TUTORIAL #11

OVERVIEW OF STEPS TAKEN TO CREATE THE FINAL PART:

OVERVIEW OF STEPS TAKEN TO CREATE THE FINAL PART:

From drawing to CAD model:
The student should examine the drawing on the following page to understand what part is being created in the
tutorial.
From the drawing we can get an idea of how to create the geometry and solid model in Mastercam.

Create the wireframe that will be used to create the solid model:
The student will create "flat" geometry from the Top View.
Geometry with a Z-Depth of 0 will be created and used to "extrude" the solid later on.
Geometry creation commands such as Create Rectangle, Create Circle Center Point, Fillet, and Chamfer will be
used.

Create the solid model:

The student will create a new level to separate the wireframe from the solid model such that the file can be
better organised.
The Extrude command will be used to create the main solid body of the part.
The Extrude command will be used to "cut" the holes through the part and the pocket to a certain depth.
The solid will be filleted using the command of Constant Radius Fillet command.
The solid will be chamfered using the command of One Distance Chamfer.

Additional tutorial information:

The student will learn how to resize an arc using the command of Create Circle Center Point.
Because the chained geometry (Circle) is associative to the solid model, after re-generating the solid, the solid
hole size will change to reflect the new circle size.

This tutorial takes approximately twenty minutes to complete.

SOLID CREATION
A Solid is a geometric entity that occupies a region of space and consists of one or more faces, which define the closed
boundary of the solid.

STEP 8: CHANGE THE SOLIDS COLOR TO RED #12 AND THE VIEW TO ISOMETRIC
From the Status Bar, located at the bottom of the graphics window, select Solids Color as shown.

Select the color Red #12 as shown.

TUTORIAL #11

CHANGE THE MAIN LEVEL TO 2

Select the OK button to exit the Colors dialog box.

Select the Isometric View from the toolbars.

NOTE: The construction plane or the graphics view do not affect the way in which the solid is generated.
Select the Fit icon to fit the geometry in the graphics window.

STEP 9: CHANGE THE MAIN LEVEL TO 2

Levels are a primary organizational tool in Mastercam. A Mastercam file can contain separate levels for wireframe,
surfaces, drafting entities, solids, and toolpaths. By organizing your files into levels, you can easily control which areas of
the drawing are visible at any time and which parts are selectable. By doing so, you will not inadvertently make changes to
areas of the drawing you do not want to change.
In this step we will change the Main Level to 2, to create the solid on Level 2.

Left click in the number area to the right of the Level button as shown.
Change the level number to 2 as shown.
Press the Enter key on your keyboard.

STEP 10: CREATE THE SOLID BODY BY EXTRUDING A CLOSED CHAIN

Solid Extrude: Performs an operation that results in the creation of one or more new solids. Mastercam extrudes entities
by driving the shapes of the entity along a linear path using a specified direction, distance, and other parameters that
further define the results.

Step Preview:

Extrude.
Leave the default settings in the Chaining dialog box and select outside rectangle to create the chain as shown.

Chaining is the process of selecting and linking geometry entites such that
they form the foundation of a toolpath, a surface, or a solid. When you
chain the geometry, you can select one or more sets of curves (lines, arcs,
and splines) that have adjoining endpoints.
Chaining differs from other selection methods because it assigns order and
direction to the selected curves. Chaining order and direction determine
how surfaces, solids, and toolpaths are generated.
[Select chain(s) to extrude 1]: Select the chain as shown.

NOTE: If you did not select the chain correctly, you can use the Unselect button

from the Chaining

dialog box to undo the previous selection.

Select the Fit icon to fit the entire geometry in the graphics window.
The Solid Extrude dialog box will display. An arrow will appear on the geometry. This arrow indicates the
direction of the extrusion.

Make sure that the arrow is pointing downward. If the arrow appears upward, click on the Reverse all button as
shown in the figure to the right to flip the pointing direction.

Press Alt + S to see the solid shaded if needed. Select the Fit icon again if needed.

Solids Training Tutorial

CREATE THE SOLID BODY BY EXTRUDING A CLOSED CHAIN

TUTORIAL #11

Ensure other parameters are set as shown in the figure; in particular, select Create body and specify the
Distance to be 25mm.

Extrusion Operation is used to create a solid body, to cut a solid body, or to add a boss to another solid.
Reverse Direction extrudes the solid in the opposite direction from the arrow on the chained geometry.
Distance enables controling the outcome of extrusion through various ways: by inputting a value for the
extrusion Distance, by extending cuts Through all targeted solids, by extruding in Both directions, or by
Trimming to Faces that are selected.
Both Directions allows you to extrude in both the extrusion direction and the opposite direction.

Select the OK and Create a New Operation button to remain in the same command

Select the Fit icon to fit the geometry.

TUTORIAL #11

STEP 11: CUT THE 4 HOLES THROUGH THE SOLID

In this step we will cut the holes through the entire body of the solid.

Step Preview:

Leave unchanged the default settings in the Chaining dialog box and chain the 4 circles as shown below to
create the chain.

NOTE: In this step, the chaining direction does not matter because the direction of extrusion can be modified
afterwards.
