I wrote this book with a passionate belief in a natural, holistic lifestyle, balancing the

years. Below is a snap shot of very simple, yet powerful techniques you can use that
will enormously assist you on your quest to reduce painful symptoms of disease, and
dramatically increase your energy and peace of mind if practiced consistently.
By following the Energy Medicine exercises below, (in addition to the other
alternative and nutritional healing approaches discussed in the book), you will be well
on your way to super-charging your bodys natural ability to heal and reclaiming a
healthy, vibrant quality of life.

Energy medicine is an alternative/complimentary health practice based on the
principle that the bodys energy is a vital, living moving force. It is a relatively new
Western field of study with ancient Eastern roots.

Healing with energy medicine is achieved through activating your bodys own natural
healing energies and restoring and realigning energies that have become out of
balance. Energy medicine can be self-applied or administered by a practitioner. It is
used to treat physical illness, mental and emotional issues, and the spirit for joyous
living and peak performance.
Benefits of learning to utilize energy medicine on oneself allows you to move your
bodys energies through your intention; From infusing energy into every cell in your
body and boosting your energy, to working with visualization and intention to increase
vitality and facilitate healing, the practice of energy healing is profound in both its
simplicity and implications.
Thanks to the science of quantum physics, energy medicine is a scientifically verified
and proven field of study. It confirms what ancient civilizations have known and
taught for thousands of years. It also reminds us that the body, mind and spirit are
connected by one energy force highlighting the influence we have over our own

According to Dr. Oz, a well-known, accomplished and respected cardiothoracic


surgeon and regular guest on Oprah: Alternative medicines deal with the body's
energy, something that traditional Western medicine generally does not recognize.
We're beginning now to understand things that we know in our hearts are true but we
could never measure. As we get better at understanding how little we know about the
body, we begin to realize that the next big frontier in medicine is energy medicine.
It's not the mechanistic part of the joints moving. It's not the chemistry of our body.
It's understanding for the first time how energy influences how we feel".
Dr. Deepak Chopra is also highly recognized for bringing holistic health to the Western
world with Ayurveda. Ayurveda, which means the science of life, has been practiced
for thousands of years in India. Like Chinese and Tibetan medicine it is based on the
idea that everything is composed of 5 basic elements. They include space, air, fire,
water and earth and combine to form 3 forms of metabolic energy bodies, or
doshas. Treatments for healing are individualized and based on doshas. The
importance of diet, exercise (notably yoga), meditation, herbs, massage, sun
exposure and breathing exercises (known as pranayama) are considered essential
basics for wellness.
As you may have read in My Story Healing Lupus, I credit deep breathing exercises
for being the single largest factor for my success experiencing a complete recovery
from Lupus. This powerful, practical and life saving technique gave me just enough
energy (physically, emotionally and spiritually) to fight.

The above modalities help restore the bodys energy through tapping, massage,
twisting and pinching, and are non invasive. Hand motions over the body and specific
postures and movements also help promote energy flow to restore balance. Intention
and mental imagery are also important to help mobilize the bodys own resources for
healing, vitality and wellness. Practicing self-healing with energy medicine is safe and
complimentary to medical care.

The key difference between Eastern and Western health practices is the philosophy
behind the approach to diagnosis and treatment. In Western Medicine the doctor
diagnoses and treats an illness. It is focused on a symptomatic approach with the aid
of treatment though pharmaceuticals.
The Western approach also tends to classify the problem by the predominate issue
based on the symptoms (Ex. an ulcer). This of course, doesnt address the root
problem, nor consider the patient as playing an important and significant role in the
healing process. Often, ones health issue is looked at in isolation of emotional,
mental or spiritual influences.

In energy medicine the practitioner will assess the energy systems of a body and help
realign and correct the energy disturbance. Symptoms are an indication of physical
disturbances but not the focal point for treatment. For example, a stomachache may
result from an issue within the heart meridian, liver or stomach, and the issue is
found and addressed at the root of the problem.
Realigning the bodys energy is supported by patient participation. The role of the
practitioner is largely a consultant who advises and supports enhancing the natural
functions of the patient versus treat the them directly. The bodys energy is seen as
one force, which involves the emotional/mental, physical and spiritual systems.

