martinez.
In earlier action, the first
place Graybeards Bonnies
downed the second place Walsh
Properties Flippers 17-8 in Major Girls action. Alex Cook (33, three RBIs, four runs), Tori
Mullen (4-4, four RBIs, three
runs) and Caisey Heyman (3-4,
two RBIs) starred at the plate for
the Bonnies. The Graybeards
girls posted multiple web gems.
A great relay from outfielder
Caitlin Mullen to Kiera Price to
Bridget Donnolly to got a runner at home. There were strong
plays in the outfield by Johanna Shilling, Emma Murray and
AJ Crowley. Pitchers Caisey
Heyman and Tori Mullen combined to throw four scoreless
innings to end the game. The
game ball went to Alex Cook for
timely hitting and outstanding
work behind the plate. For the
Walsh Properties girls, Lauren
Lynch went 2-2 with two runs
scored. Beth Dunn was on base
all three times up and scored
twice. Morgan Connolly went
3-for-3 with three RBIs. Pitchers
Connolly and Margaret Murray
continue to prove why they are
considered two of the best in the
league.
