Training of Skippers for fishing boats less than 24 metres

The Ministry of Ocean Economy, Marine Resources, Fisheries, Shipping and Outer Islands is
launching a training course for skippers for fishing boats less than 24 metres (Registered
Length). The course will be of a duration of 22 weeks on a full-time basis and will be conducted
at the Mauritius Maritime Training Academy atPointe aux Sables in collaboration with the
Fisheries Training and Extension Centre.

Applications are invited from candidates who fulfill the following requirements:

Attended secondary school up to at least Form V;


Be 18 years of age but less than 60 years;
Possess a valid Medical Certificate (hearing and eyesight) from a registered Public
Medical Practitioner;
Experience at sea and/or fishing activities is desirable;
Submit evidence of any experience claimed.

The conditions of the training course are as follows:

The course will be free of charge to trainees;


Trainees shall attend all modules, including the practical training.
Only those possessing a valid Medical Certificate (hearing and eyesight) from a
registered Public Medical Practitioner will be enrolled for the training course;
Trainees will undergo continuous assessment for each module.
After the completion of the training course, the candidate shall undergo an oral
examination conducted by a Board of Examiners;
Successful candidates will be issued with a Certificate of Competency as Skipper for
operating fishing boats less than 24 metres in length;
The Certificate of Competency would be valid for a period of five years from the date of
issue.

Mode of application
Candidates who wish to apply for the training course should call in person at the Fisheries
Training and Extension Centre (FiTEC), Royal Road, Pointe aux Sables, Tel. No. 234 6858; 234
7209, between 1000hrs and 1500hrs from Monday 16 to Friday 20 May 2016. They should
bring along originals and a photocopy of each of the following documents:

Educational Certificates;
School Leaving Certificate testifying that the candidate has attended Secondary School
up to Form V;
Birth Certificate;
National Identity Card;
Evidence of any experience claimed.

Note:

Subject to the number of applications received, a selection exercise will be carried out to
choose the appropriate candidates to be enrolled for the course.
On completion of the training course, candidates will have no claim whatsoever to be
employed or priority of consideration for employment.