Healing and The Power of Intention


With the popularity of the movie The Secret in addition to What the Bleep Do We
Know weve come to realize the power of the mind and its effect on healing. A
recent book that discusses this in great detail, with an abundance of scientific
evidence is The Intention Experiment. I highly recommend it if youd like to learn
the why and science behind this fascinating field.
Healing is an innate ablility all of us possess. The body is designed for homeostasis
by nature. We support this process of wellness, of course, by maintaining the true
essense of the body through a cleanly emotional/mental, physical/environmental
and spiritual lifestyle. The key to harnessing healing is through our intention. As
everything in our body is a field of energy, so too are our thoughts and how they are
magnetized.
This also explains the power of faith, religion and/or spirituality. Through the power
of prayer we ask or intend our desire. In as much as we can hold our faith as
seeing this event (healing) as done so it is. With doubt we dilute our efforts
(intention), so it is essential to ask, and know that thy will be done. This is also
important to remember when we practice self healing strategies, that we will be
discussing below. (I recommend referring to a source for inspiration that is in

alignment with your beliefs, such as the Bible, or for a non religious work I
recommend Love and Law or The Science of Mind, by Ernest Holmes). Utlimately
there is no higher source of healing than through God, or True Source.
Knowing, believing or even just being open to the idea that you are a part of
something omnipotent, omnipresent and omniscient is a very therapeutic and an
important element in harnessing your intention for spiritual healing.
Intention (and faith) is the source and explanation for many miracles, often
disregarded as spontaneous remission where divine intervention would be far more
accurate and respectful and reverent of the True Source. God, therefore miracles,
are infact our birthright. Man need not see it, nor prove it, for it to be True.
It is very helpful to remember this when working with self healing approaches. Not
only will you feel more confident and inspiried in your self-healing efforts, you will
maximize the potencey of your results and enjoy a sense of peace and comfort.
Below are 2 powerful Energy Medicine approaches to healing. The first involves a
powerful, yet simple breathing exercise to boost your bodys oxygen levels, which
directly and dramatically influences your energy levels. Use this approach anytime,
anywhere to help give your self a boost (of course with eyes open as necessary).
The second approach involves setting your healing intentions and then supercharging
it with creative visualizations. I suggest you do each of these exercises at least once
in the morning and once in the evening for best results.

The Science and Benefits of Deep


Breathing
The Eastern study of Pranayama is the foundational element for the practice of yoga
and meditation and for opening up the inner life force. Proper breathing from a Yogic
point of view is to help bring more oxygen to the blood and brain. By controlling
prana, or the vital life energy one can keep the body in vibrant health. Prana stands
for life force and Yama means discipline or control. Ayama is the extension or
expansion with no restraint. Together, by controlling breath one can unite mind,
body and spirit.
It is common that with stress and poor posture fast, shallow habitual breathing
utilizes only a fraction of the lungs.
A resulting lack of oxygen can cause several issues including:
Heart disease
Sleep disorders
Depression and anxiety
Stomach upset
Muscle cramps
Dizziness
Chest pain
Heart palpitations
Vision and hearing loss
Fatigue

Modern science agrees; For a long time, lack of oxygen has been considered a major
cause of cancer. Even way back as 1947, a study done in Germany showed that when
oxygen was withdrawn, normal body cells could turn into cancer cells. Similar
research has been done with heart disease.
Every cell in our body requires oxygen and our vitality is a byproduct of the health of
each of our cells.
The benefits of deep breathing are abundant, some of which include:
Reduce toxins and waste within the body
Prevent disease
Improve digestion and mobilize metabolism
Relieves stress and relaxes the body
Increased clarity and memory
Enhances spiritual awareness/experience
Improve functioning of essential organs, brain, nerves and glands

How to Instantly Boost Your Energy


The following breathing exercise can be done alone or in conjunction with the healing
visualization. I highly recommend you begin with the breathing exercise to ground
and boost your energy and then follow it with the visualization exercises below.
If you decide to do the healing visualization as well, I suggest you sit in a comfortable
position (on a chair), with your feet touching the ground (and free of the need to go
to the bathroom).

If you want to increase your energy quickly and dont have a lot of time, I recommend
standing outside, somewhere quiet in nature. If you like (and its not winter!) take off
your shoes to help you connect.

