Overview

DC Power Supply

Utility AC can be converted to DC by means of a power supply consisting of a

transformer, a rectifier (which prevents the flow of current from reversing), and a filter
(which eliminates current pulsations in the output of the rectifier). A power supply is an
electronic device that supplies electric energy to an electrical load. The primary function of
a power supply is to convert one form of electrical energy to another and, as a result, power
supplies are sometimes referred to as electric power converters. Some power supplies are
discrete, stand-alone devices, whereas others are built into larger devices along with their
loads.

Project Background

Full-wave rectifier is the most commonly used type in dc power supplies. I apply
bridge network because it performs a full-wave rectification and it used four diodes, it
is also safe in rectifying. This project was created to convert AC into DC. This power
supply used a transformer with 220 volts with an output of 18 volts with a load
current of 1 ampere. To provide a desired voltage outputs like +5 volts, +9 volts and
+12 volts. I used ICs like LM7805, LM7809 and LM7812. The circuit also contains
capacitors the first value is 3300 micro Farad 25 volts, next two capacitors are 100
micro Farad 16 volts and the last is a ceramic capacitor. The flow of this circuit is
started in the input voltage in the transformer, after that the 18 volts output voltage
from transformer will flow through a bridge network rectifier, after that it will flow
through a filter capacitor and the next is it will go to the regulator to provide an output
voltage with DC.

Discussion and Solutions

To find Vp(out):
Vp(out)=NVp(in)/2
To find Vp(in):
Vrms(in)/.707
To find N:
2Vp(out)/Vp(in)

Solving for +5 volts:

Vp(in):
Vp(in): Vrms(in)/0.707=220/0.707=311.17V
N:
N=2Vp(out)/Vp(in)=2(5V)/311.17=0.032
Vp(out):
Vp(out)=NVp(in)/2=(0.032)(311.17)/2=4.9V
Solving for +9 volts:
Vp(in):
Vp(in): Vrms(in)/0.707=220/0.707=311.17V
N:
N=2Vp(out)/Vp(in)=2(9V)/311.17=0.058
Vp(out):
Vp(out)=NVp(in)/2=(0.058)(311.17)/2=9.02V

Solving for +12 volts:

Vp(in):
Vp(in): Vrms(in)/0.707=220/0.707=311.17V
N:
N=2Vp(out)/Vp(in)=2(12V)/311.17=0.077
Vp(out):
Vp(out)=NVp(in)/2=(0.077)(311.17)/2=11.98V
