TheMacintoshPortable,releasedin
1989,wasApple'sfirstbattery
poweredportableMacintoshpersonal
computer.

AfterJobs'departure,theMacintoshproductlineunderwentasteady
changeoffocustohigherpricepoints,thesocalled"highright
policy"namedforthepositiononachartofpricevs.profits.Jobs
hadarguedthecompanyshouldproduceproductsaimedatthe
consumermarketandaimedfora$1000pricefortheMacintosh,
whichtheywereunabletomeet.Newermodelssellingathigher
pricepointsofferedhigherprofitmargin,andappearedtohaveno
effectontotalsalesaspoweruserssnappedupeveryincreasein
power.Althoughsomeworriedaboutpricingthemselvesoutofthe
market,thehighrightpolicywasinfullforcebythemid1980s,
notablyduetoJeanLouisGasse'smantraof"fiftyfiveordie",
referringtothe55%profitmarginsoftheMacintoshII.[48]

Thispolicybegantobackfireinthelastyearsofthedecadeasnew
desktoppublishingprogramsappearedonPCclonesthatoffered
someormuchofthesamefunctionalityoftheMacintoshbutatfar
lowerpricepoints.Thecompanylostitsmonopolyinthismarket,andhadalreadyestrangedmanyofits
originalconsumercustomerbasewhocouldnolongeraffordtheirhighpricedproducts.TheChristmas
seasonof1989wasthefirstinthecompany'shistorythatsawdecliningsales,andledtoa20%dropin
Apple'sstockprice.[49]Gasse'sobjectionswereoverruled,andhewasforcedfromthecompanyin1990.
Laterthatyear,Appleintroducedthreelowercostmodels,theMacintoshClassic,MacintoshLCand
MacintoshIIsi,allofwhichsawsignificantsalesduetopentupdemand.
In1991AppleintroducedthePowerBook,replacingthe"luggable"MacintoshPortablewithadesignthat
setthecurrentshapeforalmostallmodernlaptops.Thesameyear,AppleintroducedSystem7,amajor
upgradetotheoperatingsystemwhichaddedcolortotheinterfaceandintroducednewnetworking
capabilities.ItremainedthearchitecturalbasisforMacOSuntil2001.ThesuccessofthePowerBookand
otherproductsbroughtincreasingrevenue.[46]Forsometime,Applewasdoingincrediblywell,introducing
freshnewproductsandgeneratingincreasingprofitsintheprocess.ThemagazineMacAddictnamedthe

ApplebelievedtheAppleIIserieswastooexpensivetoproduceandtookawaysalesfromthelowend

ThesuccessofApple'slowercostconsumermodels,especiallytheLC,alsoledtocannibalizationoftheir
higherpricedmachines.Toaddressthis,managementintroducedseveralnewbrands,sellinglargely
identicalmachinesatdifferentpricepointsaimedatdifferentmarkets.ThesewerethehighendQuadra,the
midrangeCentrisline,andtheillfatedPerformaseries.Thisledtosignificantmarketconfusion,as

beingafinancialflopatthetimeof

thePalmPilotandApple'sown

In1994,ApplealliedwithIBMandMotorolaintheAIMalliance
withthegoalofcreatinganewcomputingplatform(thePowerPC
ReferencePlatform),whichwoulduseIBMandMotorolahardware
coupledwithApplesoftware.TheAIMalliancehopedthatPReP's
performanceandApple'ssoftwarewouldleavethePCfarbehindand
thuscounterMicrosoft.Thesameyear,AppleintroducedthePower
Macintosh,thefirstofmanyApplecomputerstouseMotorola's
PowerPCprocessor.[57]

In1996,SpindlerwasreplacedbyGilAmelioasCEO.Ameliomade

TheNeXTdealwasfinalizedonFebruary9,1997,[60]bringingJobsbacktoAppleasanadvisor.OnJuly9,

Atthe1997MacworldExpo,JobsannouncedthatApple
wouldjoinMicrosofttoreleasenewversionsofMicrosoft

computerreminiscentoftheMacintosh128K:theiMac.The