Calm Your Thoughts


It is a good idea to calm your mind and relax before and as you begin. Give yourself a
minute to cover any unfinished or nagging thoughts. Take a deep breath in and allow
your thoughts to slow down. Let your thoughts come and go without resistance. Dont
try and force them away, just stay aware of slowing down your mind and noticing
what is going on in your body and thoughts as a silent observer.
When you feel that you are ready to settle into a deeper level, empty your mind of
thoughts and images. If you prefer, focus on a single focal point or symbol if you feel
that may help centre yourself. Paying extra attention to your breathing now will also
help keep your focus.

Breathing Technique Basics


When doing deep breathing exercises, Yogis believe it is best to inhale through your
nose. This method helps to maximize the flow of oxygen, filters the air and is superior
in absorbing Prana. For our purposes I suggest you exhale whatever way is
comfortable. (For more information on the specific art of Pranayama please refer to
the resources below).
Deep breathing energy boosting work incorporates a technique that involves
complete breath utilizing the lower, middle and upper levels of the torso. Normally,
throughout the day youll do low breathing (which is fine).
Upper (High) Breathing takes place primarily in the upper part of the lungs and
chest. This is typically happens when someone has asthma, is wearing constricting
clothing at the belt line, has a full stomach or experiences other reasons for being
short of breath. The problem with high breathing is that a large part of the oxygen

doesnt reach the alveoli in the lungs, and therefore reduces the oxygen exchange
process. In addition, the upper portions of the lungs have less air capacity, making
this technique the least optimal of the three.
Middle Breathing occurs in the middle parts of torso and lungs. It too remains a
shallow type of breathing as the ribs and chest are expanded sideways. It is similar to
low and high breathing in that some of the chest and diaphragm may be partially
involved. It is somewhat better than high breathing yet not optimal.
Lower Breathing takes place in the lower portion of the chest and lungs with the
abdomen primarily involved, moving in and out when one breathes. Low breathing is
better than both mid and upper breathing, and ideal when combined with both the
above for our complete deep breathing exercise.
Complete breathing uses all three locations of the torso utilizing the entire
respiratory system. When done properly ones shoulders, collarbone, and ribs will rise;
the abdomen will extended as the diaphragm is lowered; and the lungs will naturally
expand to full capacity. This is what were looking for when doing our deep breathing
to maximize oxygen exchange process and support all the benefits that go with it.

Getting Ready to Begin Your Breathing Exercise


Do your breathing exercise in a quiet location, and be sure to be comfortable with the
room temperature.
Have a window opened if possible, to maximize fresh air.
You can either sit on a chair, be cross-legged or stand (I personally recommend sitting
on a chair so that your feet touch the ground if doing it for several minutes, or stand
outside with no shoes on the grass to really feel a boost, yet more appropriate for
shorter durations).
Whatever posture you choose, ensure that your spine is straight.

Be comfortable, relaxed and free of reason to feel the need to move.


Have an empty stomach (about 3 hours after large meal, or 1 hour after snack).
Try and do your exercise once in the morning before breakfast and once in the
evening.

Proper Breathing Technique


1. As you inhale, close your eyes and relax, clear your mind, breathe in slowly filling
the lower portions of your stomach first as it expands out.
2. Continue your in-breath and allow your mid section to expand next as it pushes the
ribs sideways. (Youll notice the stomach naturally go slightly back in which is fine).
3. As your breath fills your body, complete the cycle by allowing the lungs to fill to
max, expanding the chest and bringing your collarbone slightly higher.
4. Just as you think youre at max lung capacity take in another small breath to take
advantage of the last little bit.
5. Then, using the same momentum slowly exhale, this time working in reverse,
allowing the chest to release the air first, followed by the mid section and then the
lower abdomen.
6. Once you feel like youve exhaled naturally, gently push the last remaining
fragments of air out gently until there is nothing left to expel.
7. You will naturally feel a suction like tendency in taking the next breath that will
allow you to even deepen your following breath. Continue with the inhale breath as
described above and repeat.
Pay close attention to how you feel and do the exercise very gently. If pushed to
hard, it can lead to feelings of dizziness. Your breathing should be a smooth,
continuous and gently cycle. If you need, just do the exercise for a few minutes as

you learn to handle the extra supply of oxygen. On your next session you can do a
little more, as you feel comfortable.

