ELEC102 PART I: PROBLEM SHEET 1

Handout 1
1. (i)

Write down an expression showing how the ratio of the amplitudes of two
signals can be expressed in decibels.

(ii)

A linear system consists of two stages in series with one another. The first
stage is an amplifier with a gain of +60 dB from dc to 1 MHz. The second
stage is a low pass filter with a flat frequency response up to 100 Hz followed
by a constant roll-off above that of -20 dB/decade. If the input signal to the
system is v(t) = [0.8sin(2.50t) + 1.2sin(210000t)] mV, deduce the
amplitudes of the 50 Hz and 10000 Hz components in the output signal.

(Note per decade means every time the frequency increases by a factor of ten.
Decades are what you usually plot on a log scale)

7. The voltage and current supplied to a load impedance are v = V0sint and
i = I0sin(t+). Write down an expression for the instantaneous power p and show
that it can be re-written as:

V0 I 0
cos cos(2t )
2

By considering how this expression behaves over time, show that the average power
P can be written in terms of the rms values of voltage and current as:

P Vrms I rms cos

If the load is just a resistor R, show that the average power is Vrms2/R or Irms2R.

8. A series-connected load draws a current i(t) = 4cos(100t+10) A when the applied

voltage is v(t) = 120cos(100t-15) V. Calculate the power factor and the power
dissipated in the load.

9. A power supply is connected at XX to a load network of resistors and a capacitor

which have the following impedances at the supply frequency:

Determine the power factor and hence calculate the total power dissipated in the
load.

10. The voltage measured across a 50 resistor is shown below. The maximum
voltage is 5 V and the time period is 20 ms.

(i)

What is the mean value of the voltage?

(ii)

Sketch graphs of the current i and the instantaneous power p as a function of

time giving relevant numerical values on each axis.

(iii)

Derive an expression for the rms voltage.

(iv)

Calculate how much heat is dissipated per second in the resistor.