Maximize Your Oxygen and Prana


After doing the exercise above for a few minutes and feel comfortable with the
technique, ask that energy fills your entire body and imagine energy from the
centre of the earth moving up through the soles of your feet all the way to the top
of your head (why I prefer sitting in a chair or even standing to support the
visualization process).
As you inhale count slowly to four, remember to allow your stomach and diaphragm
area to expand first and then your mid section and chest. When you reach the count
of four, hold your breath for another four slow equal counts.
After the fourth count, slowly exhale for another four counts, imagining any impure
energy within your body moving down your body and leaving through the centre of
the soles of your feet, into the earth where it dissipates.
Do the exercise for about ten minutes if possible and keep your intention on releasing
thoughts as they arise, as if taken away by a gentle breeze.
If you are moving on to the healing visualization, do this exercise for about three to
five minutes before you move on. If you are focusing on increasing energy only,
continue for as long as you feel is necessary (no more than ten to fifteen minutes is
needed).
Also remember to do this exercise at least two times a day in addition to shorter
sessions as needed, even while lying in bed, driving or in the shower to help facilitate
a boost.
As you do the breathing exercise, it is a good idea to start to align your mind with
your intentions of healing. Release doubt, fear, stress, guilt, and mental chatter as
much as possible. Allow yourself to simply be. There is no need to comment to

yourself, except to align your mind with the intention to breathe in and ask for energy
from the earth, to fill your body, release toxins, and settle in to your intention of
healing.
Once you feel as though you are grounded and connected, spend another minute or
two accessing the deep, sacred place in your heart where your most cherished dreams
and desires are kept. When you feel you have reached that place, declare in your
thoughts that it is your intention to bring yourself to a state of healing of lupus or
whatever conditions you would like to have healed. In the expansiveness of that
energy, as you do your deep breathing, concentrate on accessing the feelings of love,
acceptance and peace in your hearts core.
If you begin to feel uncomfortable, unworthy, embarrassed or if any other thoughts
keeps you from this feeling, just continue to release your thoughts without self talk.
Do your best to continue this exercise. If it is difficult at first, it will get easier with
time and practice. It is absolutely fine and recommended that you adjust the exercise
as it feels natural to you. There is no right or wrong way to do it.
Stay in this intention of healing as you progress through the breathing. I like to
envision the Source or God permeating everything, just as if there was a wind it
would move through all there was in its path.
When you feel that you have reached as deep a point as possible, move on to the
following healing visualizations or complete your deep breathing exercise with a sense
of gratitude and faith, knowing that you are filling your body with healing life force
and maximized energy.
Take a few minutes to adjust to how you feel with your oxygen levels increased and
be sure to move slowly to avoid dizziness as you get up to move.

Healing Visualizations to Realign Your


Immune System
A healing visualization can be summarized as a concentrated intention that directs
the immune system to the problem. Through concentrated focus, our mind sends a
signal to the body that triggers a response that leads to bio-physiological changes.
These changes can be directed toward actualizing a healing of the systems and/or
organs through the power of intention.
Normally, our body sends out signals that are beyond our conscious intention or
awareness. Here we consciously induce the body to send out desired healing signals
through a selection of different visualization techniques.
We are going to cover several techniques for different healing strategies. You can use
the techniques on yourself, or on another through intending a healing for them. The
healing recipient may be local, or thousands of miles away (referred to as distance
healing). The reason a person does not need to be in your local vicinity is because
healing exists outside of the domain of time and space where there is no here or
there. The science of quantum physics explains the event of self or distance healing
through the simultaneous actualization of intention.
I recently learned some of the visualization techniques outlined below at a healing
lecture in Vancouver, B.C. presented by Adam, author of Dreamhealer 1 and 2 (he
only uses the single name Adam for reasons of privacy). Adam realized his
extraordinary healing abilities (similar to those of Edgar Cayce) at a very young age
and his gifts are currently gaining him a lot of public attention.
At the age of only nineteen, Adam has already worked with Chi Gong masters,
astronauts, scientists, doctors, and many brilliant minds on the subject of quantum

physics, hologram theory and healing. His work reveals powerful, enlightening and
fascinating accounts of how you can use creative visualization to heal and how the
science of quantum physics provides the answer to its practical yet mysterious
effectiveness.
Adam has had enormous success healing others, and teaching the techniques he uses
to inspire us to activate our own potential to heal our self. He claims we all have the

I recommend doing visualization techniques twice a day, once in the morning and
once in the evening, for approximately fifteen minutes (following the energy
breathing technique above).
Do not worry about your ability to visualize. Simply work through the visualization
techniques in a way that feels right for you. If you do not feel you visualize well, then
talk (using auditory senses) or feel (using kinaesthetic senses) yourself through the
visualization techniques using those senses.
It is best to be as specific as possible during your visualization. Emotion is energy and
will also help you intend and direct a healing toward yourself (or the person you
wish to support in their healing). Keep your mind as focused, clear and positive as
possible while intending and imagining perfect health during your visualization
exercise.
Perhaps the most important part of the visualization process is to see yourself as
healed, now. This sends new signals to your cells creating a new and different
memory (literally) to work from. Another powerful way to support your visualization
process is to actually work from a tape of your own voice leading you through the
visualization. By doing this it will support your focus, enable you to target specific
thoughts and ideas that can be fleeting in such a heightened state, help you build in
emotions, details, and a process that will allow you to maximize the purpose of the
visualizations.

Creative Imagery
Read through these visualization techniques below and do the ones you feel meet
your specific needs. Some of these exercises are general, and they are meant to
induce wellbeing into the body for any issue. Other techniques are appropriate for
specific symptoms and organs, as I outline. Modify them to suit your requirements.
The white light, fire and waterfall visualizations are recommended for purification
and cleansing as a regular part of your imagery routine. These visualizations are
suggestions and guidelines only. You may want to create your own special imagery
that is uniquely appropriate for you, which I highly encourage you to do! You may find
that the imagery comes to you as you proceed; this is optimal as we let our intuition
and body direct us to what it needs. There is no right or wrong way to do this
exercise.
Also remember be as specific as possible in your guided imagery. If you find yourself
thinking negatively, simply stop the thought (I like to think cancel) and continue to
proceed. Remember to use each technique to realign the health problem, and keep
your intention and focus on seeing yourself in perfect health, as if you were
lupus-free right now with healing the end result.
When you do your visualizations you may feel tingling sensations, twitching or other
physical sensations. This is normal, and a good sign. Pay very close attention to the
sensations you feel in your body as you do your visualizations. Your body will talk to
you as you direct energy towards different areas.
Listen to your intuition and what you instinctively feel your body needs. Its a great
idea to keep a journal to document your experiences, and also make note of specific
imagery techniques you use that you find particularly effective

Dont force your visualizations and allow them to happen on their own as you
proceed. Where as you may have intended to use a waterfall image and it changes
into a rainbow work with what comes from within you.
Add colours, smells, sound, and details; really see, hear, and feel your way through
the imagery. The more you know about the issue and the mechanics the more you can
focus on the specifics and reversing it.
Get each and every cell and imagery technique you use to turn against the problem
and dont stop until you feel that particular intention of the visualization is
complete.
See the imagery working after you open your eyes until your next session.
Remember, that holding your faith in God, a Universal life force that permeates all,
and being a part of it by nature will help you silence doubt if you question the
possibility of self healing.

Imagery Visualizations
White light: A good way to begin your visualization is to fill your body with white
light, which symbolizes the universal life force, love, strength, purity and wholeness.
Use whatever technique you feel comfortable with. Do it until you feel every cell of
your body is illuminated. Any imagery is fine; use whatever feels natural for you.
A few common ways to visualization this include: Breathing the white light up through
the soles of your feet to the top of head; Or breathe it in through your mouth as you
inhale, letting the white light disperse throughout your body; Let a beam of white
light scan your body and fill it as it moves up or down; Or simply have your body
instantaneously become a beacon of white light.
Prepare your body with your intention of healing and imagine the white light
permeating into each and every cell of your body, filling them with nourishment,
strength, structural integrity and alignment to the highest force of health and
healing.
See the problem areas of your body, systems and organs dissolving, easily integrating
into a healthy, naturally functioning whole. Really use your senses for this exercise.

Fire Visualization: This technique is a good way to purify the body. Imagine flames
of fire moving through your entire body from your feet upward, dissipating toxins and
purifying your body. If you like, imagine a warm energy that accompanies it, almost
like an internally heated energy bath. Pay extra attention to areas that you feel need
to be released of toxins. Move the flames around to the areas of the body you would
like to focus on. Do this until you have fully engulfed your body with a purifying force
that is releasing waste and purifying your body.
Lightning Bolt: This visualization is good for the nervous system. Imagine lightning
bolts striking any points of your body and electrifying a charge to re-connect and
realign the nervous system to function smoothly, efficiently and effectively. Hear the
electrical currents running through your body and really see the areas of concern
aligning back to a natural, healthy state. This is a wonderful exercise to calm and
align the nervous system, smoothing out the rough edges so that stress washes right
over your nerves, leaving you with a calm, peaceful and strong constitution.
Pac Mans (Adam calls this SEPs Smart Energy Packets): This visualization
technique is appropriate for reaching many cells of the body at once. Imagine
hundreds of mini pac mans or SEPs moving in through your mouth, into the body and
gobbling up old, unhealthy cells filled with toxins, and replenishing your body with
new, healthy cells that are robust and whole.
Make it fun, give different tasks to different SEPs and accommodate many tasks at
once. Focus on how this imagery will help you heal lupus, perhaps by rebuilding a

healthy, cellular foundation that is whole, strong and robust. Also visualize the little
energy packets leaving gifts of nourishment for the cells to enjoy long after you have
completed your visualization, until your next session.
Liquid Energy Drink: This is a wonderful exercise for those with lupus since fatigue is
such a pronounced problem. Imagine drinking a pure, energized liquid; make it clear,
white (or any colour) liquid that your body takes in and assimilates into each and
every cell of your body, forcing out whatever is blocking the cells from nourishment.
Have some fun with this visualization. Choose the colours of the rainbow to go to
different sections of the body, have it glow as white light or any variation you like.
Really feel the energy taken in by your cells. Spend some extra time on this exercise
if you are fatigued. (If you like, add the malleable rod through your cells, as I felt
with my drink from the Medicine Woman). This is also a good exercise to use
throughout the day, while youre driving, resting, working, eating, anytime!
White Light Malleable Rod: This visualization is appropriate for those of you with
joints, back or other structural problems. Imagine a malleable rod of white light
passing gently but firmly through the center of your spine to the tail bone. Imagine
doing all of the activities you used to do with no pain. Really feel the mobility you
have regained.
Do this for any bones in the body that need to be strengthened and realigned. You
may also make your rod very small, and have it move into the core of each and every
cell of your body, creating a solid core foundation that leaves your cells strong,
round, whole, and able to take in energy and nourishment easily.
Injection: Forget the fear; this needle is wonderfully healing and soothing. Imagine a
gentle infusion of lubrication of white light into sore joints and degenerating discs.
See yourself giving your sore joints and discs the smooth, easy motions of mobility
with this soothing fluid that will allow your joints to feel as good as new.

This is a very helpful visualization for those affected by arthritis, common with lupus
patients. Add your favourite scent if you like and really get into the areas that need
the most attention. Have this injection session activate each area of concern at once,
and bath in its relaxing yet healing lotions.
Explosions: Use this imagery for areas that need to be opened or where you feel
blocked. Place tiny or large sticks of white light dynamite into areas of the body that
feel blocked and light the fuse that results in an energy burst that almost tickles when
it blows. This gentle, soothing opening visualization is wonderful for many different
issues, including mental confusion, digestive problems (cramps), re-nourishing and
energizing damaged hair follicles (common for many lupus patients), or anything else
that would reinstate the proper functioning and regeneration of cells, even the
nervous system.
Waterfall: Use this visualization to wash away all the energy that you have just
released by imagining an energy waterfall, in any colours that you choose, then
finishing in white. This will be immensely soothing, comforting and nourishing as the
old, unhealthy cells and toxins are released and washed away from your body forever.
Spend a few minutes on this visualization imagery and concentrate on the results you
are intending. I personally enjoy closing with a sense of gratitude and faith.
